That’s about 8 new players at Casey Demons VFL.  Interested to see how the new look team goes.  Jade Rawlings getting the coaching responsibility is a sign he is still very interested in a senior AFL coaching role.

Casey were scheduled to play Williamstown in a practice match on Saturday.  Good chance to see many of the Melbourne players not featured in the JLT series.  How come there is not a word about this on either the MFC or Casey websites.  Is it still on?

On 1/31/2018 at 6:01 AM, KC from Casey said:

Casey’s pre season practice match programme (STC):

3 March 2018 Casey Demons v Williamstown at Casey Fields, Cranbourne East at 12 noon

10 March 2018 Casey Demons    v Port Melbourne at Casey Fields, Cranbourne East at 12 noon

17 March 2018 Casey Demons    v Box Hill Hawks at Casey Fields, Cranbourne East at 12 noon

30 March 2018 v Frankston at Skybus Stadium, Frankston at 12 noon

As far as we know, the above applies.

Because the games are slotted for midday, KC is not available to report so reports are welcome from anyone who goes out tomorrow or to any of the other practice matches.

Got an email from Casey saying the game is on at 12 tomorrow with team lists available from the canteen. Presumably Melbourne listed players are involved.

Just spoke to the club and they dont know if Melbourne listed player's are participating tomorrow. Does anyone know definitely  one way or the other before heading out there?

With no MFC listed players participating in the practice game tomorrow (as per martin) then Casey Demons will struggle to have sufficient players to field a team.  I was going to head out tomorrow, but if martin is correct then there is not much point.

Well no, Casey still have about 30 on their list.

But he is correct, no Melbourne listed players are playing, and Williamstown aren't fielding their full senior list, playing essentially their reserves side.

Strange.....

Given that the first VFL game is not until after we have played our third AFL game you would think the fringe AFL players would be desperate for a chance to show their wares

It’s all a bit strange to me.

Firstly, the blokes on the MFC list who didn’t play in the JLT game like Declan Keilty, Dion Johnstone etc. aren’t getting real match time into their legs with the season just a few weeks away.

Secondly, why would Casey need to have a VFL list of 30 players if there are no ressies?

Yeah I'm not sure why they aren't playing MFC players in the first practice match.

As for the Casey list, only about 15 are training full time with them, with the rest being topped up from players in local leagues.

Consider this unlikely situation, Melbourne get 20+ players out with injuries/suspension etc in a season. Then imagine Casey have a large injury list themselves. That leaves Casey's list basically unable to play so they still need a large number of players on their list.

Good point although that would be a very extreme scenario. You would think if that happened, the VFL would allow you to field top up players from suburban competitions anyway.

One of the benefits of an extended VFL list might be to enable a club to keep a quiet eye on an up and comer like Bayley Fritsch and Declan were before they broke into the Casey team. There were big wraps on Fritsch when he first came across from Coldstream as a skinny youngster previously thought to be not strong enough to make the Eastern Ranges TAC Cup squad.

IIRC Collingwood did this a few years back after they had a lot of injuries to senior players.

I like the VFL but it seems that it goes out of its way sometimes to increase its irrelevance.

Two things I would suggest:

  • Increase its budget and play a longer season.
  • When the AFL team is playing interstate the VFL team should play a home game (how about scheduling the VFL game as a curtain raiser timing wise to the interstate game )

Williamstown ran out winners on a hot, windy and oppressive afternoon at Casey Fields. Williamstown 14.14 98 defeated Casey Demons 11.7.73 but the result is really meaningless as the Seagulls are a stand alone club (albeit they weren’t at full strength) while the Demons played no AFL  listed players. Still, it was said to be a good hit out.

I assume they'll play in some of the remaining 3 practice games. The AFL has rules (that seem very flexible) about which AFL players can play in VFL games.

The more experienced guys are surely keen to press their chances but I think holding out the kids and therefore shortening their season is a good idea.

Plenty of the developing youngsters have moved on. Frankston Dolphins to benefit from Development league demise. Hillard, Lovett, Ferreira & Zijai all at the Dolphins.

Let us hope that young Lovett becomes a Dee like his dad. He was a player hard to forget, with so much talent and drive for the MFC.

both good pints Dees but you could argue that there is merit in playing either of the two groups.

The kids because it gives them a taste in a non pressure situation and the veterans as you in that it keeps their hopes alive.

Let's hope it's all part of the club's plan to make sure we are still cherry ripe at season's end.

I see that there are 4 practice matches so it will be interesting to see the mix for the next one on 10 March.

Pity our last one is against frankston as I think that by then we will be in serious game mode. (Not to belittle Frankston but I would like to be up against a fully fledged AFL aligned side).

Yes, it would be good to be up against the strongest possible opponent as the start of the season nears but the Dolphins are close rivals and need the football community’s support as they regroup after a year out of competition.

As Redleg said, that horse may have bolted.  He's been at Casey for a few years and has spent most of that in the development league.  I don't think he'll be making it from here.

That’s a strange comment to make.

The Weid has already played some good games at AFL level and has been inconvenienced by injury (ankle problems, I think).

Lovett has played a couple of games at Casey Seniors where he has been unimpressive and languished in the Development League where he failed to stand out. Good luck to him at Frankston but he would be a real long shot to make an AFL list at this stage.

When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
