America is about as close as analagous to our states as you get.

Our "states" have executive authority to legislate on matters concerning their own citizens, and have full control over their internal laws, with the exceptions being national "external" issues ie external borders and customs, immigration, military, etc.

The constitution actually ensures the states maintain executive authority,  and limits the powers of three national government. Think about it,  we are a "federation" or "commonwealth" of states. The means that the two levels of government are of equal status.

Any federation has similar situation to us.

The alternatives are a unitary state, such as France, where there is a single supreme source of power, or a confederacy, which is a union of self governing states where the central government is relatively weak or limited compared to the individuals (like the EU).

There is no other country in the world that has closed internal states off from one another like we have.

Sure cities and areas have been quarantined and distance restrictions have been imposed but States.... not to my knowledge.

Hogan came from an isolated hub where the players are tested once or twice a week..... the application of sensible risk based decision making has been overtaken by the mantra of populism.

Must be a lot of "social police" in WA

And you are surprised This whole pandemic reaction has been over the top and fear based run by politicians who got spooked early on and didnt know how to get unspooked.

Is there more to this given he is being taken to court?

"It is also a new offence to fail to comply with any of the emergency management Directions issued by the WA Government in relation to COVID-19, including Directions about self-isolation, community gatherings, community activities and travel.

The maximum penalty if you are deal with by a court is 12 months imprisonment and a fine of $50,000. However, police may instead issue you with an infringement notice to pay $1,000."

On the face of it, it seems a fairly standard matter but given police have chosen not to exercise their discretionary powers and issue a ticket perhaps means that there is a bit more to it than publicly reported?

It could be that Hoges has become "known to police" since his move back to WA, and they've decided to take this chance to make an example of him.

Perhaps D-landers in WA with connections to law enforcement can confirm/correct/explain/rubbish this.

If the Jesse Hogan thread is nearing 12,000 posts and the entire AFLw sub-forum has 3,500 posts, is it time for Jesse to get his own sub-forum?

It is getting difficult to keep up with the latest developments in one massive thread, so perhaps we can separate them by each (perceived) indiscretion.

Perhaps WA police don't want to be seen to be "soft" on a figure in the public eye. It's much easier for them to handball the matter to the Court to decide and let the Magistrate wear any negative PR consequences.

It's not dissimilar to the MRO transferring a matter to the AFL Tribunal to avoid having to make a potentially controversial decision.

It doesn't matter what your view is of the risk, or what your views of Covid more generally are.

The rules are there, follow them.

Speak for yourself.

Id love him back if we gave up peanuts to Freo.

nope. he's totally off the rails, cannot hold a mark, doesn't apply any defensive pressure, yells at teammates, yells at umpires, has a history of alcohol abuse. Don't understand why you wat him back?

And that's it in a nutshell.

He agreed to the AFL hub and State govt quarantine rules. He's a high profile, well paid professional sportsman.

When your dcik stands up, your brain sits down.

Players wouldn't care less if Hogan comes back to the Dees . Maybe they would ask him , how was your holiday.

I would be very surprised to hear they were not delighted to welcome him back.  They shared a lot.  Also, he played some very good football for us.  He may need to behave himself and perhaps that would not be as easy for him as it is for others, but there's a lot of different types of people and Hoges is not somewhere way off the scale...  Carl Ditterich returned.  Hardeman.  Donny Williams.  It happens - and with success in those cases.  Just one more talented player to be properly harnessed for the big dance.  Which the players surely would understand - and recognise what he brings for them all.

Have him back in a heartbeat - would undoubtedly draw the best defender thereby freeing up The Weid & Fritta.

(Beside that, the life-size blow up figure with No.1 on his back has been slowly deflating for the past 2 years...)

Add to that: Neil Crompton, Des Campbell, Peter Thorne, were others who left and came back. And, the great and almighty Brian Roet. And, Der Cracker Baby Keenan.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
