if the draft runs very deep then we should be right, loading up on a couple of 2nd rounders

the thing we need most is 50 games into Brayshaw, Salem, Hunt etc etc and watch them become very good players

talking the draft at round 5?  tough season so far hey?

I think its a legitimate discussion point and not talking about it because the season is done or anything like that, just a topic i was interested in getting people on here's thoughts.. nothing sinister in. i  still think we will make the 8.

Curious thread.

Im sure the powers that be thought we'd be looking at a different scenario atm. Possibly they thought we'd have stepped up and be motoring along nicely with a view to the 'window' opening next season. In that light you're no so concerned with 1st round talent. More along lines of swapping out, topping up and maybe filling a gap.

Im sure that was the thinking given how we traded.

I don't think we do get to pinch a 1st rounder this year.

Dangerfield wanted to go to Geelong so that deal was different. It was a genuine trading situation.

I suspect Gaff will have a few offers and I can't really see why he would favour any one club over another except for their premiership potential which doesn't exactly bode well for us at present.

The elephant in the room is the re-signing of Tom Mac. If he goes and the Weid fails to impress .... well that would be interesting... At least we would get a decent draft pick that we could use or trade.

Gaff was/is a Melbourne supporter growing up so there’s something small there. Clearly if we keep up this rate of performance, anyone decent will look elsewhere for success. The Eagles on the other hand are looking likely this year so he’ll probably stay.

Who do we look for in the draft?

I see us delisting 7 players 6 senior and 1 rookie with McKenna getting re rookied.

We need to go for 2 key forwards, 2 small forwards and 3 midfielders\halfbacks with pace

Based on Levers output so far, we should demand one of out first rounders back from Adelaide......................

We certainly need run. A leggy winger type like Paul Seedsman or Isaac Smith. Then yeah a Gaff who is a quality ball user and quick-ish (Faster than all our mids still).

What is everyones obsession with draft picks? We stocked up on them the last 5 years.

Gaff is a free agent and is a gun and exactly what we need, someone who can run and spread from a contest. If we don't go after him we are stupid.

We just need to keep topping up our list through trades and free agency to plug the holes we find, he nucleus of the team is there.

If the rumours re Brayshaw are true and Meth Coke finish top 6 - as looks likely - then we should be requesting their first round pick for Brayshaw; I think they’d laugh at us and offer a third round pick

We have zero commodities worth a first round pick that we’d want to give up - i.e. Gawn, Petracca, Hogan, and Oliver - so it is a very, very difficult task to get back into this year’s first rounder

Unless we offer up NEXT year’s first rounder as part of it as a package

Don’t believe we can under the rules in place. We have to use next years first rounder at the draft, as we haven’t used one since 2015. So no first rounder to use this year, and can’t trade next years.

Unless we trade a Hogan, Oliver, Petracca or Gawn, we aren’t featuring in the first round this year unfortunately.

Id be happy to trade Weid, Brayshaw and Frost. I think we'd get overs. Just because Frost doesnt fit well into our backline doesnt necessarily mean he wouldnt be attractive to some clubs for an early 2nd rounder. With Weid we will get more if it looks like we havent given him enough chances. Late 1st round.  A lot less IMO if he is given enough rope. Brayshaw will be looked at by Freo WC and North. Might get late 1st round.

Simple. Keep playing the way we have been.

You forget that this year's first rounder is going to Adelaide? They'd be laughing in their boots right now. Potentially end up with Pick 4 at season's end for Lever after finishing Top 4.

By trading Hogan to WA. Pure and simple.

Unless Hogan categorically wants to go, or somehow becomes involves in a drug cartel (still probably not), there is less than 0% chance we would trade him.

We’re stuffed then.

As much as the last 2 weeks have need pretty ordinary, i actually thought Tuesday night we competed, we fought for most of the night. I honestly believe its a confidence thing and that can change.

But thinking longer term i really believe we need to find a way to get back into R1 of this years draft, i think its critical actually and we must do whatever it takes, as what is being shown up at the moment is that we still lack a genuine game breaking mid, Oliver is a beauty and Petracca may get there, Viney is obviously a gun, but we need better class.  So how do we do it?

Suggestions welcome...

It's not so much individual, IIt's a team confidence thing due to us lacking enough senior leaders around the 27 Yr bracket.  We have oldies,, and newbie leaders; with little in the prime.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
