Sorry to steal your thunder @KC from Casey, but I thought I'd get the ball rolling.

After a very strong second half to the season, whilst being unbeaten at home, Casey find themselves with a top four spot and a double chance in September.

PETER JACKSON VFL 2017
WILLIAMSTOWN  v CASEY DEMONS

Burbank Oval (Williamstown)
Saturday 2nd of September, 2017 at 2.00pm

Now I've been going back over the team lists for the 2017 season, and by my understanding of the VFL Finals rules, I believe these Melbourne listed players will be eligible to play (excluding injured players):

  • Trengrove
  • Brayshaw*
  • Stretch
  • JKH
  • Weideman
  • Hulett
  • Bugg**
  • Spencer
  • King
  • Kennedy
  • Johnstone
  • Wagner
  • Keilty
  • Maynard

*Brayshaw has played 6 VFL games this season, making him eligible to play. However, he was concussed in the opening few minutes of one of the Northern Blues game, so if they don't count that game, he will have only played 5, making him ineligible.

**Even though Bugg has only played 4 VFL games, his suspension game against Sydney was on June 30th, 1 day before the July 1st cut off, and he hasn't played a senior game since, so I think this makes him eligible.

Also a couple of interesting things, Wagner only just scrapes in with 7 games, Pederson is ineligible having only played 4 VFL games, and out of every single AFL listed player, only Keilty has played all 18 games for Casey this season.

A lot of this is and will be speculation until we get confirmation from the club about who is and isn't going to continue into the VFL Final series, but at this stage we can have a reasonable guess at what the team lineup will be for Saturday, here's what I have so far:

CASEY DEMONS

B: 25. D .Gordon, 1. J. Hutchins, 45. D. Keilty
HB: 42. J. Wagner, 64. A. Brayshaw, 48. C. Maynard
C: 69. B. Kennedy, 9. M. Gent, 57. J. Kennedy-Harris
HF: 37. D. Johnstone, 26. S. Weideman, 83. T. Bugg
F: 55. L. Hulett, 2. B. Fritsch, 17. E. Morris
R: 59. J. Spencer, 54. J. Trengrove, 15. B. Stretch
I/C: 27. A .Scott, 35. A .Ferreira, 6. J. Munro, 34. M. King

23rd: ???????

Hopefully we get some more information soon and we can see what kind of team Casey and Melbourne will be bringing to this years Finals. It is a drastically different side that saw Casey finish Minor Premiers and Runners-Up in 2016, but at this stage it looks like Casey could absolutely take it all the way to the end.

Thanks for that, excellent work. Pity Pedo isn't eligible, but great that Bugg and Brayshaw are/should be. On paper, a strong side.

Thanks Drunkn - hopefully all those listed MFC players can play and don't need to be sent off for surgery.  I really hope Brayshaw plays - he has missed a lot of footy and needs games - and has the opportunity to play as a starting mid and develop in that role.

So I just had "official" confirmation, I was correct in my research, and those are the eligible MFC players, plus Mitch White if he can pull up from his Hamstring Injury.

It is now just a matter of who the club allows to play finals, and if they chose to rest players early/send them for surgery etc.

Good summary Drunkn!

Richmond who finished 5th in the VFL ladder is the only AFL/VFL team with unfettered access to their AFL list for VFL games (outside of usual eligibility. Be interesting to see how our Casey boys respond having the finals experience from last year.

Casey would be one of the more in-form team in the VFL doing a Sydney, after a 1-4 start, finished their season and finishing on a 11-2 run. The Casey team has had less help from the Melbourne list this year due to a string of injuries and suspensions this year so I wouldn't count them out to make some noise in the VFL finals series this year.

Do we know if this will be broadcast?

Not this game, no.

Channel 7 always do the Elimination Finals and not the Qualifying finals for some reason. So this Saturday will be the Richmond v Collingwood game. And then Essendon v Footscray on Sunday.

Hi all. No problem with Drunkn opening the batting on this one.

Its a relief to be thinking about something other than last Saturday! Something to look forward to amidst the wreckage.  Hope the players show up and support.

Aside from just wanting to win I reckon the finals series and the spotlight that comes with that will be  super important for a few players. Bugg will have something to prove , Spencer is going to want to show his wares. Would love to see Weid really step up, Trenners show the footy world he's still got something and I havent got to see Keilty yet, which Im looking forward to.

Drunkn I know you're pretty connected here but Im curious about your thoughts re Keilty. From the reports Ive been reading, seems like he's developing fast now and into a top intercept backman. If we did manage to pull off the lever trade, thats obviously the position lever plays, so what other positions could he play? I like to pick sides in my head over the summer lol

I wouldn't be surprised if Brayshaw is rested from the finals, but it would be bitterly disappointing if we revert to type and pull anyone else out.

In particular I see the next month as a massive opportunity for Stretch & Weideman to really step up and impose themselves at this level. Both should be aiming to be in the round 1 AFL side next year, and a strong finals series plus a big pre season would give them every chance to do so.

Ive been joking with Dec that if Lever comes, he's gonna steal Decs job hahaha

Keilty can hold up his own in a Forward/Ruck role, similar to Pedo, but in sorta younger, inexperienced way. But he definitely plays his best footy down back.

However he has shown his strength when going forward, after basically playing Defence all last year he was put forward in Casey prelim final v Williamstown where he kicked 2 great goals and was very influential.

If he has been named, and gone onto the ground he surely has played. Or is this something Gil has his hand in somehow: always willing to make up rules on the run?.

It will be interesting if Angus Brayshaw plays after missing so much of the season due to concussion. Do they rest him and get him fit for 2018 or does he get some games under his belt at VFL level?

Surely there are positives and negatives: 'twill be very interesting.

How good is it that we have all 14 playing and hopefully White will be right for next week.

I was interested in how many players we had in our grand final team last year who are playing first round of finals this year (thought others might to).

6 AFL players and 3 VFL players played both.
8 AFL new players playing now and 4 new VFL players
6 AFL players not playing (still Dees), 2 no longer Dees, 5 delisted, 1 VFL.

So technically we have more VFL players playing now than we did last year, but honestly I'd probably take this years line up over last year. Makes me realise that we have gotten much better as a team.

2016 Grand Final to 2017 Qualifying

Ins: (AFL) Wagner, Brayshaw, Maynard, JKH, Johnstone, Bugg, King, Stretch, (VFL) Gent, Gordon, Collis, Giobbi

Outs: (AFL Dees) Garland, J Smith, T. Smith, Oliver, White, ANB, (AFL Non-Dees) Dunn, McInerney, (VFL) Scott, (Delisted) Newton, M Jones, Terlich, Michie, Grimes,

Somehow this game has lost its lustre.

Not sure why.

Hopefully some players can show their wares in time for next pre-season but honestly if you were a casey AFL player 2017 was your year to break into the big time. That none of them did is disappointing.

Good luck and at least playing on a cold day at Willy is great practice for Hobart!!

Great to see that Brayshaw is playing, also the likes of JKH, Stetch etc. Gives them a bit more opportunity to work on their craft and develop.

Hey Drunkn,

Any idea why these two are out? They would normally be auto-inclusions (Scott and Morris)

It seems the team list I looked at was wrong I believe, coz I wouldn't have any clue why they'd be dropped because they've been playing some good footy, I think KCs lists are more accurate, it's just a matter of which fringe VFL players are in and out

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom
