I think perhaps the 'opt-out' Dedicated Demons automatic sign-up, taking effect in the last week or so and seemingly very efficient this year, might have had a snowballing (unfortunate stereotypicalling reference) effect for the early figures - the providers of the previous year's member-growth being re-signed automatically without fully realising it. I hope I'm wrong, and the early 3000-above-trend in fact continues to 45000+ by mid 2017!

Could be the case, it's the first year mine and my partners memberships have rolled over automatically. I generally don't sign up until the start of the season.

Yeah I don't get my new AFL membership package til next year, but I wouldn't be surprised if AFL Melbourne members were included in the numbers shown.

Here is a list of dates and membership tallies over the past few years. I will update as we hit each date again this year. Its handy it is on the first page. It will be easy to reference until the end of the 2017 membership tally. Mods it would be good to tack this topic at the top of the board as it will be recurring for most of the next year.

Demons Membership Tallies

Thanks for collecting all that info, I T.

Hope you don't mind - I've put all your data into a table to have a 'ready reckoner' so to speak.  I've not used the exact date as they rarely match up from year to year - so I've used month and week so comparisons will close enough.

Hope it helps posters/readers do easy comparisons of trends and where we are at.

In recent years there has been quite a leap in the lead up to Christmas (Xmas presents...and then another leap around the time of Family Day.  Hopefully this year we can add a few more leaps after winning some pre-season games and early rounds in 2017.

45,000+ in 2017 is very doable:cool:

I think you will find that the leap in the pre-Christmas over the recent years is due to the advent of Direct Debit.

As a final word on the MCC/MFC membership there is a small proportion of MCC (so-called) Demon supporters who are too lousy to take out the add-on MFC membership despite the modest cost. The MCC/MFC members as a group are generally a passionate bunch and hold these others in disdain.

MCC now offer club based membership benefits for all clubs (hence why they ask you to nominate a team), the MFC's the the most thorough. However as a new MCC Member I have decided to retain my Trident membership and not take up an MFC category through the MCC . As I want to sit with my wife a non MCC member in out usual seats on level 2, I don't think I could have done tht by taking up the MCC Premium option.

Love your work LH. Mods is there anyway we could set this table up at the top of this topic so it's the first thing people see on the topic. If its not possible here, perhaps we should start it again and have this as the first post.  LH ideally I would like to be able to access the table to add the latest numbers as we reach each of the relevant dates. Or you could do this.

I've pinned It's Time's table to the top of the board.  When I or other mods see any updated data we will amend.

This is great thanks George. It is a great idea to keep the two threads this one for comments and the other just for reference to the updated table. Maybe you should lock it and just access it to update it.

It's up to the MFC to entice these MCC members to take up a membership. They already pay a fortune for MCC and if they're paying $80 pp on top for nothing it adds up. Give them something for that $80, access to the club rooms, a premium members function, a presentation by the coach - something to make it worthwhile and more than just a donation.

The MCC  members who don't come on board are unlikely to be swayed by access to the Club Rooms or a presentation by the coach. You either want to support your team or you are stingy. I am happy to pay the money for a scarf each year.

Yep. looks like we're tracking well. More like 1000 up, I was just looking back at the thread and all the numbers and so deleted my comment.

Judging by the table above, it would seem we're approximately in front by 5000 members which is huge!

It would be nice to hit 30,000 by end Dec, which looking at the uptake in December over the past 3 years we should get 5-7000 members sign up over the next 5 weeks.

@george_on_the_outer As we are still in Nov week 3 might I suggest the current figure of 25,432 be shown on that line, in the tally thread - it makes the comparisons to prior years more meaningful.  And, for consistency and comparisons, the Oct week 3 figure for 2017 should be 21,980, rather than 19,026.  Cheers.

From Oct week 3 to Nov week 3, we signed up approx 1,000 members per week!
And we are at least 5,200 up on a similar time last year.  That suggests a lot more new supporters rather than existing supporters renewing earlier than past years.
Is it too ambitious to think we might get to 40,000 before round 1:unsure:

I am impressed that you are privy to next year's October membership numbers already!

I wish I was so sage, CBD.

It was a reference to the table in this thread, which updates the running tally for next year:

^ 26,064.  This happens to me every year.  I think we are travelling well ahead of the corresponding time in the previous year, but this figure is surely well ahead now.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
