Fair enough on the Orwell front, can't argue with that.

It's likely this username is the cleverest thing I'll come up with in my lifetime. It's all downhill from here.

I know how you feel.

Fancy being stuck with the name Hemingway.

Its been downhill for a long time.

An apology if it's been mentioned: according to KB and Doc the EFC is offering a 2-ticket, 1 game membership for $25. That should see their membership hit the 100k.

I could do the maths, (but won't)and  calculate how many of these mships Paul Little could purchase with the $6.5b he reaped from the sale of Toll.

You mean I too can receive spam from a football club?

And all I have to do is pay some money to the EFC?

Where do I sign?!

Lol. "Benefits".

fantastic book

I read it while travelling in India and it allowed me to discuss things with many people I met.

A must read and a very easy read.

I had Essendon in my 8 this year. I've really rated them for the past two years. That is, I've really rated their list.

My concern with Essendon (from a Melbourne point of view) is their leg speed and potential speed of ball movement. If they get it right next year, they'll murder us on the outside.

That is their strength. When it clicks it is hard to beat. They thrashed WC in Perth in round 14. Kept them to one goal in the first half with blistering ball movement. Except for the Norf game in Tassie it was the worst game of the year for WC.

If they work on the skills and stick to the quick ball movement they are a sneaky top 4 chance. I hope not, but I see them as likely top 8.

Gill “The AFL needs a strong Essendrug”

This draw was always coming...

It’s a kind of payback.

The AFL can say what they like but  it’s a way of saying sorry.

Despite the so called professionalism it is still a boys club and I can tell you that Bill Kelty has Gil in his pocket.

Bill is the most powerful and influential person on the Commision and one of the most crazy and passionate Bomber supporters on the planet.

If Gil crossed Bill, his carcass would be hanging in AFL House in no time.

So, they continue to cheat: this time with numbers, not drugs.

No doubt Gillon will gloss this over too.

Kelty would eat the likes of Gill and other Commisioners for breakfast.

He has one of the most powerful intellects and has a persuasive force that is rarely matched.

Opposing forces always come off second best.

Respect Bingers.

Bruce is getting to near the end but he is battling a form of leukaemia.

He also has an unbridled enthusiasm and statistical recall that will never be matched in sports broadcasts.  His research and homework is prodigious.

He has integrity, honesty and sincerity. His enthusiasm is unmatched.

And he is everyone’s friend, never a bad word against anyone.

He’s annoying at times but is a guy that deserves respect and the job that he has done for almost 40 years.

He may be annoying but there will never be another Bruce.

You are a good man Hemingway.

I didn't know that Bruce had leukaemia. Sorry to hear that. Sorry to hear that anyone has such an illness.

He seems a nice enough fellow, however his demented shrill comments ("Viney, Viney, Viney") and fawning over certain players - Poppy, Roughy, Sauce, Cyril ...etc) grate. I cannot listen to his commentary any more, and so I have to turn off the volume for matches he is commentating on. He has become a parody of his former self.

But back to you. There will never be another Hemingway!

Nice response bingers.

I think Bruce deserves enormous respect but he is nearing the end and like most who should but rarely do, he should graciously hang up his earphones and turn off his mike as the final curtain is nigh.

I must admit although i was always annoyed by his commentary on the delicious Cyril, I loved Viney Viney Viney.

We are full of our own bias and prejudice and tastes.

Fascinating...as I grow older, I have become very interested in reading  histories from alternative aspects and understanding the power of written histories. India under the British from the viewpoint of the Indians is an easily accessible example.

A useful piece of trivia.. there are actually three people who could rightly claim to be the "founder" of Singapore.

After Raffle's death his widow wrote a book pushing his story forward as the new Clive etc to enhance her chances of getting a pension from the East India Company and as they say "the rest is history."

Hopefully the dark lessons of history that came from the EFC drug saga are not lost but I suspect like in many other areas we will repeat it.

I remember Epis and Shelton and Clarke and Birt(second fiddle) and how C7 made them every Sunday. They above any other Club wanted MFC to rot in hell, literally...........

I think you are writing his obit a little early 'hemingway'.

The form of Leukaemia Bruce has can hang around a long time with minimal intrusion. It's not like the more devastating forms some get in early life.

My father had it for near on 30 years.

...and it doesn't excuse him calling EFC everyones 2nd team.

They most certainly aren't mine...who in their right mind has a 2nd team anyway?

My poor wording. I meant that he was nearing the end in regard to his broadcasting career and that he should retire gracefully.

Whilst we need to basically set the world on fire.

I agree with all the above and add that no-one in the industry ever has a bad word against Bruce. His real passions are athletics and horse racing, but I suspect he could call any sport and make it interesting. For those complaining about Bruce, just remember how terrible it was having to listen to Basil Zemplis calling swimming at the Olympics. Chalk and cheese.

Why not. Damn them for eternity.

Because the AFL is a competition of many things. One of them involves tradition. Another is that a large group of Australians support Essendon and through no fault of their own have been made to suffer the ignominy of supporting a club that brought the game into disrepute. Those followers deserve something in return for continuing to support the AFL competition.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
