I always had very high hopes. At Casey he stood out like you know what.  The skills were natural. He made marking look easy, a graceful left foot , good football nous and was quick enough. Knowing his father pretty well I knew he had a bit of mongrel too. 

Sometimes clubs try and make players something their not to plug holes. When Goodwin let Fritta be Fritta in the forward line he started improving every game. 

Why is it that some left footers look graceful when they kick, but right footers never do?

    Not sure but I'm a believer that lefties do it better. 

    Fritta is more David Gower than David Boon!

    I think he's got soft hands and doesn't snatch at the ball, it just falls in to his hands.

    I watched the first half of the first game we played against the Bullies this year and it was amazing the number of times the Weid got first hands to the ball but he couldn't hold one of them. I would think that he should spend the summer getting lessons from Fritta as to how to mark the ball and not slap at it. If he could hold them he would be a very good footballer.

    Interesting thought, who would we play on him?  Of course would depend very much upon who else we had to cover, but maybe May or Hibbo? Very difficult match up.

    He should go into 2022 full of confidence and self belief.

    True about his hands but that's what you need generally. Your comment about Weid , if fixed, would make him invaluable. As an opposite you mentioned Weid, but think also of Chris Dawes - flat and hard.

    Fritsch holds the ball comfortably with one hand so size is helpful too.  Fritsch , once his hand are on the ball rarely has it punched away.

    Salems' first half was as good as I have seen so cool and skilled really made the backline settled and put pressure on BDs

    Funny you say that, does anyone do a “team of the finals”? Clearly it would be dominated by Dees players but would be interesting to see someone’s take on who the top performers were across the ground. 

    I still pinch myself at how cool and clinical Fritta was with his set shots at pivotal moments in the game. Ice in his veins!

    100 games this week, 150 goals, 6 in a GF. 

    Best Medium forward in the game (but wont get a AA for that)

    In my top 5 players. As pure and skilled a footballer as there is, great greedy goal sense and a team-based love of the game. Our most productive forward by some margin.

    He burns a lot of team mates though. I think thats a flaw in his game he needs to eradicate.

    One of my favourites. I love the way he goes about his football, and what he's achieved as a mature aged recruit with a dodgy back playing on defenders twice his size most weeks is unbelievable. Few players will ever kick 6 goals in a grand final again.

    From the first time I saw him grab a pack mark at Williamstown (mistook him for Weideman) I thought he could be special.

    Why Goodwin played him down back in 2018 I will never understand.

    In his draft year many said we should get him in the third round whereas I argued he would go late second.

    How appropriate that we used pick 31 for number 31 who did the greatest 31 proud in 21.

    Neither will Goodwin. Has gone on record saying it was a bad decision.

    Fritta is a lot of things, but he is not a defender.

    Jumped on board Fritta the moment I saw those grabs at Casey and then when he surprisingly slid to us in that draft. It was probably more hope than anything but I had this good feeling. Has done jobs all over the ground but it certainly feels an eternity ago when he was anything other than a forward. Great job Bayley, so proud!

    I never had that problem with Allen Jakovich. He's a forward and I reckon somewhat comes with the territory.

    Yes he does occasionally 

    But his main job is to kick goals. 
    but i do agree Goal assists are just as important

    Its a fine line isn't it? He's a good player and a hard match up.

    But he gets quite lippy if the mids don't put it on a silver platter to him then he burns people in a better position. And sometimes he looks so casual when he takes a shot that ends up missing. Frustrating but I guess we take the good with the bad.

    During last years finals we did lots of chip kicks to players in better positions. Earlier this year we lost that. The Brissy game we started to get better at doing that.

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

    • PREVIEW: West Coast

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.
