In theory, yes. However, I'm not sure what Swan's long term vision is. Maybe it's because of the isolation of Brisbane in football terms but I'm wondering what the methodology behind his plans is. PJ was big on 'clean air' for about 8 weeks before cutting loose those who were surplus to requirements/not part of the future. Once that was settled, it was about getting the best people we could find in the industry and bring them to the club.

To be fair, I don't follow Brissy like I do Melbourne but I just didn't hear that from Swan until this week. If it was a salvage mission from the moment he walked in the door,  he should have been implementing his plan from moment dot.

CBF I have a brother who lives in Brisbane and is a Lions member. He has been telling me that they have been in trouble for three years. Basically they have had similar problems to the  MFC, poor board, poor recruiting and the added problem of having interstate recruits returning home and expressed that desire from day one  . They are really in a bad state the only thing stopping them from folding is the AFL. Does that sound familiar?

Afl now talking about 2nd round picks for teams who have missed finals for at least 3 years. They also mentioned us as we would qualify in that category, even though we are getting better. 

We might might end up getting a pick in 2 nd round.

Which is relevant to the level of compensation how?

The discussion is whether we were compensated for the player we lost.

They also need a better FIXture next year. They had a lot of 6 day turn arounds after they travelled if I heard it correctly. That would be a start. Then they need to get their development coaches right, no use sending kids up there with poor development programs. Their problem has been the kids keep leaving, why so many?

They absolutely need one, but since we didn't get it, the priority pick is dead and buried and they can go and get stuffed. 

They were very vocal about us not getting one and look how the tables have turned.

Luckily PJ doesn't have a short memory with issues like this -- I'm sure he's keeping that one up his sleeve for now.

It does. There are some differences though as we are all aware.
I felt one of our problems as well was that we, as Keating used to say, had been injected with 'a lethal dose of fogeyism'. Not to get all dee-luded on us, but diversity for us was if all of Melbourne's private schools had representation on the board and egalitarianism was judged by whether you allowed  your butler or driver to address you by your first name. We seemed to get the same good old boys in to run the club which lead to (as PJ said quite well) a propensity to not bring in the best that the industry had to offer.
Not sure if the Lions board is incompetent because of this kind of cronyism. They just seem to be useless due to other reasons. A lot of what happened in their earlier years seems to be repeating (blokes wanting to go home without barely getting their jock dirty). Wallsy took a stand on this in the early 90's with Nathan Buckley but retention seems to be a big issue.

One of their major problems is when they recruit youngsters from interstate,the club is unable to hang onto them. When this happens they have to start all over again. Decent coaches,assistants and CEO are a must. When players get delisted at the end of year from AFL clubs,the Lions should be able to pick up the first 6 players,they should be able to pick up the first 4 players from the NEAFL. In the national draft I would give them a priority pick after their first round pick. I consider this to be fair as northern state clubs tend to get milked more than other interstate clubs. GC may also  need help but not as much. We also talk about destination clubs,the Dees are now,nothern clubs are not.Another interesting point is if Paul Roos became their coach players would not want to become traitors.

I don't get the "spite" card - yeah we could've done with a PP but it wasn't essential. Brisbane have two issues, they're rubbish AND they're having trouble holding on to their young talent. BUT that's why the academies have been brought in and they got two guys last year (Keays and Hipwood) plus Schache and another early pick and more academy picks this year that should set them on the right path. Too late for Leppa but the next coach should be right.

If the AFL really wanted to help them they'd try and coax Roos to take on the job after finishing with us under the same circumstances (2-3 year option with a development coach brought in to transition to). And relieve some of their debt, fund their facilities and have veto power of board selections.

How would you know? Player salaries aren't made public, the formula is secret as per standard AFL protocol.

• Instrumental in us getting Peter Jackson

Vlad made the call to Peter Jackson. That's it. That's all the "special assisstance" they gave us.

The former Board — our former Board — employed Peter Jackson; not the AFL.

Peter Jackson recruited, and Melbourne Football Club employed, Paul Roos; not the AFL.

Our Free Agency Compensation has been exactly the same as for every other Club that has received it (we got the same Compensation for Frawley as Hawthorn got for Franklin: a 1st round pick).

We were given a small donation and a moderate loan so that we could afford to cover certain non-deferrable costs, such as paying out Neeld. Any other Club in vaguely similar circumstances could reasonably have expected the level of financial relief we received.*

I hate hearing/reading "The AFL bailed out the MFC!". It robs the people who did save our Club of the credit they deserve.

 

*    The AFL's Financial Statement for that year indicated that a number of Clubs were given more overall assistance than we were (I can only remember Carlton, because it surprised me).

I feel bad for Brisbane as a club as well as it's fans and think they are in dire need of the pick. Although I doubt they'll get it and even if they do, that player sticking around would be a victory in itself . Their resurgence is dependant upon bringing in quality youngsters and securing top talent, and at this stage, they need all the help they can get.

The AFL will help them, somehow, whether it's visible or behind the scenes and in a few years when they have their academy picks and numerous early picks, they will become a good side, then we will start to complain how the AFL helped them and did nothing for us.

It's a cycle and look at us, who would have thought 3, 5 or 10 years ago we would have been as healthy as we are today.

Hanging onto youngsters ( referring to Brisbane F.C ) is going to be difficult if the side is crap,and those from interstate generally want to go home. Eventually those who go home may not end up getting game time,it is best to stay put and find a way of making their team (i.e Brisbane F.C ) successful.
