By my understanding Jack doesn't need to nominate for the National draft, He can wait till the Pre Season draft, then he nominates his terms.

If we can except his term he's ours.

I vaguely remember we had a ruckman that trained with us, got to know the club and essentially had already had his locker picked out and then another club swooped in in front of us. I can't remember if that was a PSD or rookie draft situation but it definitely shows that once you put yourself in a drafting position you lose control of your destiny.

I think a lot people on here are trying to figure that out, GC intimated to the Blues that they would redraft him if the deal fell through so GC and Martin/his management will be the biggest obsticals. I'm not sure how it works with the draft, I believe he can nominate for either the National or the Pre Season Draft but who knows how it will play out from there.

Am I wrong in assuming the only reason the Suns didnt accept Carlton’s pretty generous offer was that they’re going to redraft him at the Suns? Why not accept 9 and whatever else was involved if you’re not certain you’ll be keeping him at the club? They’re within their right to redraft him and must be confident they can either at least keep him on the list til next year when they can maybe get something from him or try and get him invested in the club?

All in all a very confusing one that will no doubt be fleshed out soon.

Jack Hannath.

Burst into tears at training when given the news Fremantle had drafted him.

Yep that's the guy, bit of a bolt from the blue by Freo to draft him. Could've given him a heads up to say if you're available when we rate you we'll take you.

Was a complete blindside.

We were going to select him in the Rookie Draft, Freo took him in the preseason draft which took place just before it.

Apparently that report was incorrect and it was Martin and 15 for 9 and a future second. Which is fair enough to knock back.

A future 2nd and a 6 pick downgrade? Silvagni was a great player but a rubbish list manager.

If Martin played for GWS then Silvagni would have handed over as many picks as he could to land him.

It really depends on who you listen to regarding this draft. 9 to 15 is every chance of turning into 10 and 18 with bids coming for players. That is a much bigger difference in my eyes.

Let's not get too excited as of yet. Martin has to verbally say he wants to commit to us before he nominates for the pre season draft.

He could also be delisted and be picked up as free.agent by the blues.

He won’t be delisted

Think Freo took him a few years ago, but he never did much.

Martin is an interesting one, because I'm not entirely sure whether he's built for the system we should be playing. He's slight, I'd say a little weak at the contest, but his positive attributes of poise and skill are a much needed commodity in our forward line.

If our FD rate him and decide to go after him, and we can convince him to come, I'll be happy, but I won't be crying into my cereal if we don't get him.

We have the list space, we only have two draft selections for the whole draft (#3 & #8) and several list spots to fill.

Not sure about cap situation but Martin doesn't strike me as top dollar type.

Handy player to have, especially for free.

I find it curious that there has been absolutely no mention of the fact that with Martin unsigned, there seemingly being an impass regarding his future at GC, and that we have PDS picks before the Blues that we would position ourselves to pinch him. Is there just an assumption now that Carlton will find a way to manipulate things to get him there?

It was mentioned very briefly on SEN.  They felt that Martin might put an unrealistic price on himself to discourage us.  Not sure that would work given Carlton can't be any better off than us with their cap.  Maybe the theory is that he goes to them then renegotiates a new deal?

Either way, as far as I'm concerned he's the best possible option for us in the PSD.  Certainly a better option than upgrading a rookie to fill a list spot or re-signing Stretch and JKH.

Carlton were willing to pay him $1.8m over 2 years?! If so that is insane, no wonder he nominated them and noone else bothered talking to him. Wonder if that price stays on his head going to the draft

While the AFL love to change rules every year, I doubt they’ve changed this one.

Martin can nominate a prohibitive salary ask and length so that only Carlton are likely to draft him, and is free to renegotiate to a minimum salary deal after getting to Carlton if he wants.

BUT the original ask is what hits the salary cap, not the actual money paid in the renegotiated deal to make sure clubs don’t use this to manipulate the draft.

Also, again from memory, I’m pretty sure a player can only nominate X dollars over Y years which prevents them setting an ask of say $1.5m in year one and then 100k per year for the next three if their desired club can accomodate something like that. The player can only say $1.8m over four years.

Finally, I think if the player nominated terms (they aren’t required nominate terms, although Martin would) it can’t be just for one year so they can’t do the “$1.5m for one year” and then sign the 100k for the next three in the subsequent contract to simulate the earlier example.

Great bit of information there Lampers, very interesting. In the past I’ve wondered if players could get to their club of choice in the PSD by pricing themselves too high then re-negotiating once they get to their preferred club.
