As blokes like Robbie Flower and Trevor Barker knew, there is value in being a one club player.
Will he be welcome back at Geelong? Probably but his sense of belonging won't be as strong had he chosen to stay there after the 2010 season.

I have also heard that he is not well liked by a most of his teammates (directly from a former Suns player). This will probably be a blessing in disguise in that he will lose the captaincy and they will unite behind lynch.

Fair bit of tall poppy here for one of the greats.   Played the game at an almost unprecedented consistent high level and did it fairly.   He sought to go home but did so quietly without playing it out publicly and forcing the clubs hand as is commonly done.  He has always struck me as a person who wants to act with some integrity.  

Give the bloke a break.

Integrity would imply him following through on his original promises to build a culture of success and hopefully snare a flag.

But it seems that when the going gets tough, the tough get going Ablett wants to go back to his security blanket.

"Tall poppy"? No one's bagging his playing ability. He's an out and out superstar. He's had a bad run with injury. Can't be held to fault for that.

"Forcing the club's hand"? He has forced their hand. How can they have him as captain now that he's shown he's not committed to the journey?

 

I can't help but compare this to people like Lynden Dunn who have slaved away through dark and hard times. Dawes taking a leap of faith which didn't pay off for him. Matt Jones and other journeymen. Slaving their guts out for a chance at some glory.

Gary's really let himself down I think.

You are seriously comparing Gary Ablett to Chris Dawes? Ablett achieved everything he possibly could at Geelong, both as an individual and as a team. He sought a new challenge at the Gold Coast, and admittedly was very well paid in the process, but I don't think he could give that club any more than he has - certainly not on the field. If anything, Dawes is the one who left his club for the security of a long term contract on big dollars, and failed to perform.

In terms of slogging it out through hard times, yes I am.

Ablett at the Suns ... so he can't give any more than he has. But somehow he's got a bit more to give to another club.

Dawes' on-field challenges have been well covered elsewhere. He's had tough times at MFC. How did he respond? By asking to go back to Collingwood? Or by knuckling down and busting a gut to try to make it?

GCS probably front-ended the contract and paid him big bucks up front, and he's now playing for much less. The Suns might have entertained the trade if the payment scheme was the other way round and back-ended with the big bucks still to come.

Compare him to almost any of the recent players who expressed an interest in going home  while contracted.   There is a difference. 

He explored whether they would let him go and it may have been in their interest to let him go....behind closed doors.   

For Jordan Lewis both parties explored whether they would waive a current contract for their own purposes ...they did.   Ablett explored the same possibility.
