True, but unless they are unrestricted free agent, you still have to trade for them

Well trade away, is all I can say.

With the Demons officially in the final 4, the best pick the Crows can hope for now from us is pick 15.

The Jake Lever trade has washed through the system now and can be viewed in (close to) completion.

The 2 1st rounders we traded both ended up with Carlton and they chose O'Brien and Stocker.

We took Petty with the 2nd rounder we got back.

It's harder to track the late future 3rd and 4th round pick swap because we combined our 3rd with another 3rd and swapped that to the Saints for a 2nd so we didn't end up with the player at that pick and it would be a bit of exaggeration to say we got Jordon with it because we added something but it's as close as I can get.  The future 4th round pick we traded ended up at St. Kilda and they took Robbie Young.

So ...

In: Lever Petty Jordon*

Out: O'Brien (Carl) Stocker (Carl) Young (St.K)

Clearly "bent over" : )

This is where the sad sacks jump in complaining about Levers shot knee.

I was interested to revisit the Lever deal after there's been quite a lot of coverage about him this week and one article talked about us overpaying for him.

I'll put my hand up and say I thought two first rounders was way over for him, however, you can't just look at the headline swap and not take into account the other picks. I've had a closer look at the deal. I won't go into all the incredibly complex deals around all the swaps etc but in effect this was the end result in players.

We effectively got Lever, Petty and Sparrow. Sparrow included our 2018 pick 37 on top of the Lever deal.

They effectively got Bryce Gibbs and I can't really work out what else.

The two first rounder picks we gave up became :-

2017 pick 10 Carlton picked Lochie O'Brien

2018 pick 19 Carlton picked Liam Stocker.

In the end it looks like an extremely good deal.

In the end it looks like we paid unders.  Bad luck Adelaide,  Lever is a [censored] star.

This ones for taking Scott Thompson off us.

Thank god for Carlton and their [censored] recruiting.

All though, i don't really care. 25 year old Lever is dominating the competition.

Geelong gave up three first rounders for a 28 year old, downhill skiing, sook. Two first rounders for a 22 year old who was demonstrating everything we need at the club, both on and off field, was pretty cheap by comparison.

It really doesn’t matter what you pay for a player, if they end up fulfilling the role you recruited them for. Lever is a genuine A grade defender and we have built an entire team around him and May.

Sometimes you have to pay overs to get what you need, because it’s a hard find, and sometimes you get really lucky and pay unders like we did with Langdon.
Swings and roundabouts.

It's a strange quirk of the media that they only talk in terms of first round, second round picks etc. It's not like we handed over 2x top 5 picks for him.

Lever and third rounder for picks 10 and 19 = 2 first round picks - overpaid!

Lever and third rounder for picks 10 and 20 = 1 first round pick and exchange of later picks - bargain!

I'd doubt there's a single dees supporter (and certainly no one at the club) that wouldn't do that trade again in a heartbeat.

This is exactly right. And if you have a look at the "1st round" picks available in those drafts we might realistically have taken, its a whole bag of nothing.  Lever in the hand was worth 2 in the bush unquestionably.

Interesting to revisit this trade.

We were widely condemned at the time for over paying but let's actually look at what came in and out.

In came Jake Lever, a 2017 second round pick (Harrison Petty) and a 2018 third rounder (traded on to St. Kilda who picked Matthew Parker)

Out went 2017 pick 10 (Lochie O'Brien), a 2018 first rounder (Liam Stocker) and 2018 fourth rounder which ended up with Fremantle (Brett Bewley)

Jake Lever is an AA defender and still just 25 years old. Harrison Petty was steak knives and may yet be an AA quality defender himself.

I'm sure JT would have used the outgoing early picks much more wisely than picking [censored] O'Brien and Stocker, but it still goes down as one of our all time great trades and still has 10+ years to go.

Did Lever give a reason for choosing us at the time?

The only club that got dudded on that trade is the Crows and i will give the Blues the benefit of the doubt, for now....

I'm not sure if he gave anything specific, but I'd put it down to the following factors:

  • Money and contract length. I think the offer was reported as 4 x 700k a year
  • Previous ties to the MFC. He was close with Paul Roos and nearly got drafted by us in 2014
  • Melbourne were an attractive prospect at the time. A lot expected us to be on the cusp of success. Jordan Lewis chose us 12 months previously precisely for this reason (but obviously mistimed his run and should have chosen Richmond). We won 12 games and were damn good at times in 2017
  • He reads the future as well as he reads the ball

His family is in Melbourne (Romsey) as well.

On any other day that last match was 3 votes, Virgil Van Dyk would have been happy with that game.

MFC game 100 this weekend I believe. Been fantastic for the club.

Any special banner planned @WalkingCivilWar?

Edit: he just recently had his 150th afl game, can't remember if he got a banner then. Don't want him to get too much or an ego.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
