Do the maths mate.

Let's say, generously, 1,000 members don't sign up specifically because of the NT deal (being VERY generous here). Average that out to $150 that's $150k.

The word is we're getting around $500-600k per game in the NT deal.

Pretty simple decision really.

In the short term but in the long term those shekels will allow us to be more competitive on a more regular basis than we otherwise would be. 10/11 flags won by clubs in the top quartile for FD spending according to The Guardian article on the Hawks linked in the other thread.

dr, there is no argument from me re the benefits to the club of money and better financial stability

i just regret we couldn't find a better way that didn't involve the loss of some on-field competitive advantage, just at the time when we need every win

Please, please, please can we make sure one of the games in PRIOR to the bye. Give the players from both teams a chance to recover.

Not exactly stoked about this decision, but money in the bank.

The money is meaningless. The AFL gives money to the Demons when we need it. The two extra losses per game (one up there and one the week after) are not worth it. Yes we won last week but that's been a rare occurrence.

Winning anywhere has been a rare occurrence. The money is not meaningless if we want to thrive not just survive.

This stupid NT experiment stops a lot of people signing up as members and will ensure the MFC dont play finals in 2017 and 2018.

Whatever money we make from Darwin, we could make from the extra members we would attract from not selling games to some place that we have zero connection to in the [censored] desert,  and the $$ we would get from winning more games and being a legitimate finals contender,

Peter Jackson has dropped the ball on this, and hes letting the members down badly.

NT is Jackson's folly. So much good work undone by this stupidity.

Sadly the NT is the only blip on PJ's tenure. We need to get the [censored] out of that deal at the end of the next agreement. Sacrificing 2 MCG games for those conditions, and the inevitable following week losses... I'm sick of it!

The only way the deal becomes remotely advantageous to us is if we ask the AFL to follow up our NT games with matches against teams we likely would've lost to anyway, like Hawthorn or Sydney. Instead we sacrificed a perfectly winnable game to the Saints.

We have lost 96% of our last 25 games at Etihad.

Exactly.  And the team we beat there plays there about as often as we do.

I once started a thread called the "Darwin Effect", or something like that, so I've had my fair share of misgivings.

I'm still not sold on it as a location to be selling games, but so long as we are behind the 8 ball on football department spending and we need quick cash, it's going to keep happening.

I'd prefer to reduce it to one game, in Alice Springs, against rotating opposition, but the harsh reality is that a better side doesn't drop every single game at Etihad, every single game against St Kilda, or every single game after an interstate trip.

I know we need the dosh because we are skint but for goodness sake after having to play a high energy sapping game near the equator one week and then back up the next week  even though today we played in a big shed , we should insist on a bye after a Darwin sweat fest ! We were never going to win today , witness the predictable sluggish performances from far too many players...

Peter Jackson just announced that we will be playing 2 Home Games a Year for the next two years (2017 & 2018).

Yeah well that, plus the shiitihad fiasco effectively cook any improvement or momentum we should gain! One of Jacksons "Rare" Faux Pax!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
