I’m at peace today. If we lose then we don’t actually deserve to be in the 8, simple as that. We should however win this one in a canter.

Nope, sorry.

I apologise to all in advance.

Things I don't want to see:

The Dogs stacking their backline and running it out at will via the flanks. Coll, Port, St K and Haw did that....

Stop that happening and we win.

To be fair I think we held up defensively against Port much better.

But yes, I'm pretty confident the Dogs will play the same way St Kilda and Collingwood did, and Fremantle tried to, stacking the backline and trying to run it out using the width of the G to break down our press.

Last week our press/zone held up wonderfully, albeit against rubbish opposition, but I think at least partly also due to the narrow ground.

Things I'd love to see, in order:

  1. A win
  2. No injuries
  3. Seeing our defensive zone/press hold up on the G
  4. Percentage

Fair gap between 1 and 2, though.

TIO Stadium is only 3m narrower than the G. Interestingly we have done well on grounds as wide as the G this year albeit against weaker opposition.

Always happy to over react. We’re doomed and it’s all Pert’s fault.

Me too. I hate listening on the radio because it seems to take us 10 to 15 possessions to get it into our forward pocket, then they call a turnover, the opposition does one handball to a running player who passes it to the leading forward and they announce that he is lining up 25 m from goal on a slight angle!

describes our recent game plan perfectly ?

Why didnt they bring Tyson in to replace Viney?

Hannan makes no sense.   We needed another mid.

that we are worried about the pace of the dogs backline imo

big blow, and the comments from mahoney make it sound like it could be an extended period of time out:

We will have further clarity on a timeframe early next week, although at this stage, we do expect Jack to return during the latter part of the season

Ugh.

We've had a good run with injury this year so I guess our luck was bound to run out some time!

Still, one player should not make a team. Dees by 29 points.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds.
This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
