If Tyson is left out of the 22 I'll 100% accept your explanation and eat big humble pie.  But I think he will be in and rotate through the midfield.

I'm pretty sure you're correct in that it is essentially a squad list and the teams put forward a team sheet with names on it nothing more. Nev Jetta could line up in the forward pocket and we could swap Hogan into defence, it's not set.

But generally speaking if your in the "starting 18" you will be playing. The extended bench is usually where they drop names from. JKH will very likely play.

My prediction for the final bench will be Salem, Tyson, ANB, and Stretch.

Kent needs to back up his game at Casey with a repeat performance, he doesn't seem to have much consistency. I don't see us needing OMac, unless they want to play TMac as a relief ruck at times and need another defender for Roughead. But with Frost and Watts as back up rucks, and Pederson can drop back into defence if needed, I think we'd be too top heavy with Oscar in.

I'll probably be completely wrong though!

No way Tyson goes out. Wasn't the point I was inferring. ;)

His last very good game was against Hawthorn. Fingers crossed for another one.

Tyson is in the midfield rotation. By definition they can't all be on the ground at once.  The named starters are Vince, Viney and Oliver - I'm fine with him not being named ahead of them.  What position do you expect to see him named in - fullback?

Yes Einstein

I reckon we're more likely to struggle a bit this week and put out a really good performance against Adelaide. Can't wait for the Crows game.

Or, heaven forbid, we back up a really good showing this weekend with another against Adelaide.

Let's stick with the old cliche of "one week at a time". Let's deal with the Hawks, they'll be under fire after last week and people questioning their resolve. Hope Lewis smashes them, will be interesting to see if the Hawks fans boo him.

I just hope when Hogan first gets a hold of the ball the Demon fans give him a big cheer and if/when he kicks his first goal the boys really get around him.

I think dropping Melksham is the right decision.

Not entirely sure who comes off the extended bench (yes, they always do. There might be a late change on Sunday but for the purposes of tomorrow, the three emergencies are three of the current 7 on the bench). I'm certain it won't be Salem. The rest, less certain.

I guess my point was we're more likely to play poorly against Hawthorn and better against Adelaide. Let's hope we can deliver both weeks.

And I think they'll cheer him. He was effectively pushed out. He didn't walk.

Well done wrecker! I spent 30 mins looking and gave up

Interestingly the reg doesn't say the starting 18 have to be the same starting 18 between first and final lodgement, but I think it is inferred (as with most things AFL, open to interpretation)

Yeah agree it is not clear that the 18 players named the first time on the ground have to be the same in the second lodgement but as small but forward says it is inferred albeit not very well.

I'd like Hogan to play a bit of a decoy role, drag the defenders away and we hit up an in-form Petracca. Or Hannan. We were unpredictable last time we played them and it worked a treat.

Bench...  Tyson, Wagner, Stretch and Salem!

Agreed.

Happy to see Wagner back. Even if he doesnt make the cut this week it will be very soon. Thought his debut season was very underrated, not many first year players show that sort of composure especially off half back (although he was mature aged). He found the ball with ease, showed good foot skills and laid a lot of tackles. He can play on taller forwards too which is a bonus.

Basically, a huge upgrade on Melksham and O Mac.

If not it wouldn't surprise me to see a change or changes this week.

No, which is I used the word "virtually".

I've seen it done before, but it's highly unlikely.

Anyone else feel uneasy with us suddenly being heavy favourites to beat the Hawks when we have been smashed by them for a decade? very unnerving

but then you look at their team and there is not much to fear. Their inside midfield was not great last year but now without Lewis and Mitchell it is poor. They lost run with Hill and their older guys look very old this year.

Absolutely. Feels weird. And not in a good way.

I loved comparing the benches. Obviously their 18 will have names. Every club has a Salary Cap they spend on the highest currency players in the League. Cyril, Smith, Breust, Gunston... But check out their extended interchange vs ours...

Us: Salem, Tyson, Stretch, Kent, ANB, OMac, Wagner.

Them: Sicily, Hartung, Whitecross, Brand, Langford, Howe, Hardwick.

Man that makes for pretty reading.

Great get, Wrecker.

I'm not sure if it covers whether a player named in the squad of 18, i.e. non emergency, can be removed from the starting squad, although I recognise insinuation by definition.

thank you wrecker, good job,and i'm sorry you spent a whole hour searching. i have pasted below the relevant sections.

The section in green seems to support your claim, however (at least to me) the wording in its entirety (including the wording for final list on friday) is a bit ambiguous and poorly written (what's new for afl). Additionally it seems out of date as it includes reference to substitute players. Finally the Sanctions section makes no reference to a fine for omitting a player from the thursday 18 "player position list" on friday (as long as the replacement is part of the thursday named 25 players full list.

If I was a coach i reckon i could drive a truck through those loosely worded "regulations" if i wanted to play funny buggers with the opposition:)

P.S. i've never doubted that standard practice has been (in last few years) to cull the thursday list on friday from the original named 7 "emergencies" (aka "extended bench")

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
