Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

I'm not sure Simon Goodwin will be as conservative as Roos was. Joel Smith is very close to my best 22 and if he plays well in preseason he might just get in.

The fact that everyone is entitled to their own opinion is one of the beauties of a forum such as this, but to me that is very optimistic, premature and / or fairytale thinking.

I do hope you end up right by the way.

Mono, I think this is exactly where I stand on the subject.  Thanks for wording it in a way that I couldn't!!!

DeeSpencer I'm a huge fan of Smith having watching him a number of times at Casey.  I don't think he will be at Round 1 but by the end of the year I think you will be right.

I don't really care about being right or wrong. To sound a bit like Saty I want all of our players to do as well as they can and for the best team to come through.

That being said here's my thinking.. I'm not convinced of Hibberd as the 3rd tall defender, he's strong in the air but really not tall enough for it to be a perfect option every week. Frost is an exciting prospect and the incumbent in that position. But he's one dimensional, panics with the ball and isn't nearly as strong in the air as a guy his height should be.

Other options: Garland - nope, Keilty - doubt it, Wagner - certainly, but we'll probably have Hibberd, Vince and Salem as ball users so the balance might favour another pacy option.

My current round 1 team moves between Frost and just playing Hibberd, but either way Smith would be the next medium/tall defender in line.

My point is just to illustrate that Goodwin might see how they waited a few weeks to get those guys in last year and decide he not to be as patient this year.

I think it will be one of the more interesting things this year.  Will we play players purely on form or will we develop.  Last year there was a clear emphasis on development and getting games into players we thought would play in our "best" future team.  I don't think that will happen this year as much.  The only two I see getting games ahead of schedule are Weideman and J Smith.

McCartney trolling.

Would be curious to know what injury Trengove was carrying through the second half of the season...

Thank you, I don't care who is in the 22 each week

On Smith (Joel), he is developing at an alarming rate, looks better and better each session

We have another B class rookie in Maynard who takes part in everything as well and doesn't look out of place, reckon he is going to surprise in his first few games at Casey

Not sure on the Trenners injury, he's never mentioned another issue to me, always talked about getting foot right

Not much doubt in my mind that my comments Trenners will need to be an inside mid to get regular senior selection were correct based on this quote from Macca:

'the focus with him has been on some areas of his game around his footwork, agility and his ability to win the ball in tight'

(also not much doubt agility is code for speed - or lack of it as the case may be)

Dom Tyson

He’s really come on again. His running, his understanding of the game and where he positions himself – he’s become pretty close to an elite, first possession player. He’s very good around the ball and distributes it well. I think you’re going to see an incredible young player emerge in the next one to two years. Dom had an unfortunate setback just before Christmas, but he’s attacking his rehab in the same intensity as his pre-season.

Bloody hell. This is a wrap.

Actually, I didn't read "agility" as code for speed, or, at least, foot speed. I thought it meant more about the ability to move himself or the ball laterally.

Agree. I'm sure they want him to have more burst and evasion in tight.

Steele Sidebottom is the only elite outside mid I can think of and he has amazing skills on both side, reads the play perfectly, is strong overhead and times his run to get to or break from contests.

There's a heap of slow inside mids, most teams have one or two, but they usually have really good agility and strength. Sam Mitchell is the ultimate example of a guy with a great sidestep and really strong core who can stand up in tackles.

I don't either, I reckon it is all about him being confident in the foot, and getting his lateral movement and step up to the level it was pre injury,  hence the work he has been doing with Misso, he is not running in a straight line when doing the exercise with the large lead/band

Fair enough. LDC, DS and your argument has convinced me there was no code. I for one think Trenners can be a regular senior player if he can improve the skills he needs to be a gun inside mid and as importantly average 25 possessions plus per game.

Been saying for a while that Dom is a similar type player to Joey Kennedy. Looks like Macca thinks he can move up to that level, good news for us.

A very important  part of our midfield mix...our strongest player over the ball, gets things moving and can kick a goal.

Averageing 25 disposal a game is elite numbers. I think your being a tad harsh saying he needs to average those numbers to make it when realistically he should be aiming for around the 20-22 mark as a midfielder/half forward. I can't see him being the full time midfielder we'd like him to be because we know he can take a grab up forward when resting. Personally id like to see him of a half back as i think his poise and calmness with the ball would be important for us down back.

How good is this write up for Viney! Love the kid and his intensity and passion for the club!

"Jack Viney

Jack had a slow start to the pre-season, due to injury. But the first day he got back, you could hear the whack in the contest. The contest area had a real intensity about it when Jack was back in there, so he’s been managed a bit. He’s a high talent and has a high love of the club. The way he spoke about the club – and the people in it – after winning last year’s best and fairest sums up Jack the person. Through the family connection, there is no player more invested and committed to driving Melbourne up the ladder than Jack."

Hibberd is the best kick in our backline. Salem would be up there if he could get on the park. Hibberd is not there to play on tall defenders.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
