Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

What would some of you people want Watts to say?  "I have been a slack bastard and so I'm off to a slacker club than the Demons", or "I have been a slack bastard and will mend my ways at the Demons".  I reckon too many people interpret anything he says to reinforce their own opinion about him.  Let's just see what happens.

They really don't know how long soft tissue injuries take.  In Jack's case he had had back spasms, a problem ankle and hamstring tightness in the weeks prior but kept playing.

So these probably complicated his recovery.

So if he had a back-related "hammy problem", that's a very different beast.

I haven't heard the radio, but I see nothing in his comments reported here where he blames anyone else for anything.  Or do you consider him saying he was surprised as a criticism of the FD?    That can be read in all sorts of ways which have nothing to do with him blaming anyone.

I found it hard to understand the public statements thus far but now its clear, it was the last gasp. Goodwin has made his expectations clear, left the door open. Watts has thought about it and wants to stay which means he knows what is expected.

I for one would like to see him realise his potential after all this time (part of which the club can bear some responsibility for) and it wouldn't surprise me if he has spoken to Roos (or some other confidante)  who told him changing clubs is not the answer either way he has to change his desire to be the best.

Frankly I think he is worth more to the club than a 30 pick but only if he is meeting our expectations.

There's definitely a big gap between Goodwin and Jones saying that Jack knows exactly what is expected of him and what Jack is saying.  That doesn't augur well.

If he was meeting OUR expectations, he would be worth the ubiquitous Two x first round picks.

Actions speak louder than words (however they are interpreted).

If he stays - he is willing to improve and listen to the coaches instructions.

If he goes - he wants to go somewhere that values him more than we have valued him.

Because of his contract situation - he can make the decision he wants to make.

It would be very difficult now for him to stay at a club that wants him to leave, but he can make that decision if he wishes. It is not without precedent.

100% I agree.

I've been conflicted on Jack. I have come to appreciate the opinion that there must be more going on than in the public domain, for Goodwin be so enthusiastic that he explore his options. But conversely, I have a problem with us receiving a late second round pick for a loyal and talented player, who is at his prime.

C'mon, George. Read the full transcript here.

No mention of "good times ahead". He's clearly disappointed as he's worked on his game for 9 years at this club wanting success with them and they are kicking him out. Also mentions, his best footy is ahead of him and he's very confident in showcasing that.

Goody and him aren't on the same page at all.

Goody should watch Dimma's OTC interview to see what a coach who cares about his players can achieve. I feel Goody comes from the same school of Don Pyke where soon we'll get players bagging each other out on the ground like the Crows did in the GF.

I honestly hope he leaves, I have big concerns on Goody's ability to take on a challenge and develop players who aren't your normal block heads.

I listened to the Dee Tales podcast on the way to work this morning. I'd already heard Roos' comments re: Watts on SEN last week. But what I found interesting was later on in the podcast when he was talking about Jetta and then also the expectations of the coaches on defense vs offense. Comments were along the lines of defense is easier to coach than offense. Not everyone can kick the ball like Luke Hodge or Jack Watts, but when it comes to applying defensive pressure everyone can run. Doesn't matter if your Oscar McDonald (hosts example, can't remember who Roos said) or Jack Watts.

He also made comments about Viney & Jones deciding to be professional full-time footballers even though they're only expected to be at the club 3.5 days/week under the CBA. While guys like Viney and Jones are willing to come in on days off and do what they have to be the best at their profession others have the mindset of part-timers and are more likely to question "why are we still here" if they're running over on a particular day.

It's a great interview with Roos, goes about 50 minutes and I recommend everyone give it a listen if they have the time.

Hopefully Watts manager and Roos and any other people giving Watts advice through this period are telling him the following...

'If you stay, you have to work your ar$e off to prove yourself to the club, the players and the supporters.'

'If you go, you have to work your ar$e off to prove yourself to the club, the players and the supporters.'

Whether he stays or goes, is walked or pushed, this should not be playing-out in the public domain like this.  Under Roos and PJ we ran a very tight ship in the off season.  The disputes that leaked out at the start of the year and now the possible trading of Watts are issues that should be dealt with in-house and not through individuals communicating with each other through the media.

This comment does speak volumes though

Quote

Quizzed on whether he agrees with Goodwin’s opinion that he is ‘stuck in a rut’, Watts replied: “Not really, personally.

“That’s Goody’s opinion. I guess I found it hard to get that confident sort of form, especially when some key people at the club were thinking that, that’s their views and their attitude.

I interpretted the difference here as Goodwin trying to make a reference to Watts career as a whole, where I think Watts is looking at his form for the last two (up to the injury) and thinking that he had made progress and was in pretty good form.

This is because we are moving on our once great hope. The media are like sharks and smelt blood in the water 2 months ago and kept pushing the story. Watts doesn't want to leave and is probably being forced out to make room for others, but at the same time Goodwin hasn't seem to have closed the door fully on Watts which is why it's kicking up.

It's exceptionally frustrating reading some of the posts on this forum about how Jack will respond to this adversity and come back. Rubbish! He will play a few good games and then go back to his comfort zone.

He has had 9 years to respond already. If he was a cat he would be gone by now.

Equally frustrating is that MFC would have some strong plans of what to do with the free cap space and the draft pick they would get in return now that we are a newly minted destination club.

And I'm sick of hearing all the winging about how he played too early in his career and has scars about being tackled in this 1st game. It's like some supporters think he is the 1st forward in the history of the game to play in his 1st year and get tackled.

Blind hope and optimism doesn't help you win a premiership.

His last two seasons have been more than good enough. Jack responded to his critics a long time ago, fans not letting go the fact he isn't the messiah they hoped for are the only ones saying he hasn't.

Jury is still out on Goody like all 1st year coaches but the interviews you hear with players suggest he has great rapport with them.

When a committed respected player comes out against Goody then I will listen until then Watts can say what he likes we see every week that he has sub standard intensity and by doing so he opens up debate about his future

I'm confused by the idea that so many people believe Watts to be a completely lost cause, yet also believe another club would be willing to trade him in.  If he was actually as bad and fragile as many seem to believe, surely he would be no use to anyone and would be delisted.  There is obviously a decent player there and quite a few clubs are interested in having him.

Not sounding like this will end nicely

Must say if they push him out after he has stated his desire to stay and get on the train, I would be disappointed. I would not be too happy if they throw him out.

This club has arsed off some good servants over the years. No one said get rid of him when he won QB game. For mind, this club just never seems to get it right.

He will go to the swans and bag 40-50 goals as a 3-4th forward and will be sitting here with Hogan and T.Mac as our talls.

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
