bit of a puffpiece and still doesn't explain why he wasn't picked.

We all knew his faults and I doubt that a few training sessions fixed them.He needed matches.

The reality is that goodwin backed his inferior gameplan and lost.

Shades of repetition with his continual inclusion of AVB but that's for another thread.

In short, Weideman had to improve his one-on-one work and positioning – "I was probably still really weak in contests" – and he was double-grabbing at marks too often.

i can't believe that the media pundits have ignored the reason he wasn't picked against meth coke in rd 1 is cos he bunged his ankle in the final minute of the praccy match the fortnight before

was barely able to train into the lead in to rd 1; was never gonna make it up for the journey west

i thought he should've been in earlier, but as long as he continues to compete in the air and at the contest and finally resumes kicking straight the happier i'll be

perhaps making him wait in 2020 will be the making of him as a player

Fair comment and Mindset may have been the wrong word to be honest, i acknowledge that, its my perception of him that he is not an urgent, ultra competitive type, from the outside looking in, he may do so, but id argue that he is more on the laconic side.

I hope we stick with him for the next 4 weeks though, confidence is always one of the best tonics for form.

So how many games are you making that sweeping judgement on

So you really think he worked this out in training ?

It was bad team selection but keep on believing if you must

If you knew his faults, why weren't you there coaching them.out of him

Weid wasn't picked because he wasn't in form and had to work on a couple of things, picked when ready and is showing consistency

The AVB thing is tiresome, what role do you think he is playing, coz obviously Goodwin believes he is doing it

Hannan, Jetta, Hibberd, Hunt etc have all been dropped

We absolutely needed to play two tall forwards, but I reckon Sam earning his spot will be better for him in the long run.

Steven May again getting around the younger guys. Anyone who still doubts our trade for him has rocks in their head.

Weid IS the difference. Without him we struggle up forward with only Tommy. I think one player we can't cover is Weid needs to stay fit.

He is our Mitch Robinson. A guy written off providing massive value to team culture.

I challenge you to find any fair minded and balanced Demon supporter that didnt have their concerns on Weid.. he has taken a long time and i think what i have written is spot on.. confidence is key. Go look for a fight somewhere else.

Weid was weak at contests and sucked under the footy in marking contests

For 90% of the game last night he was asking for the footy and judging his marking run better.
5 marks. Only 6 kicks and two goals but he was a target and forced the Pies to spoil which setup chances for Spargo and Pickett.  Imo he beat Darcy Moore who has been in excellent year for the pies.

You would have been at the head of the list whingeing that "in typical MFC style we're gifting games to players who don't deserve them".  Weid is hitting the contest hard and yes he needed to demonstrate that at training to be selected.

AVB sets the standard for the contest, playing on twice with a fractured face, courageously going for the high ball in the Mihocek incident and the back with the flight into Weid and Moore coming at 100mph.  You'd also be at the head of the whingeing about MFC players not putting their bodies on the line. As @Whispering_Jack posted - we are 5 from 5 with AVB in the side.

I realise you seriously think we are only winning now because Goodwin has finally taken your sage advice ...

I agree with you mate.  We did need to play two tall forwards, but having Weid focus on a few deficiencies before coming in to the side has made all the difference.

One thing that stood out to me last night was his ability to either mark the ball or make a contest.  We weren't doing that nearly enough earlier in the year and it is a key component of the style of football we want to play.  He is either clunking them or smashing the back and making sure we limit their intercept marks.

While I can understand the frustration of some for him not playing sooner, I think the club and player have worked hard together to get him to this point and we're reaping the rewards right now.

Said right from his debut game and from his early VFL games that he reminds so much of Josh Kennedy from West Coast.

Just has a presence up forward now and he's crashing packs more then I've ever seen him in the same way Kennedy does. Interestingly it was around 23 years of age where Kennedy really got going in his AFL career after he was struggling to have any consistency in his game early in his career.

Still needs to work on his timing, but that will come with more development and experience.

Agree. When we kick it in his vicinity I’m confident he’ll either win it or kill it. He’s the only one in the forward line I could say that about. I reckon the boys kicking it at him are too.

There is nothing worse than seeing key defenders pick our kicks off and that hadn’t been happening since Weid has been up and about. Melksham, Kozzie and the other ground players are benefiting from this as well.

And as I remember much the same applies to Hawkins.

Always thought Sam had potential. Only just beginning to reach it. He was slightly built and needed to grow into his body. Some can be done in gym but contesting with May and Lever helps timing and positioning.

Weid can become a Tom Hawkins type using his speed and new found strength through timing. Better delivery and support helps.

It was great that he performed against the Pies, I hope we are calling his name for years as he becomes part of our premiership teams.

We also need to have some replacements to ensure he gets rested when appropriately.

He is much bigger, stronger and more skilful than Robinson - and will be twice the player he is....
