Max was strangely umpired out of the ruck contests. After conceding 3 frees in a row at the centre, he looked unwilling to contest the next tap out. Never seen anything like that before.

He looked less than impressed with it all at a few junctures. Think despite his laughter the umping was plsslng him off big time, as it would !!  It was attrocious

Very harsh on Weideman IMO. He played his role and competed pretty well. Also showed a physical side I hadn't seen from him so I hope they persevere. He'll be better for the games and will be playing against players more his size against Brisbane. Watts didn't do enough yesterday to warrant a promotion next week.

He had 6 possessions Luther. Bloody woeful as usual. Had the chance to nail up the game in the last quarter but alas kicked true to form.

Both umpires were a disgrace today. Razor Ray especially. Aside from that and the terrible 3rd quarter it was a good team performance, great atmosphere too.

I would hope we make the point of asking the head umpire to take us through the new rule that affects the ruck contest that says "If the player is Gawn, then the opposition ruckman shall receive free kick for no obvious reason"

it was a disgraceful display of umpiring in that regard today and it was obvious Gawn held back on even contesting ruck for fear of giving away a free.

Did you watch the game?  Applied some really valuable tackles and pressure acts.  Made a contest, followed team rules.  Think he did OK.

Yeah, nah. Only 9 pressure acts. Watts doubled that against the Giants and tripled that against the Roos. Watts also averages 2-3 tackles a game this season which is pretty good for a tall forward.

Watts is out of form, been looking for the out the backs and hasn't been flying for them as much as he used to. AKA back to old habits. The posters who keep on saying it's due to pressure acts and tackles from Watts look misinformed when you read the stats.

Watts needed to go back to VFL to recapture form and do the things mentioned above. Weid was the only option for Goodwin to choose, with the key word being only.

If a taging player has 6 possessions would you be calling for noose? His role was to contest and bring the ball to ground, which is precisely what he did

All things aside ...I must applaud Raz's eyesight. Who else can give frees from 70m away...I ask you !!

He still needs to do a little more though, coach.  His role may well have been to bring the ball to ground and provide a contest, but he also needs to make more of those contests and hit the scoreboard with more regularity.

If we lost today, then Goodwin would have been criticised for picking Weid.  As it stands it doesn't look as bad as we bagged the four points.

I'm looking forward to him putting in another big pre-season as, clearly, he still isn't totally ready for AFL football.

That's not what I said, I was making the point that possessions are not the sole measure of success. If it were we would be on top of the ladder as we average the highest by any team this year. My point is that everyone has a role, I thought he fulfilled his role today.

Mr. Negative here,

Glad we won, but we were shithouse.

StKilda were just much worse.

The forward entries still a major concern, players bombing away when they should be looking around.

Pedo, well done, puts that ridiculous Pederson vs Weideman debate to bed.

Brayshaw, a great return game.

Hannan clutch.

Got issues

I don't disagree that he can be better and provide a little more. Every single player in our team can be better and do more. My point is that he did what was asked of him to the best of his ability, which is more than can be said of the alternatives.

I must have been watching a different game because I saw him get out marked repeatedly and struggling to make a contest and bring the ball to ground....  Add to that the fact he doesn't have the endurance to compete when the balls there to be won, he has no urgency when the balls in his area.. It's not his fault he's just not ready for AFL football yet

Maxy gave the umps a little whack after the game, according to fox footy. Said he gave away free kicks he's never given away in his life, and that they kept blowing the whistle and he didn't know why

Yes we need an explanation on all that

Fortunately Goodwin intends to speak to the umpiring department:  He was his usual tactful self but his intent was very clear “It was a really interesting duel. Billy played a really good game against Max but we will have to go through each of those free kicks and have a look...“That’s a lot in a game of footy so we will have to speak to Hayden about how that rule looks." https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/simon-goodwin-questions-max-gawn-free-kick-count-against-st-kilda/news-story/c58b772ab1fc8d2300372d3f93d98e0f

We have questioned stuff before behind the scenes eg frees against Oliver but this is the first time Goodwin has come out and publicly stated his intent.  I applaud it.

I honestly don't understand why we are pointing out negatives today.

I don't care than Hannan had 5 kicks for the day, 2 of them were clutch, end of story.

We had negativity all week on here and most asked for a response, well we got that today. Did some of you expect St Kilda to go home at half time? They needed to show something and they came at us hard in the 3rd and credit to them.

My heart stopped beating when they closed within 4 points but there were some massive moments from our boys to restore momentum.

Oscar and Lewis going hard at the contest in our back pocket in the last is what we have asked for this week and that was a prime example of putting the body on the line.

Some asked for leadership and we got it from Jones today.

If you want to play in finals this is how you need to play to win when teams challenge you.

Very proud today and looking forward to the replay!!

"I honestly don't understand why we are pointing out negatives today."

Because for once as a club we aren't accepting mediocrity, hence us improving and wishing to improve.

Razor Ray could give from 700 metres away he's that good. Which begs the question, why isn't one of us given the whistle ???? We would do as good a job sitting in the grandstand.  I would do it for a couple of hundred.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
