Would an extra pick have helped us when at the depths of our despair as a club?
Hell no.

Who cares? Give them another pick to waste.
It won't save them, and it won't hurt us.
I understand they were vocal against us getting one, and ideally we should return the favour, but I don't have the energy for something so insignificant to our future successes.

And given the pick at the end of round 1 back as a compromise.

Well it might hurt us if they take the player we want with that pick.

Also as they were so vocal against us, we owe it to them to return the favour.

This is a dog eat dog competition, as evidenced by their campaign against us getting a PP, when they could have done what you are suggesting and just let what happens happen.

I view Essendon getting Pick 1 (which is a massive asset no matter which way you shake it) as akin to the proceeds of crime. This wasn't just their gap year. It was like their jail year. Pick 1 is a reward to which they should not be entitled. It will look even worse if they manage to bounce back immediately next season.

And yes, in the jail analogy, we dropped the soap in Round 2.

Like getting workman's comp because you went to jail and were therefore unable to work?

You know, when it's framed like this, it's even worse.

Looks like Brisbane will get the pp http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/afl/brisbane-set-to-receive-priority-pick-in-national-draft/news-story/58702c952f6df1ce486137351a67df61

But likely to be at the end of the 1st round which I think is a reasonable outcome.

I agree, we need to move on from what we did or didn't get. The concern being if this becomes a regular cycle which it currently looks to be.

1 team in QLD.

I agree, end of first round is a reasonable outcome.

And yes I know we need to get over what we didn't get, but I would expect the AFL would need to clarify why there is a difference here, after making such strong statements against the pp in our case.

A plain, simple, cohesive and acceptable explanation is warranted. Somehow I doubt we'll get one though.

It's not the result of Brisbane getting a PP I can't stand, it's the hypocrisy (of both the AFL and the Lions, who argued so vehemently against us getting one).

I honestly can't see a PP helping out the Lions. They can't hold onto players. I also found it interesting that Rockliff and Hanley didn't go on their end of season trip. Those two went on a holiday together. Not good form by two players who are supposed to be leaders.

Maybe try help the club as a whole not by giving them one player.

While it's not the PP per se that I object to, it's as you said, the absolute hypocrisy of the parties involved.

The Lions argued the most strongly against us getting one and the AFL denied one several times, even though we more than qualified under the existing criteria.

The Lions won 3 flags and came second at their fourth GF in a row only 12 years ago. They were in the finals only a few years ago.

Everyone knows our history and especially the years before Roos came. It just can't be compared to the Lions.

They used every excuse not to give us one, we had injured players, we had good youngsters coming through, we had a nice jumper. The Lions except for the jumper are the same.

Add Beams and a few others back in and the development of the youngsters and a new Coach and they have a future.

I would accept the PP to the Lions if the AFL explained HONESTLY why we were denied and apparently they will benefit.

However  the AFL is anything but honest.

I am 100% comfortable with them getting a pick at the end of the first round, a new coach and a quality GM of footy, very similar to the assistance the AFL gave us, though not sure Fagan is in the same class as Roos.

Isn't the club shopping around Rockliff and Hanley for trade? I'd probably tell them to get stuffed as well.

Although Rockliff started the issues with his outrageous contract demands and poor demeanor.

Shows where this mob is at as a club.

Cant see how a PP will help them especially one at about pick 20.

Don't worry, no doubt they'll get their share of Isaac Heeney/Callum Mills freebies thanks to their Academy in the coming years. They're just playing the 'woe is me' card because they haven't got one this year.

Yet despite already having a substantial leg up on 14 other club with their Academy, the AFL still hands them a priority pick. If you can't retain your players, improve your shithouse culture. A fish rots from the head (and we should know better than anyone!)

I believe that the AFL got it wrong when they didn't award Melbourne an end of first round pp.  With that said however, the talent of the Brisbane list is light years away from where Melbourne's was 2012-2013.  A team that has Rockliff, Zorko, Beams, Martin, Hanley, Rich, Taylor, Mayes, Schache, Gardiner, McStay, Mathieson and Hipwood doesn't have a 'talent' problem; they have a coaching, development and retention problem.  They need a lot of assistance, but not a pp.

I too think that the AFL got it wrong when they didn't offer us a PP.

In 2012 we won 4, in 2013 we won 2, in 2014 we had 4 wins. That's 10 wins in three years.

In comparison Brisbane has won 14 games in the past three years.

Not sure how the AFL can justify Brisbanes request considering ours was rejected.

Yep, they should get Scum's pick instead of scum.

I think it's uncalled for.

They secured Schache at pick 2 last year and Hipwood at 14 and they'll take pick 2 to the trade/draft table this year.

Why don't the AFL expect the Lions to develop these high picks like they did with us?

4 & 13 for Scully

3 for Frawley

The AFL has looked after us one way or another.

We tanked, AFL found us not guilty, they still fined us 500K and basically paid it for us.

We got what was prescribed by the rules at the time. We were a crap club near the bottom and that was the prescribed compensation.

Trust me, I would rather have got 18 for Frawley and been happy with our flag.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
