Everyone hates the Hawks. Not one neutral supporter tomorrow night is going to be barracking for the Hawks.

☝️100% truth

They are just so hateable, from their arrogant [censored] supporters to their free-kick staging, mullet wearing, poncey looking Glenferrie road coffee-sipping players, Hawthorn can get stuffed

I hate them for an accumulation of little things that kind of come in from every direction. All the thug moments like Spider Everitt dropping his forearm onto a prone Simon Godfrey's throat, the number of Hawks fans who go for maximum gloating while actually being pretty 'lightweight' fans, the rancid hypocrisy symbolised by their 'family club' poker machine empire and personified by Jeff Kennet (who also personifies the gloating lightweight, come to think of it), and the little irritating matter of them blatantly tanking and never being so much as tut-tutted about it.

I expect to hate them a little less after friday, nothing comforts more than knowing that they are stumbling while we are on the hunt.

That's always been my thoughts on the merger. Thinking of getting a Don Scott tattoo.

Staple a velcro hawk to your arm

I respect them and don't necessarily hate their current team (or the team that won 4 flags recently). I was too young to remember the 80s and the 96 merger is a distant memory for me, although I remember the merger game.

Their fans are a special breed though, cocky as hell and rightfully so. A proud club we should aspire towards.

I would love nothing better than to bury them tomorrow.

Eagles supporters would be (and are going by comments on WA News outlet Facebook pages).

If we merged now it’d be handy to have Tom Mitchell on the bench.

That's the heart of it. They've become what we were in our glory days of the '50's and '60's

I don't hate Hawthorn. I admire and respect them and a lot of my favourite non-Melbourne players over the years have been Hawks

Their supporters though - for the most part - give me the sh!ts. I knew about 3 of them growing up and now the bandwagoners are everywhere. If ever someone tells me they barrack for Hawthorn I always ask who their first team was.

Add to that the fact that Glenferrie Oval used to be Range Rover Central and I'm pretty sure that the overwhelming majority of snow-goers are "Hawthorn barrackers".

I wonder if my mum and her Demon mates were as smug as those pricks back in our heyday.

When I was 7 years old, Jim Stynes came to my school, handballed a footy to me and said we'd win the flag. He was wrong (we got thumped by the Hawks in the GF), but a new Dee was born anyhow. The funny thing is that prior to Jimmy's sales pitch, I was a Hawks supporter. Sometimes I wonder what could have been, had I supported such a successful team..

Saint James. Another soul saved.

GO DEMONS!!!

I hate them because of the 87 Prelim.

Firstly when Dipper ironed out Robbie, and of course Buckanaras winning goal.

After the siren a silly hawks supporter feral woman taunted me by waving her scarf in my face, which I proceeded to grab and wrap around her neck.

That thug Leigh Mathews totally taking out Peter Giles blind-sided on the half forward flank at the G as he was going for the ball. Utter contempt for that "hero of of our game."  (Don't forget his police charge for on-field aggression). Quite a legacy.

Hawthorn tossers at work telling me we played our GF last week.

... Stephen Smith apparently still gets headaches resulting from another assault.

And omera at casey 2nds

I'm going to say a prayer for all you blokes that have been aggrieved, and that there is justice in the world of sport.

I used to enjoy going to the dance afterwards because there was always plenty of skirt and beating their basketball Teams in the finals, when it was a free for all, was my happy moments to square up.....

I think the arrogance and superficial character of many of their supporters is at least 80% of the reason for me.

You are dead right about them being many of them being the finacially well off types.  My recollection of the most obnoxious of them back in the 80s and 90s is that they were arrogant privileged aholes that wanted to project more of a tuff, working class yet sucessful image of them selves by association of baracking for  Hawthorn - it didn't work though, you could tell they were silver spoon in the mouth private school boys alot of them.  They were always such total experts and could spend all day telling you why the Hawkers were such a successful club.

I imagine things only got worse during the 2000s.

The other 20% hatred is probably due to the sucess they had over us.

I rank Essendon supporters only just behind Hawthorn supporters for similar reasons.

Really hope that Melbourne supporters don't turn into such a bunch of arrogant ferrals if we get the sucess that we all crave.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
