Standout observations:

Hogan looks amazingly fit and content.

Petracca has slimmed down remarkably.

Tim Smith regularly outmarked anyone he was up against.

Tyson, Jones, and Watts were standouts.

Even hearing him on the news last night was like listening to a different person. Perhaps a number of factors last year weighed heavily on him. Hope it bodes for a huge year

Found out what was wrong with Clarry, one of the victims of the asthma/hay fever storm a couple of weeks ago, on medication, trained strongly, highlight his one on one battles with Jonesy

Goody had them doing a lot of contact work today, most came off complaining of sore forearms, obviously the first serious hitting in a while

Paraphrasing

Me "Goody, they are all whinging anout sore arms"

Goody "Good, it won't do them any harm"

Interesting innovation in tackling drill, they have to hold tennis ball in each hand, so they have to use arms and body and not grab

Agree Hogan is in a really good place.

So is Watts, had a handball drill where player has back turned and has to spin and handball  to one player out of three who isn't holding a ball, with his basketball skills, Watts turned this into comedy routine, particularly when Gus Brayshaw was the 'piggy' resulting in a quick headlock on Watts by Brayshaw

Mitch King is not far off had him rucking against Greg Stafford

I have to work now, got some good pics Including newbies will put them on Instagram and Twitter tonight, any questions feel free

Hopefully, nothing more serious than someone tackling him by his beard!

This is why we need better ruck depth. Hopefully it's nothing serious as we need Max firing again if we are a chance at finals next year!

I feel cheated that we don't get 3 word observations for each player!  Robbed!!

Thanks for the feedback though joeboy, really great to hear how Hogan is travelling at the moment!

Thanks for the update. My heart sank for a minute there! Bring on 2017!

Thanks for the reports - much appreciated.

Aside from the asthma, can anyone comment on the aerobic fitness and, in particular, the conditioning of Clarry.  I was a little worried by some of the training reports and photos of him that have been logged here and on the AFL site.  Hopefully they were bad angles...

To be fair, I doubt anyone at the club would immediately say to any supporter that 'it's a serious injury' at training.

Fingers crossed though ey.

Actually yes.

As those who attended training would attest, Hogan actually smiled ( many times ) and they weren't grimaces.

Last year Hogan was noticeably heavy, not running as well as he had previously and spent a lot of the time scowling. Saty told me he was fine but I think it's now clear he wasn't. I wouldn't be making comments about his overall happiness but hardly a shock that being fitter and running on top of the ground would have you enjoying training more.

Yes they were bad angles.

From my perspective he didn't look lean ,but his body looked strong and his aerobic capacity allowed him to compete comfortably with anyone who opposed him.

It's amazing that Petracca has lost 6kg because he's still noticeably thicker in the legs than almost every other player.

I'd like to hire Byron Pickett as his personal bumping coaches because whilst it might cost him a few weeks on the sidelines if he can lay a few shepherds with his size and power he could make everyone walk taller.

Clarry has an ability to raise his fitness, speed and footskills to high levels when needed and then to look like he can barely run a lap or kick a drop punt when its not a competitive endeavour.

Robert Harvey had a similar ability - though to be fair he was super fit and Clarry has long way to even get close to that level of fitness. But Harvey always looked knackered after chasing or running with the ball.

If he's had asthma then it's almost impossible for anyone to comment on his aerobic fitness. It's no wonder he was off the pace according to some on here, if you've ever suffered from it you will know why.

No it was Max I asked, he completed most of the session, probably precautionary, probably landed a bit awkwardly or something

On Clarry, it knocked him around, fine  now, picking up the load

Thanks for the training reports, much appreciated!

Did we ever find out what Oliver's punishment was from the club for his drink driving offence?

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
