I just want to say that Jack did not come back to pre season under done, in fact he came back in the same shape as 2016 which was good, he had a great year. His 3 k time trial was his best ever, you can check it.  All his other figures were good too.  He came back with blue hair which was a mistake and put him I all the papers which [censored] off Goody.  He went to Byron on a Tuesday night, Wednesday was a day off, got back Wednesday night. Missed no rehab. He did extra sessions every week.  It's a furphy.  Jack is not like Viney, Jones or Macca, he doesn't live breath football 24/7, he is a normal person like 80 percent of the team but he loves MFC and will be sad to go but he will.  I don't know how many of you would have thought we would dream of trading Jack after round 13 this year

So are you saying they're trading him because he doesn't live and breathe football (i.e. a cultural misfit), JJT?

Ok so you don't know anything and will continue slinging mud at the club without actually saying what you mean. I hope you realise that some on here may get sucked in to your BS and will pass it on Chinese whispers style which could have a destabilising effect on the club.

Maybe i just wont say it in black and white... somewhat appropriate for a Melb site.

Maybe youre too dim or frankly fn lazy to apply the grey matter

Maybe you take the MFC at face value. More fool you.

There is a Trojan horse. Now run along and pretend youre intelligent.

There is also a part of me which acknowledges he's probably never had to struggle to achieve anything. That's probably the craw which has made Goodwin come unstuck. Goodwin had to fight for everything. A classic case of the street-fighting man's envy of the naturally talented.

Think you might be underselling Goodwin’s natural talent as a player and a sportsman here (state captain in junior cricket at around the time he was drafted). Yes, he was a pre-season draftee and developed into an absolute monster on the training track (particularly under Craig), but geez he was a class player who racked up a truckload of individual accolades.

Don’t think there would be any deep-seated envy here, just frustration in seeing one of his charges not getting the best out of himself on a consistent basis.

"Trojan horse" is a particularly interesting comment. Something that isn't what it appears, and something used to smuggle in "the soldiers".

The superficial aspects of the Watts trade are really a distraction? -  the intent of the trade isn't so much to get Watts out, but to achieve another end? I wonder what that might be?  bring a full stop to the Bailey/Neeld/Schwab era? (But we've still got Jones - and Garland)

Or is Watts not the trojan horse  --- someone else is other than they seem? Goodwin? Mahoney? Someone seeking to get all the attention focused on Watts, while really having another aim?

If there is any truth in beelzebub's "Trojan horse", then it's pretty worrying...

They're trading him because he doesn't fit Goodwin,  he wants tough hard players. If he could have 22 Jack vineys he would be happy .  Do any of think having Todd and Jack there is good?

I think Goodwin wants 22 players with a competitive edge. That is what the game demands. Look at the last 2 Premiers and their manic pressure. See how Cotchin changed his game and went from good to great. Jack needs to change his game. He has natural talent but at 26, when he should be in the prime of his career, the market for his services is pretty shallow. Why is that?

And no. Having Todd and Jack there does not seem to be a problem. Has not been raised as a problem. You seem to think its a problem.

Yes I do.

They have the same yearnings as me.  Maybe they're uncompromising and want to win the club's first flag in over 50 years.

Have a look at Gonzo's superb attachment earlier in this thread.

Does anyone think a team made up of 22 Jack Viney clones could win?  Goodwin obviously values the hard working hard nut, but he seems to be completely oblivious to the need for skill and finesse.

But thats just it. Skill and finesse is a natural talent. Without hard work that is all it is. What your saying is that Jack has skill and finesse so its ok to expect less from him in terms of hard work and dedication? What kind of example is that to our younger players?

Not a bad team at all,  it makes me wonder  what kind of money their top half dozen are on when they can fit Rockliff and Motlop in there.

Reportage suggests they were one club that did not have automatic pro rata contract uplifts kicking in when the salary caps going forward were finalised.

No. He will walk away from football because he won’t do the hard work.

I will be amazed if he survives a season at Alberton

NO, I'm saying that you need both to win.  What Goodwin is building is a team of hard-nosed ball-winning hacks.  The reason we lost games that we should have won this year is because we can't kick and in particular can't kick to the advantage of our forwards.  Goodwin's solution to this problem seems to be to get rid of the best kick in the side and recruit more hard nuts.  While Lever should help our backline disposal, he'll do nothing for the delivery to our forwards.

Give me Richmond's backline, Jack Riewoldt and 14 Jack Viney's and I think you'd win the flag in a canter. In fact if you can guarantee Oscar and Frost step up a bit give me our backline, a fully fit Hogan and 14 Jack Viney's and we'd get the job done.

Hunt and pressure the opposition in to coughing up the ball then run in numbers and compete for the footy when it's their to be won is what modern footy is about.

Skillful forwards with goal kicking accuracy and who can kick to a lead are nice to have but I'll take half back kicking and mids with clean hands around the packs

I am in the we shouldn't be trading watts camp. What I don't understand is that this time of year is about improving your overall list. Our list is better with jack on it than a mid-late second round pick.

I am annoyed at how the club has diminished any trade value and leverage it has as well as concerned about the effect on the team. Getting rid of a hugely popular teammate under these circumstances cannot be a good thing for togetherness and morale. Hardwick took his team to flag this year on that basis. Yes pressure play as well, which has been the knock on jack but I still think he makes our list better.

Coming to terms with that he is gone. We should be going after ports 2nd round next year as well as an upgrade of pick 45 to pick 30. That values jack as a pick 22. We hold the whip hand here. It should be on our terms and not throw him away for nothing. We held the whip hand in the lever deal also but bent over on that as well. I am not understanding what is going on at the club at the moment. It's starting to concern me and give me a sick neeld feeling. This feeling wasn't there before all this jack business. It was another sick feeling of missing finals

Ports team next year:

Sam Grey Charlie Dixon Chad Wingard

Robbie Grey Jack Watts Steven Motlop

Jared Polec Trav Boak T Rockcliff

Hamish Hartlett D Howard J Westhoff

Matthew Broadbent T Clurey, J Pittard

Ruck: Paddy Ryder, O Wines, S Powell-Pepper

Int: B Ebert, J Neade, J Hombsch, D Byrne- Jones

That’s a damn good team.

The irony of all this is that we are gifting a good player to help Port to finish much higher than us next season and maybe even a premiership. Well done Goodwin. Not!

If all or some of this is true I have even less faith in our senior coach than ever before. If having coloured hair caused the rumpus at pre season start then Goodwin is putting personal feelings before footbal ones. Where did you get the information on time trial results etc? Would love to look them up.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
