POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 8

Could someone make a gif of that Oliver goal. Just W.O.W.

Was thinking there was no way we could win, until I started thinking of our midfield. It really is of the highest class.. not many teams can match the totality of Viney, Jones Oliver, Tyson and at times Petracca and tonight Vince. There is a fierceness about this group which plainly unsettles opponents.

and as it turned out, they won it for us. We overcame a huge imbalance in the ruck. And I agree--it was masterly to keep either Tom MCD or Pedersen on the forward line.

i can't resist saying it. Yes, Tyson makes mistakes, but how vital he was in the second half. He is bloody strong. Will always be better as others get slower in second halves

Q: “Did you know Tom McDonald could go forward and actually kick goals?”
BERNIE: “Well, the goals he kicked were floaters and that’s actually all he kicks, so I’m not sure how they floated through. Lucky there was no wind."

I'd keep tom McDonald at centre half forward from now on! His work rate and contested marking was fantastic! He and hogan would be a serious handful with watts the third tall

Missed the first half tonight but got to see the second half streamed on my phone. What an incredible and unexpected win! Go you bloody Dees! Absolutely amazing!

Wow, just wow.

Clayton Oliver is quickly becoming not just the best midfielder at our club but one of the best in the competition.  What a player.

Petracca into the midfield changed the game for us as well and hopefully he can spend more time in there in the coming weeks

What a one-two punch we've got here. Oliver was outstanding and what a goal!

Petracca was being wasted up forward when we couldn't win a clearance and like last week putting him in the middle got us back in the game. He wins the ball with brute force, keeps his feet and uses it well. I love him.

Waited forever come from behind win interstate.

Man down too.

That was just awesome.  Adelaide couldn't get free ball, we just kept pressuring them.  Sixth time in the history of the club we've gone over 90 tackles.  Jacobs had 74 hitouts but we won the clearances and smashed them in centre clearances 18-6.

How you pick the best players out of that I have no idea.  Pedersen was huge, Hibberd had 34 Disposals.  Viney had 30 and 12 tackles, Oliver 30, 10 tackles and a goal.  TMac turned the game when he went forward.  Petraccca in the midfield was unstoppable.  Vince tagger Sloan almost entirely out of the game. Jetta sat on Betts for all but five minutes, Salem had 31 quality touches...  Insane.

This was what we've been waiting to see from this side.  Controlled ball-use in attack, hard-nosed uncompromising defence and versatility to change things up when we needed to.  If we play like that we can beat any side in the league.  We just need to see it every week now.

So very, very proud of the boys. Awesome win.

This last part is what stands out to me, Ralph.  In amongst some of the disappointment from this year it's easy to forget how we've been in every single game so far.  Tonight it clicked for 4 quarters against the top side and we made them look second rate.  Consistency is still the key, but if we bring that effort over 4 quarters every week then, as you say, we can beat any side in the league.  Exciting times ahead!

Just two more comments before I retire for the evening (with glass in hand):

  1. I'm a pee poor judge of football, but I'm comforted by the fact that I have plenty of company around here.  Congrats to all of those who went against the odds and tipped, or even backed us.  Well done boys and gals.
  2. Goody can coach!

Goodnight all!

Viney is back, and brilliant coaching especially putting TMac in the forward line.

The boys really wanted it and they got it!

Yeah probably confused Adelaide in the same way it did me. Initially thought TMac was just lost out of position :)

Adelaide forum looks like ours last week.

The old line 'one week at a time' rings true here and not for the reasons you may think.

I get sick of this habit so many have on here of looking at the next 5 and assuming that we will either win (should we get up) or lose (should we lose a game 'Landers expect we should win).

It goes to show that the season isn't over after one game, no matter how gut wrenching the final result is. It also goes to show that one good win does not a season make (no matter how much commentators wish to weave it into a narrative of the win making a club).

And to that peanut who sent that letter to Goody, I hope your bloody membership stays cut up. I have only ever e-mailed the club ONCE over poor performances and that was after we got flogged by 102 points against the Swans (with Howey taking mark of the year in front of a scoreboard showing us down by 80 points, Tommy Walsh looking like John Coleman, Ryan O'Keefe stunned at the lack of pressure in one of the goals and Col Sylvia laughing at the final siren). I never threatened to not sign up again but THAT is being justified in some of your criticism.

Those who said the sky was falling last week need a bloody hard look in the mirror.

That was an amazing performance. With the players who were out, playing the flag favourites interstate, Jayden Hunt gone for half the game, we had no right to win, let alone thoroughly dominate like that.

We played the way we wanted to play for four quarters, but I think it all started from the pressure we applied and the tackle count.

Yep and best of all I pocketed a couple of hundred bucks after putting a lazy $20 bucks on!!

Yep, consistency is all that is in question. We have the tools to be a top 4 side. Hopefully that is a big shot of confidence and an example of what a four quarter effort (almost) can do

I thought kent was good tonight. Did his job. We look better with kent in the team.

Wow I just cant believe what I saw. What a great win. So mnay highlights.

Our backline was brilliant. Frost coming in makes a difference, Jetta just shut out betts and Walker was held really well.

Vince on Sloane was awesome. He held him to just 11 possessions. Bern should be given that role more often.

Oliver wow that goal is goal of the year material. He is just brilliant.

Our 2 cpatains stood up tonight and played brilliantly. Jonsey kicked 2 important goals when it was most needed.

Trac give him more midfield time. He was great bringing it out.

Pedersen- Fantastic, held his own and kicked 3 goals. I wonder if we picked him earlier in the season instead of weiderman things may have been different. But he is doing a great job.

Tommy Mac, what a great coaching move putting him forward. I suppose him playing on the good forwards he would learn what they do. But he kicked 2 goals.

Even Bugg contributed. He took a great mark and kicked 2 important goals.

Hibbard what a recruit. Awesome just awesome.

Anyway so happy but next week we just have to back it up. This team is so bloody frustrating to support sometimes. Tonight and for the rest of the week we are happy, next 3 weeks we have Nth, GC and Collingwood. Time to make a stand.

Its also amazing how good you look when you actually kick the ball and not handpass. Our long kicks were great tonight.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
