Another Americanism.Ā

Thanksgiving next.Ā

There’s A Saturday in SeptemberĀ

unless you play all 3 on the last Saturday, Pies could quickly add to 26 lost GFs.Ā

"Gil. Ā  The marketing guys say that having three grand finals could generate a lot more revenue. Ā  The TV guys love the idea too"

"Mmm. Ā It could mean too that we can get more of the second tier corporate types in who miss out when we only have one GF, because we do have to put up with those bloody bleating members who expect to get to yet another game after watching all season. Ā They really are a nuisance."

"We could change the name too, maybe call them playoffs?"

"What does Eddie think?"

"He would be all for it, but only on the proviso that it is implemented retroactively and they can get another go at WCE. Ā Otherwise he says that it would only work if there was a 'trigger', that being if Colonwood lose the first playoff."

"Well how about we 'progress the idea', but leak out that it is the interstate clubs that are pushing it, not us. Ā Some traditionalists could get angry at us"

I believe there be no more Drawn Grand Finals.Ā

Now extra time - like all other finals.Ā

That was snuck in with very little public discussion.Ā

Don’tĀ see the issue with a replay given it’s a one in 40 year event.Ā

I’m a definite no on the best of 3 grand finals, but my stance on the MCG only grannies has softened. Ā If grounds interstate can be brought up to standard (high capacity, facilities, etc) then it should change in the future.

Absolute cow tish ... what are the qualifying and preliminaries/semiesĀ for if not to lead to the final play-off. This would wreck our traditional, historical and practical finals series. Players at the end of the season whose teams make the GF are not to be expected to endure yet another 'round of finals pressure, both mentally and physically.Ā

This is my big issue. I would be pissed if I couldn't get a ticket to an interstate Grand Final that we were involved in.

Until they can get close to 80,000+ it's a no from me.

From memory, the Perth Stadium has been built in such a way that adding another 20,000 seats in the future won't be too hard and require any major demolition prior to upgrade.

But the current deal with the MCG until 2057 means I'll either be dead or back in nappies by thenĀ anyway.

Let's not forget the angst it causes bulk West Aussies either.... It's still the VFL!!

The MCG grand final deal is nothing but a VFL relic

One Granny only please.

Could only be something thought up by a total dh/fw !!

We already have the exact opposite of thanksgiving - its called Australia day!Ā

Would almost guarantee no more surprise victories, such as the bulldogs of a few years back.

Do not like the idea one little bit. I imagine the corporate types would love itĀ for the extra exposure, andĀ the players union would be falling over themselves demanding a huge leap in player payments.

Ā

Has it actually been suggested?

AFL: "Let's nix the drawn grand final cos it causes too much trouble and it's hard for everyone to back up the big day. Also who cares about tradition!"
Also the AFL: "Hey kids let's have a best of three grand final!!!"

Three grannies but presumably just the one cup.

Three Norm Smith medals?

So are you suggesting it was Gil or Shocking?

Nope, nope, nope.

Teams when entering the league knew full well that AFL Grand Finals are played at the MCG, shouldn't have entered if they don't like it.

Beside it's a bloody Grand Final. No matter where or when, teams should be ready to play, it is for the ultimate prize, so there needs no extra motivation to play.

Should interstate stadiums get to 100,000+ capacity, and the highest team qualified for the GF is from said state, then so be it, but until then, the biggest game needs to be played in the biggest stadium.

Not sure of the source, but this sounds like just another thread in theĀ AFL’s strategy to give theĀ AFL a media presence in what was traditionallyĀ the off season. Don’t get sucked in to their malicious media spin.Ā

When will they get the time to play the best of 3 since most grounds have cricket wicketsĀ with drop in pitches which require time to prepare pitches to play on.

Only less physical sports have "play offs" as the player can recover.Ā  Football codes, like ours, rugby and grid iron you can't back up a GF intensity over the multiple weeks and have a good quality game to watch.Ā  Beside if you know your going to loose the first one, imagine the losing side going in preservation mode and benching their best players for the following week as a spectacle.Ā Ā

Ā

Ā

I do enjoy the ā€˜ Best Of’ in the NHL playoffs as it gives the better teams more of an opportunity to progress but I can’t see it working out too well in the AFL for the reasons someĀ have pointed out above.Ā

You can picture it being so Melbourne though, starved of success for over half a century and in its first year, bang, 2 GF wins.Ā

Ā

So we'd be listening to a song about Those three days in September/October?Ā  Sounds about right to me.Ā  Would we have three public holidays as well?Ā  Would they play the third even if it was a dead rubber?Ā  Would they give medals to every player who played in any of the three games?Ā  What would they do if a side sent their seconds over to Perth for match two to get an advantage in the third game back at home again?Ā

That would signal the end of AFL for me.

Ditto.

Their stupidity just never ceases to amaze.
