Yes I should've said that, I wouldn't have him going anywhere for a month and if it was then the case it would be either for a Keilty/Preuss with a Tim Smith/Joel Smith. 

Teams are working well with 2 rucks, 1 key forward and 1 slightly undersized mobile forward.

I still think we can use Gawn, Weid, T Mc with Melksham, maybe a Smith and a rotating cast of big mids - Petracca and Fritsch mainly. 

But I can see the appeal of 2 rucks - it helps the midfield and provides a long bomb target, Tommy Mc as the main man and then another mobile guy.

Unless May couldn’t physically play, why weren’t we allowed to use May at Casey today? There’s probably a simple answer, but Gaff was allowed to play AFLX and JLT this year.

I’d still bring Preuss in next week. He can play forward and bring in when Gawn needs a rest.  Preuss also can handle some physical stuff and get angry.  We need a bit of anger.

Melbourne Listed Players (Be warned I wasn't in my normal viewing place so didn't have the best view of the ground and I was focusing on Dec most of the game):

Stretch: Good attack on the ball and did well on the inside
Kolodjashnij: Took a little while to get into the game, but reads the ball well off half back and has great skills. Could see him coming into the Seniors pretty soon. 
Lockhart: An average game by Jay's standards but did his usual good work 
Maynard: Didn't notice him a lot but he was inside all day and its hard to tell with loads of players around the ball who is doing well or not
Bradtke: The surprise for mine. Was very quiet the first half but took some good grabs and kicked a goal in the second
Bedford: Again didn't really notice him but did a couple of nice things out of the back pocket
Preuss: Was a monster in the ruck around stoppages, but did nothing of note around the ground. Talking to him after the game he was running around sore
J. Wagner: Solid game but made mistakes with the ball, his attack and aggression was great though
Petty: Great game as the main key defensive peg with some good overhead grabs and spoils until he rolled his ankle in the last quarter
Baker: I think he is going to be a good winger, runs hard and fast and hits the ball well. Some sloppy disposals though.
Keilty: Best forward on the ground by a mile. Jumped well at the ball, took a few strong marks and if not he always bought it too ground. Did some good work at ground level too. Didn't do much Ruck work as Pruess probably did 80-90%. Was stuffed in the last quarter as he didn't come off the ground for the whole 2nd and 3rd quarters but I really liked his game. I am being biased but he played well.

Did I miss anyone?

Also Jade Rawlings is a great coach. I listened to the 3/4 time huddle and his instructions to the boys were well given and you could see the affect it had in the last quarter to enable us to hang on for the win.

 

 

Thanks for the report. Just wondering if Bradtke  could be developed into a Westhoff-type tall forward as he is slow to muscle-up but get gets amongst a handful of grabs each game.

Redpath was allowed to play in the JLT Community Series and AFLX, but not in a VFL practice match.

I am certain that AFLHQ will be able to spin out some reason that justifies their inconsistency. 

FWIW Mumford played in a NEAFL practice game today, despite being ‘internally suspended’ by GW$

Thought Stretch was good. Liked Declan Keilty’s game, also. Both looked like they could handle a call up if needed. 

The 2 smalls were interesting - Chandler and Bedford. Perhaps a little slow to start, but both showed quite a bit as the game progressed. Kade’s got a competitive, hard-working approach to the game and Toby has pace and intensity. Works in progress, but I like their skills sets. Kade likes to fly at times, and will snag a ripper at some point if he’s allowed the license to fly from time to time. 

It was good to see Oskar Baker getting through the game after the soft tissue issues he’s been having. He was probably even showing a fraction more toe today - his hair stylist has given him a ‘do with less air resistance (and a slightly different colour?). Took me a while to realise who it was in the #56!

KK worked into the game, and agree with Drunken that he looks not far off. Can’t wait to see him in the seniors. Wonder if it’s a question of match fitness and conditioning as to when he plays for MFC. (Although the lack of such didn’t seem to stop several getting games yesterday!?)

Preuss was a mixed bag. Was quite good in the ruck, didn’t offer much around the ground and was not bad using his strength in clearances after ball ups - although I’m not sure how well he’d get away with that in the AFL. Amid calls to get him in to give assistance to Max, I’m not quite sure how well the twin towers strategy would work. 

James Jordon was effective in the backline, and took the kick-ins. A beautiful user of the ball.

If you remember the Richmond JLT game Keilty was good in centre bounces but also beaten by a ruck who grabbed it from a throw in and kicked a goal.

According to the website Keilty is 194/94kg, Weid is 195/97kg. Who knows how accurate those numbers are but I'm not convinced there's much difference.

Keilty might be a bit more effective in the ruck but I'm not expecting miracles up forward from him, he didn't do a heap up forward against the Lions.

Realistically swapping Weid for Keilty would be getting a similar player without the upside. I've got no interest in that. Preuss for a big contested body would at least mix things up. Or adding Keilty alongside Weid, playing Tracc in the midfield and T mc on the wing for part of the game and changing the forward mix. Or waiting until Tim Smith is back soon and getting that 3rd tall versatile and defensive forward in the mix. 

Rewarding form builds a good culture. Keilty has better form. Upside is important if developed correctly and i think we do that now but Keitly for mine he has earned his stripes, He can also take a contested mark.

It sounds like a load of BS to me - Gaff shouldn't have been allowed to play either, particularly the AFLX rubbish, where there was the additional reward of some extra cash (although for Gaff, perhaps that could go towards Andrew Brayshaw's dental bill - from experience, trust me!).

But I'd say the disallowance of May (and probably others) to play in VFL practice matches would be due to the VFL games being played on a concurrent weekend as an AFL home and away game for which the suspension applied.

  I don't know why a) there couldn't have been a VFL practice match last weekend and b) why the byes season start and end for the VFL isn't made to line up with the AFL season - leads to some very sub optimal situations at times.

Weid was not being served well by our midfield yesterday.

Goodwins game plan is contested ball with plenty of random F50 entries. I don't think this game style suits Weid at all. It suited us with Hogan in the team as we had structure, Hogan had the great presence of a full forward.

In my humble Weid needs to watch tapes of Lloyd from Essendon in his prime and Goodwin needs to change our game plan to suit.

I think Weideman could be elite as a leading full forward if we got a game plan together that stopped bombing the ball in randomly and they worked out leading patterns that freed up space for him to lead into.

I can tell you they don't practice it. 

I read that above  that Bedford played half back? Is that true or did he just have a stint there?

I thought we spotted up forward 50 options pretty well yesterday.  A couple of good hit-up to ANB (which he unfortunately missed), was a pretty decent pass from T Mac to Jones in the last (wiped my mind of that outcome).

On a more positive note, I did think that kick to T Mac in the first quarter on the edge of the square was a pearler and Melksham's foot skills passing into our forward 50 are elite.

Does make me also think that we are missing another medium-tall forward option at the moment though like Hannan or J Smith.  Hannan doesn't always rack up huge numbers but often really makes his possessions count and I was impressed with both Smiths (Joel in particular) before they were injured.  Not sure Keilty plays quite the same role, so he might be needing to be seen as either a better option than Weid or better than Preuss in the ruck.

Yeah, he's quick, but can he play?  We can't add speed for the sake of it.  I'm all for giving the kids a go, but they will need to bring more than just speed to the side for me to be convinced.

Baker likes to run and kick. He can spot a player unlike a few of our 1st team seniors.  Though last year I remember Rawlings suggesting he needed to link up more with other runners (except they weren’t as quick). Hope they don’t turn Baker into another handball mad midfielder. It drives the forwards crazy. 

Tim Mohr must have the recuperative powers of the Wolverine if the following report from afl.com.au is true:

Rookie defender Tim Mohr was taken to hospital with a dislocated knee after an incident early in the clash.

While he was released on Sunday afternoon, the former Giant will head for scans on Monday to learn the full extent of any further damage.

I’m almost convinced journos read Demonland to get their info. It’s possible someone was sent down there, but with no coverage of the Casey game at all from either Casey or the MFC on social media the ‘Around the state leagues’ report is identical to what our posters provided.
