Bailey's defence is clear in the record of interview.

In his view Schwab and Connolly impliedly if not actually threatened him with the sack if he won more than 5 games.

Bailey's regret is that he didn't complain to the Board and in particular to Andrew Leoncelli.

He admits that while heย  never deliberately threw a game he was at best ambivalent (my words) about winning

Thank youย  Robbo !!!

He's just given us all the energy we needed,ย  to fight like Hell on Friday night.

Yep.

We made massive mistakes in their time at the club, and they are mistakes I hope we never get close to replicating.

Still, at least we aren't drug cheats.

If the AFL had all this evidence and documentation of tanking clearly the one in the gun now should be Gillon McLachlan. Basically found no case to answer. Really? Wait for the spin.

Um this was 10 years ago. Why would you bring it up now. Does it take Mick Warner this long to discover a story? Does he feel good about dragging 2 people's name through mud who aren't here to defend themselves.ย

Its a new board, coach, players and CEO. I have no idea why this is relevant now.ย

Hey Mick here is an idea go and investigate what was in the needles the essenscum players were injected with.ย

Who cares we didn't tank. Collingwood tanked Hawthorn tanked move on.

Dean Bailey: There was no question I wanted to win. I remember Schwaby walking in andputs his head down and I canโ€™t remember exactly what he said but it was something like:โ€œF---ing Jesus, gee.โ€ You know, shaking his head. Oh, I thought we are OK, we won. Hemumbled something about โ€œdifficultโ€, โ€œhardโ€, what weโ€™re doing to get to the end of the year,โ€œgotta think of the clubโ€™s futureโ€ ... words to that effect. Chris said something to me aboutโ€œF---ing Jimmy had just fallen out of his bloody hospital bedโ€ or something. Oh, right. I justignored Chris, to be honest. Then the Monday morning meeting occurred exactly as yousaid. Chris is good with colour texta, he loves writing things on boards. He wrote up Scullyand I think he wrote (Tom) Scully and (Jack) Trengoveโ€™s names up on the board.

Don't ignore it .... that's what Essendon have done.

Face the truth ...learn from it and be a stronger organisation

Agree 'Diamond'...

...but get really angry that other clubs are not held to the same standard.

2 clubs coaches have come out and basically admitted tanking yet nothing has been done about it and we are forever going to carry the can as the only club that tanked.

I guess like everything else we did at the time weย were bad at it. I mean look at who was running the place and his offsider, jobs for the boys. Should never have been allowed back into the club.

It was a disastrous period and nearly sank us, we've still recovering.

If we pick the clever clubs then Collingwood, Hawthorn and West Coast covered up well. They set the standard...

Carlton had influencers (the guy who leaves the room) at the top to help them cover up and the Tiges, who knows why Wallace (and club) was never investigated over comments he has made.

Documentation / records?

What is that again?

Apparently they donโ€™t keep them at Essendon.ย

Whether or not I agree that we did anything 'wrong' we have been made to face a truth no other club has had to. Every year the AFL allows clubs to sit players and play youth, with the incentive of a higher spot in the draft.

We have learnt from it and we are a stronger organisation.ย

But we are alone in that damnation.

The AFL are the ones that need to learn.

Any time this crap came out (we all knew it eventually would) is a bad time for the Club. In Round 3 after a dodgy start to the year is pretty much the best time it couldd come out. Much rather this than in finals break week 2020 after we've finished top of the ladder.ย

Bring it. No one at the club is proud of that time, and almost everyone who made it happen is either dead or dead to footy. Do your worst, media muckrakers.

FFS who cares itโ€™s way in the past.ย

Could have been worse we could have been drug cheats.ย

Good work robbo, quality as usual.ย

Honestly, after 30 minutes trawling through, I'm not seeing a single unexpected word.

Have to wonder if this is the Herald Sun actually trying to influence the result of a game? Don't really think it'll work, it'll just get added to the symbolic 'mean tweets' banner really.

Other possibility is that the plan is to spit this out just before the game and then imply (in the event of a loss to Essendon) that it is a factor in a club spiralling back into crisis. Or, of course, if we win, it is the other sensationalist article, 'club rising above adversity'.

I'm starting to think the sports media are a bit shabby.

ย

ย

ย

At least a dozen clubs have tanked and it has happened about 40 times. And it still goes on.ย  Why should any Demon supporter feel one ounce of guilt about tanking?ย  Seriously?ย  So we tanked,ย  who cares?ย  I don't and never will.

I'd happily see the club tank again if needs be.ย  And I suspect we did tank in a very subtle way in 2014.ย ย Rule of thumb ... If you think a club is tanking,ย  they are probably tanking.

But there again,ย  the draft is severely flawed anyway so you can tank for garbage returns.ย  That's the risk but again,ย  it's a risk worth taking. ย  If we had have better returns through our tanking,ย  the tanking investigation would never have happened.ย  Ask Hawthorn & Collingwood - both teams tanked and then won premierships.ย  So it is risk/reward/kick in the guts. ย

As an example,ย  Carlton have tanked at least 6 or 7 times (including last year) ... and every Carlton supporter I know freely admits that their team tanks regularly.ย  They are not ashamed either - they couldn't give a f/f.

It's as if the footy public & footy media are continually outraged about something that occurs regularly ... they're either oblivious to the obvious or are so attached to footy that they simply don't want to know about it.ย  I suspect the latter explanation is more apt.

ย

Footnote ... tanking has probably occurred in the USA over 200 times in the last 20 or 30 years.ย  Same circumstances - a draft and people are the same all over (i.eย  all humans have the same exact traits - greed,ย  cheating,ย  envy etc etc)ย  And the yanks couldn't care less about tanking - it's an ancient,ย  irrelevant story over there.

Gutter journalism at its finest. Then again what do you expect from the likes of Robbo, Warner, Clark, Ralph and the rest of the HS footy department. Sensationalist at best.

I''ll stick with The Age thanks, there's still an ounce of humility there.

  • GAMEDAY: West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win โ€” something they havenโ€™t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, theyโ€™ll need to exorcise the Demons of last yearโ€™s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?

  • FEATURE: 1925

๏ปฟA hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.ย  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the โ€œFuchsias.โ€ They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturdayโ€™s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach inย Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but Iโ€™ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demonsโ€™ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).ย  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, basedย on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.ย  At the time, the Eagles already had two winsย off the back of a couple of the young manโ€™s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourneโ€™s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle.ย As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nationโ€™s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.ย
