I shall clarify.

Does anyone ON THESE BOARDS know anything about him?  :)

Shifter Sheahan on Fox Draft show, said he was very hard at the ball and with some mongrel in him, as well as a radar for the big sticks.

He is our smokie. Might be a chance. Sounds like he is a harder and nastier JKH.

Wasn't James Strauss the last captain of Scotch College to play with Melbourne?

Not suggesting it's enough to draft him but our defenders have been slow for over a decade (maybe 5!).

The training benefit of getting some more speed and pressure is a pretty handy improvement alone, not to mention getting some proper pressure for spots in that forward pocket role.

The other thing I like about him is I'd rather a small forward who needs his skills cleaned up a bit than a silky mover at under 18 level who isn't up to it with body contact and tackling. It's almost a defensive first position these days and it's a difficult role to kick more than a couple of goals in a final no matter how good you are. So I like that Johnstone is taller and harder at it than most small forwards.

Inside Football

Dion Johnstone 1/6/98 Ht: 179.4cm Wt: 73.4kg Oakleigh Chargers

"Dion is one we didn't see the best of until late in the season being a country boy, being a scholarship boy from Scotch, but he is an ultra-competitive beast. He just has that will to compete and probably plays on to a degree, but good players do that. In terms of the intensity and velocity of the game at the next level out of our group he is closest to what you would expect at AFL level - you know what you are going to get with him. Late in the season was able to really hit the scoreboard and he plays that pressure forward role really well and had the ability to kick bags." - Oakleigh Chargers talent manager Craig Notman

Strengths: competitiveness, goal sense, defensive pressure

NTI: ball winning

Really reminds me of Max Gawn, except that he's a lot shorter, looks nothing like him, doesn't play in the ruck and has a completely different skill set.

And no beard.....

While I was underwhelmed last night, I've looked at the highlight packages and thought about what I wanted coming into the draft - speed, hardness, and the ability to kick the football. While I didn't know these 2 existed I was worried that we were going to get 2 boys without kicking skills as most of this draft were average at best kicks. The highlights and scouting reports show great kicks, speed, hardness for the contest (great tackles) and a disregard for anything other than the goals (which we dont have a lot of).

While I hope that our best 22 is so strong they struggle to break in, I hope they put on a lot of pressure with Hulett in a dominant Casey forward line.

I see the resemblance, too.

Looks quick, angry and  good tackler. Could be anything or nothing. A bit of a surprise considering we have Garlett, JKH and Kennedy on oir list.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
