Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Care to name names? I cannot believe in this day and age of accurate knowledge on the effects of smoking on the body that professional footballers much less any sportsman would smoke. Putting on my old Phys Ed Teachers hat,

Smoking is well-documented as a serious hazard to your health. It is also a serious hindrance to athletic performance, as it inhibits oxygen supply to your brain, heart and muscles. In addition, smoking decreases your body's capacity to heal, weakens your skeleton and raises your blood pressure. Athletes who smoke have less endurance, are weaker and suffer more injuries than their nonsmoking competitors.

Pulmonary Effects

Smoking has a pronounced effect on available oxygen in the body. The nicotine in cigarette smoke causes constriction of the bronchioles, which decreases the amount of oxygen that can enter the lungs. At the same time, nicotine constricts the blood vessels, decreasing the amount of blood flowing to the lungs. In addition, the smoke itself irritates the lungs, causing further bronchoconstriction. Carbon monoxide from smoke binds to hemoglobin, which would normally bind to oxygen, further decreasing the amount of oxygen the bloodstream.

Cardiovascular Effects

Smoking also limits cardiovascular performance. The heart depends on oxygen to function and, when oxygen levels are reduced, the heart is compromised. Nicotine's constriction of the blood vessels raises blood pressure and adds to the workload of the heart. Thus, athletes who smoke become fatigued faster than those who do not.

Musculoskeletal Effects

Smoking negatively affects the muscles and bones as well. During athletic activities, muscles need a constant supply of oxygen to perform. Smoking decreases the amount of blood flowing to the muscles. In addition, smoking lowers the amount of oxygen in the blood, further decreasing the muscles' ability to generate additional energy for movement.

Smoking increases a person's risk for osteoporosis. This effect is amplified in female athletes who already have a predisposition for osteoporosis. As the skeleton becomes more fragile, athletic activities become more dangerous due to risk of bone fracture.

Effects on Healing

Smoking causes the release of enzymes that break down collagen, a protein in skin and connective tissue. In addition, smoking slows the synthesis of collagen, which is necessary for healing. When tendons, ligaments or bones are injured, collagen fibers are integral to the healing process. Athletes who smoke will heal more slowly than nonsmoking athletes.

Long-term Effects

Smoking has immediate effects on athletic performance, but there are also long-term effects. Smoking causes lung cancer, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and asthma. These severe respiratory conditions can permanently end your athletic activities.

I would imagine the club would have explained these fact to players and given the professionalism expected If I were Goody I would not be at all impressed. But I have been known to be wrong!

So don't smoke then. But stop acting like a self righteous [censored]. Do you drink alcohol? I hope not. That's bad bad bad. Kills people, breaks up families, causes cancer. Nasty stuff. What about soft drinks? May as well just eat a bowl of sugar. I'm not comfortable paying taxes for your diabetes, so I'm glad you don't. Processed food? Hot dogs, dim sims, pies, maybe some KFC? Nasty again. Heart attack waiting to happen. I hope you've given that up. Wouldn't want to lose you young. And how about BBQ's? Carcinogenic, and what it does to your bowels isn't worth mentioning... except for the bit about how bowel cancer is a major killer... coz we eat so much crap. Not you. I mean other people. Probably the most important thing is that you don't drive a car or use electricity, because that would be really bad. Not only would you be creating pollution to breath yourself, but (even worse!) you'd be making others breath your second hand muck (and some of them are kids. Won't somebody think of the children!)

I'm not having a dig at you. I'm sure you live in the dark, ride a bike to your work every day, recycle your own farts to power you computer, and only eat organically grown lettuce and sunflower seeds fertilised with your own poop. I'd hate to think my admiration of you would lessen if I found out you were unmasked as a hypocrite, but I have faith in you, Picket.

No-one is more anti-smoking than me.  I smoked for 14 years.  In the last 10 years that I smoked I smoked 60 a day.  I gave up cold turkey February 23, 1993 and have never had one since.   The date is poignant to me due to my incredible addiction to nicotine.  I had an ashtray on the tiled ledge outside my shower, because I smoked in the shower.   I smoked in bed before sleep and it was the first thing I did when I woke up.

The tut-tutting over Hogan having a dart, when he's obviously not a smoker, but a young guy at a concert trying to be a 22 year old for a mere moment is beyond a joke.  Going home and escaping for a couple of days as he conteplates his Father's illness sheds light on the situation.  Does anyone here seriously think he's a regular, or problem smoker ?

The outrage industry is alive and well and ready to judge or condemn at the drop of a hat.

I agree with everything you've said in this post. It's not political correctness though.

And as I've said multiple times myself in this thread, the fact we're still talking about Jesse having a ciggie is pathetic.

I recall a game at the Western Oval, Dees versus the Dogs, 1963. At three quarter time the public was allowed onto the oval to listen to the coaches, what have you.

I remember being astounded to find Alan Rowarth sucking on a Craven A like there was no tomorrow.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
