Along with a Key Defender to help T-Mac, the foward/ruck position is one that needs serious addressing at this club.

Vardy would be cheap and an excellent option to help out fwd line and give Gawny a chop-out. Injury history, yes, but worth the punt.

Spencer is not the option and is only required if Gawn was to get injured again. Dawes is done. Pedo I'm happy with but doesn't seem to get a look in, and our young talls are unknown or just forwards.

Why waste a spot on our list on a bloke who is injured all the time?

Not worth it at all. We need players who are ready to go, not blokes who struggle to get on the park.

Yep Dawes, big guy who can't play football, that's what we need.

If and its a big if he passed all the medical testing I would entertain Vardy. Showed early doors pre hip and knee injuries that he could play. Would fill the presently vacant fwd/ruck roll and create some major headaches for opposition defenders. Furthermore I don't think he would cost a lot.

imagine:

Watts   Hogan  Petracca

Kent     Vardy   Garlett

Is struggling at VFL level big time.

I live in Geelong and have watched him on numerous occasions this season...wouldn't exactly say he's struggling - can't get a run in the seniors behind Smith, Stanley, Blicavs and Hawkins

Replace Vardy with Weideman and get even more excited

And with Mitch coming back for the cats it looks like move on time for him..

Massive talent...can he do a Gawn and get back on the park consistently.

If we got him and he could offer the type of year we got from Peter Vardy in 2002, then I'm up for another Vardy?

25yo,  25 games.  avg disposals 8.3  avg score 1.36  avg marks 2.76  average tackles 2.1  avg hitouts 11.48

doesn't exactly set the world on fire

big men should never be judged on disposals. hitting scoreboard and providing ruck relief in this case, yes. missed pre-season so stats dont look great but serving a role for MFC next year if fit could be worth the punt. Look at Gawn

wouldn't cost a lot to bring him in you wouldn't have thought, either trade-wise or contract size.

we could have him sitting in our medical room for a prolonged period of time or we could have him create an immediate impact as a third tall / ruck - something we're desperately in need of having alongside hogan and watts, even if the latter has done far better than expected as a spare parts ruckman.

could see a role as depth. wouldn't expect to be a starting 22. speculative, ok if cheap

Agree, WYL. We already have Spencer on the list, don't need another sub-afl ruckman taking up another spot.

The days of taking Reject Project Players just in case they make it have to be gone.

Spencer has yet to prove himself as a forward option in an AFL game - closest thing was game down at Cattery last year. Vardy has proven on mulitple occasions of playing at AFL level in both positions.  He (Vardy) has now played 6 or 7 games in a row in the VFL starting to get continuity into his body and is younger and better than Spencer. If it was for a third or fourth round draft pick i'd be jumping at it. Our ruck stocks are EXTREMELY low, and having spoken to someone at the club I know that we will be going after a back-up ruckman/fwd player to help provide a chop-out for Gawn. As usual on DL, I will get hosed down for what this conversation entailed, but there were no mentions of players - just that we needed a "Tippett" fwd/pinch ruck player; Vardy is one that screams this to me that could come cheap.

I remember watching him play in the seniors a couple years ago and he looked very dangerous as a forward option. Saying that, reviews of his performances this season seem to show that he is way off the mark at the moment.

If he regains some touch by the end of the year then he may not be the worst option. Wouldn't give him any more than a spot on the rookie list though.

Couldn't agree more, Vickery is another. Tippet would be perfect but players like that don't grow on trees.

I think we need a foward who can ruck. Dawes can't/won't and Watts is being serviceable but not the answer. Either Huttlet or go shopping

Interesting call Wiseblood, especially since he has now played almost the entire season at VFL level and appears over his chronic injury.

Would you be so cruel about Jack Trengove - who is in virtually the same boat and plays in a position where he has more options to get a game than a forward/ruckman.

I would also have thought that taking a punt on a forward who can ruck is a very likely draft scenario next year - especially given we are likely to say goodbye to Pedo, King and maybe Dawes at season's end.

Sure we may all want to rush the Weed along, but as yet he has not shown enough at VFL level.

Apart from Vardy, Vickery, Tomlinson and Daw would also potentially fill the forward/ruck spot that we need to find - so it's pleasing that a few names are starting to crop up as being forced to be on the move because we certainly have struggled in the past to get the most-sought after option - Hale was a classic example.

    TRAINING: Monday 20th January 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator attended training out at Casey Fields to bring you the following observations from Preseason Training. GATOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS There were 5 in the main rehab group, namely Gawn, Petracca, Fullarton, Woewodin and Lever.  Laurie was running laps by himself, as was Jefferson.  Chandler, as has been reported, had his arm in a sling.  Lindsay did a bit of lap running later on. Some of the ''rehab 5'' participated in non contact drills and b

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session.
