There is no way I'd have Hawkins in my side.

Would have Clarkson as coach instead of Buckley.

Oliver has had a better season than Dangerfield and Martin and should be starting on the ground.

MacRae ahead of Oliver is laughable. Same with Gaff.

Dangerfield wouldn't be in my team at all.

Kudos to Robbo though for not squeezing in any of his beloved Essendope players.

It's a shame that Neville can't quite crack into the 22. Laird gets in because of higher possession numbers, but as lock down small defenders go there is none as good as Nev.

How does Jetta not make it!

Agreed. Oliver should be a starting midfielder. He has unarguably had a better season than Dusty or Danger. They’ve been included based on reputation, not output.

Always funny to see Rance permanently listed at full back despite regularly been taken to the cleaners this year. Has there been a more overrated player in the history of the game?

The article is behind a paywall so I can’t view it. Does it have a write up of each player included?

It does a little. Said Gawn was better than Grundy in all the “Ruck” stats whisky Grundy got more possessions etc.

Buckley was best coach due to no one expecting them to do this well and with the massive injury list. TBH he has a point. No way in the world I thought the filth would be where they are even with a full side prior to the season starting.

None of them were nominated in the top 3 of Geelong players for the AFLPA MVP.  Thats pretty funny, I guess their own teammates even hate them.

MELBOURNE

MVP: Max Gawn, Tom McDonald, Clayton Oliver
Most Courageous: Neville Jetta
Best First Year: Bayley Fritsch

They select themselves really.

Great to see Nev get this recognition.  So many times he has been knocked around in a game yet bounces back the next week.

He hasn't done a terrible job. It's a tough ask. But I agree with the above comments - Oliver has had a much better year than Dusty and Danger and should be on the field instead of interchange.

Glad to see he snuck both Gawn and Grundy in there, it would be a crime for one of them to miss out after such dominant seasons.

I'm okay with bucks as coach - i still don't like the bloke but he has done an amazing job against the odds to keep that team winning this year.

Jetta would have to be very unlucky again. Outstanding year.

Started slowly in the first month or so. Has been solid since - hopefully makes the squad but I wouldn’t think he’ll make the 22.

Jetta hasn’t had an AA year. Might make the squad again.

Oliver should start ahead of Macrae.

No Darcy Parish either. Wtf

I’m confident that Oliver and Gawn will make the AA team and equally confident there will be no other Dees in the 22.

Jetta, McDonald and Brayshaw are possibly a chance to make the squad, but even that may be a bit of a stretch.

That's not a bad side at all.  I agree Dangermouse and Rance are in on reputation rather than performance, but Martin is predicted to be leading the brownlow right now, so you could say he's having a decent season.  Oliver on the bench isn't the end of the world, and with Cripps, Mitchell and Martin as extractors in the starting side you can see why he'd be left out.

Not a bad effort. Definitely would have preferred Oliver in the Followers and maybe Danger on bench.

Not bad from robbo. Agree on 21 but No way danger deserves a spot in the 22.

Adam Simpson should be coach

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
