Moonshadow 17,678 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Gill speculating out loud what the AFL may offer Brisbane. Is it unreasonable for them to get a PP given we were knocked back a couple of years ago? http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/struggling-brisbane-lions-will-get-help-afl-ceo-gillon-mclachlan-20160809-gqo8mo.html
Adam The God 30,714 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 I hope PJ is first in line to knock this one on the head, given Brisbane did that to us.
george_on_the_outer 7,872 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 If they get the pick ahead of Essendrug, then it is a good thing. But like us, 1 player doesn't make the difference, it is a long process of astute selection, development and off field improvement that gets you there.
ArtificialWisdom 4,045 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 IMO the AFL wrongly rejected our claim, near a decade without finals (which has now passed) we were the perfect case. Now Brissy are in the same position no sence making the wrong choice again, give them a pick and hopefully they can actually keep the kid they pick up. Sick of seeing the same teams down the bottom, it's time for a change, its too easy to stay up near the top. Repeated failures such as ourselves and now brissy should be helped.
rjay 25,424 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 I think they need to have a look at the drafting/equalisation process before they start handing out PP's. First thing on the agenda EFC's no 1 pick this year... Come on Dill get real.
Demon Disciple 12,530 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 They need one, they shouldn't get it but they will. They kicked up a huge stink about us applying for one a few years back, so i hope we do the same. One pick ain't going to do anything for that club. They are in a worse state off-field than we ever were. Loved how Leppitch is having a sook about how they get nothing from the AFL (an academy and priority access comes to mind, Leppa) yet this club only 12 years ago played in their 4th consecutive GF. Short memories with that club up there. Their incompetence off-field is unbelievable (though their CEO has very little idea of running a football club imo), and their list manager is a complete dill (3-years @ $1.2m for a glorified outside runner, wow).
Diamond_Jim 12,772 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Brisbane are imploding both from a playing and financial viewpoint. The Gold Coast are still in transition and exist only because of AFL support. The problem with the priority pick is that it impacts most on the lowest clubs who miss out on the potential star at pick one or two. It does not impact the higher clubs as much as the difference between pick 15 and 16 is not as important as the difference between the lower picks. Not sure what to do to help Brisbane but it is time the upper clubs sweated. Just joking but how about a free pick of a player from the Premiers !!
McQueen 17,867 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 The AFL were wise enough to realise the issues at the MFC were far greater than what the benefit of a PP or two might offer a rebuilding club and installed PJ and Roos to right the ship. Our list was terrible but it's really only taken 3 years to turn it around. They've got their academies to supplement the list. Now they need some wise old heads to rectify the issues at their club.
Dante 2,739 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Like us they need(ed) a new coach and as others have stated above, a priority pick won't help, they have to make the club a more attractive destination and the only way they can do that is to get the right people in place at the top. Their supporter base has dropped off, their sponsors will probably be looking for an out clause and there's no Fitzroy to top them up this time. We did it by recruiting the right players and by trading draft picks for players and multiple top ten picks, Tyson/Salem for Kelly. If they think that one player will do it then they haven't learnt a thing. I feel for their supporters but at least they have the threepeat to look back on, we have nothing and when we wanted a priority they railed against it.
Ted Lasso 19,586 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Our record when we got knocked back was significantly worse than theirs, if they get given a priority pick i would expect PJ to ask for a please explain. Leppa's inability to coach shouldn't cost the rest of the comp.
Demon_JB 1,389 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 If they get one this year, at least we traded away our first round pick!
Nasher 33,651 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Am I the only one who just felt a big fat wave of indifference when reading this? I feel like I should care and I should be outraged after we were turned down whenever that was, but I just don't. If they haven't got the system to nurture and develop - and they clearly don't at present - one extra pick isn't going to make a lick of difference. It probably wouldn't have for us, either. Their club is a long, long way from being any sort of threat to anyone. I'm just glad this is all someone else's problem now.
Rossmillan 589 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 The AFL as a whole has a problem with how poor teams like Essendon and Brisbane have been. Its not just the number of games they have lost, its how uncompetitive they have been in doing so. Adelaide got a HUGE percentage boost that made a real difference to their finishing position on the ladder. Some teams got to play Brisbane twice this year, whilst others don't. I think because the AFL draw is so compromised, they have to do something to make these teams at least competitive relative to the rest of the competition.

My initial reaction: bloody hell, they wouldn't give us one (which still pisses me off). But I'm now swinging around to Artificial's viewpoint - the thing I hate most about footy is the constant domination by the same teams. Hawks make me want to throw up. Anything that helps the riff-raff gets my vote (not that I've got one) . I know it's only a small part of a rebuild, but every bit counts.
Fat Tony 5,337 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Brisbane should definitely be given a priority pick (and will be). While we should have also been given a priority pick two years ago, it wasn't possible given our tanking history. And so the AFL over compensated us when Frawley left. The current discretionary priority pick system is a shemozzle and the AFL needs to rejig the draft give the 10 non finalists two picks prior to the other teams.

If we were just a paltry as them this year then I don't think "indifferent" would be how you perceive the plight. Isn't it great to be wearing the shoe on the other foot for a change.

True, but I can't generate any sympathy for Essendon, Fremantle and Carlton. In fact quite the reverse. The AFL are the masters of the ends justifying the means. They see there's a problem with Essendon receiving pick 1, but actually taking it away is too hard for them so if the give Brisbane pick 1 as a priority then they come out with a duct-tape solution. Lock it in.
daisycutter 30,004 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 i wouldn't be too fussed if they got a pp, after all essendrugs will be gifted a #1 pick and first pick in every round and rookie draft but.....a pp doesn't have to be the #1 pick. it could be anywhere, so the afl (if inclined) have a lot of options i think the afl though will come up with some other type of help rather than a pp

What this screams DJ is that original decision to put a team on the Gold Coast was folly. QLD can only support one AFL team

I couldn't agree more. it does no one any good having one side as crap as the Lions are now. look what is happening in terms of their crapness shaping the finals. Clubs at the top who are desperate for percentage and are lucky enough to play them now when they are tired and have had enough (eg Crows on the weekend just gone) get a massive advantage over their rivals. That said as a mate has pointed out the lions were arguably the most strident and vocal opponent of us getting a priority pick
TeamPlayedFine39 8,525 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 I don't think Brisbane will be given a Priority Pick for the same reasons we were not. If memory serves correctly, one thing the commission considered was the potential in the playing list; with that in mind, when fully fit there is some elite talent in the Brisbane line-up, especially their midfield. The have drafted very good key position players at both ends of the ground and have a very good spread of young and underdeveloped talent. What they need is assistance in developing this talent in a strong, well funded and supported environment. That's where the AFL can, and should assist them. The way it's been worded by the commission in the past, I only think they'd give one if a player died.
Sir Why You Little 37,450 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Either Gold Coast or The Bears have to go no Sporting club survives on The GC anyway
Juicebox 633 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 Seeing what Brisbane are going through really does make you realise the progress we've made the past 3 years. Because my god, they are miles behind us.
T-34 409 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 If they get a PP good luck to them however it's not that long ago, in the scheme of things, that they were winning three flags in a row. I've been on this earth almost 52 years and have never seen my club win one flag let alone a hat trick of them. Leppa crying about how unjust the AFL has been rings hollow to me.
