It's hard to believe for those of us who were around back in the day, that 1987 marks 30 years since the demise of World of Sport, an iconic programme which began in the early days of television in this country and was a viewing must for so many of us every Sunday morning.

There characters were larger than life, mainly lovable and with the recent passing of Lou Richards, most of them are no longer with us.

Geez watching Robbie in the handball competition brings back some great memories. It was pretty tough being a young fella barracking for the demons in the 80s. But luckily we had Robbie - what a star. It's funny to think now, but at the time I would take that handball comp very seriously and Robbie would rarely let me down!

Great memories.  I grew up with WOS as mandatory viewing every Sunday morning, without fail.  Was a real institution!  Although, I often got impatient with all the non-footy bits, just wanting them to get to the important stuff (the footy!)

In those days, the footy media consisted of blokes that did not take footy too seriously and had a lot of fun. Seriously good entertainment.

Was fortunate to meet most of the guys as my uncle was Colin Long and I went in a few times. Another good moment was I was catching the last  flight home to London from Dublin in 1976 and Ron Casey was sitting there and we met again.  Had such a great chat. Very interesting man. Great memories from that show.

For me, the skiing segments were like a rain delay in the cricket: the cue to go outside and kick a ball around. Though I fell in love with the Irish sport of hurling thanks to WoS.

On a side note - I've always thought that hurling would be as rich if not richer pool than Gaelic footy for AFL player raids. Something about the balance and movement of the sport strikes me as a closer match for AFL despite the difference in apparatus. Coincidentally, one of the sports greatest modern champions is a bloke by the name of Carey.

Indeed.

But they were infinitely more melodious than "Spitwater- that's what it does" .

As a consumer ,where once we were lulled into the purchasing possibility of a nice plain beer or a healthy pack of winfield reds we now get useless products rammed into sentences- stats are now owned by Bosch for example.

Its not even seductive- it's aggressive - as is most language in society. Nowadays.

Well the ads were getting longer and less coherent as the night wore on and then at about 2.30 a.m. Peter Landy appeared to do the advert saying Uncle had been taken home. Those were the days of live telly, anything could happen.
