C : STRETCH TYSON VINCE

HF : PETRACCA WATTS KENT

F : GARLETT HOGAN KENNEDY

R : GAWN VINEY JONES

BENCH : ANB SALEM THE PRINCE PEDO

OUT : GARLAND OSCAR NEWTON MICHIE OLIVER (if doesn't get up)

IN : FROST PEDO JETTA SALEM

THE PRINCE (if good to go)

We need to be pro active and not reactive. We have coming up

Port - Dixon, The Hoff

Hawks - Sicily, Obrien

Pies - Moore, Cox

Swans - Tippet, Buddy

Crows - Texan, Jenkins

Dockers - F##k knows

Saints - Bruce, Roo,

Eagles - Kennedy, Darling

Suns - Wright, Lynch

Lets get Frost in the side down back and settled in, the sooner the better. Some players are stiff to miss but it's only going to get harder with Brayshaw, VB and Trengove coming back at various stages.

What has Garland done to you BA?

I think he was our best or close to it backman yesterday and you want him out.

Cannot have it Garland IN for me not even a decision to make.

Some will sight I have a vendetta against Grimes/Garland....we've leave that there.

OD it's about being proactive and not reactive, whilst he did some good things yesterday we need to look at his year to date, he's had some bad games, and without going down the "he's not alone" path we are coming up against some teams that have some really tall timber up forward. Winnable games as long as we have our selections/structures right. For me Frost needs to come in straight away, and before anyone argues against his or McDonalds disposal that's why we surround them will good users/decision makers.

Another Anti Garland

Not sure what more he could have done yesterday.

Either Gawn or Spencer I think.

Rest Gawn we have a tough month after this coming weekend.

We need him fresh.

On the same token who misses out when everyone's fit (if there's such a thing)??

Angus?

VB?

Trengove?

The Prince?

Hard decisions need to be made all round.

It's not about 1 game OD, it's about his season to date, his career as a whole and the team as a whole moving forward.

Jetta back just in time to destroy Wingard like he always does.

Wingard is a seagull. Just hovers around the contest waiting for the ball to spill out.

Max looks totally cooked.  Went for just about every marking contest with one hand just trying to get a break even.  He needs to be rested IMO - Jake in.

We brought in Newton, a small, for Pedo and I think our fwd set-up was too small as a result.  Either Pedo or Dawes in this week for a small.

For mine: -

Outs: Michie, Newton, Gawn, Wagner.

Ins: Jetta, Tyson, Pederson, Grimes.

I'd be spending 24/7 on Oliver's thigh so he gets up. He's worth his weight in gold in the middle with first touches and clearances. We'll need to be good in tight against Wines, Boak and co. so I'm hoping he will make the trip to the Alice. I'm thinking with Port's lack of tap ruckmen, we'll go mobile with Pederson against Trengove and co.- third man ups - re-charge Gawn's batteries who looked sluggish, for a big 3 week stint in 3 big games before another weeks break. Grimes or Trengove in for Wagner. Went with Grimes who has been close for a while.

Getting harder and harder at selection. Usually wouldn't make 4 selections after a 63 point win, but I think when Roos signalled 3/4 changes I think reality was that two had to come back in (Jetta/Tyson) and another two probably looked like they needed a rest. It wouldn't suprise me if there were another change with many options. It's a big game 9th v 10th in the scheme of things for both teams seeking a place in the 8. A chance to open up a two game gap over Port.

In: Pedo, Trengove, Jetta, Tyson

Out: Oliver, Michie, OMac, Hunt

Newton and ANB should stay in to give them a couple of games to show us what they've got, on that basis Michie goes out, I don't think he's been horrible but I don't think he's done enough to hold a spot when we have players racking up 30 possies each week. Oliver has a corkie and I'd rather get him 100% for Hawthorn, same with Hunt, I'd like to get him rested and use his speed to exploit Hawthorn.

You are correct - sorry.  Got confused with outs for illness.  Still think we were a tall short up forward.

jetta and tyson are the obvious ins.

lumumba, dawes, dunn, and spencer would be other chances you'd expect.

I would add Trengove and Grimes to add to our experience base. Some of the kids are getting very tired.

SEN reporting Robbie Gray will be at least fined for tripping, his 3rd fine which equals automatic suspension. Massive bonus for us

Obviously if Gray is gone for the week that would be handy for us. I know little of Tom Jonas though. Anyone with more knowledge than me know how he's playing of late and if he would be a big out for them?

Outs for Port: Gray, Jonas and Byrne-Jones.

Hartlett looked really proppy thanks to a shoulder injury and a corkie so he's another who might not get up for Saturday which would be huge for us.

Boak will be sore if anyone witnessed Hurn's bump to his ribs, I expect Viney or Jones to test them out if that's the case because I reckon he'll play.

All-in-all, it's not ideal for them and our midfield must capitalize on what will be a weaker midfield for Port.

As far as what our side looks like, I would entertain the following:

Purely for match-ups and to worry Port, I'd have Spencer rucking the majority of the first half with Gawn playing deep forward. Port have a pretty small back-line and if we were to go with a forward-line of Gawn, Hogan at CHF and Watts it would mean Port would have to send Trengove back (who has been their make-shift ruckman) and Westhoff into the ruck with Dixon their only permanent KF which would take the pressure off our defenders.

Port have no ruck-man and whilst Spencer is short of a gallop, I think with injuries to Hartlett and Boak and the imminent suspension of Gray, we need to be aggressive and try to stretch Port's talls. It means our mids will have to fire on the weekend and win the contested count significantly. But I think it could work.

Would also allow Gawn a bit of a rest without having to leave him out of the side. He is so important to us when he's on top.

It's a risky move, but Gawn is too important to leave out and I worry about our backline having to deal with Dixon and Westhoff playing forward if we don't dictate this sort of move.

Am I crazy?

Other players who I imagine will come in are Jetta, Salem, Dunn and possibly Tyson. Trengove and Grimes also surely in the frame?

Michie, O-Mac, Newton as possible outs.

Not necessarily anti Garland,  Jetta must come back in, Port have some tall strong forwards, Garland does not play tall, so Frost comes in.

Better to rest Gawn if he needs it than to play two rucks IMO.

I'm not so sure.

Spencer wouldn't be able to ruck the whole game on his own, especially in the humidity of Darwin. He has only played a couple of games in the VFL.

This would be strictly a strategic move based on the potential outs for Port and the fact that they're playing their best KP defender as a make-shift ruckman.

Spencer is pretty useless around the ground but if Gawn and him play a 50/50 split of ruck/forward time then it'd make it awkward for Port to match-up on them when forward. Spencer less so but Gawn would be a huge concern for them if he played half the game forward.

Especially if our mids get on top which they should.

I would play Gawn mainly forward and Spencer can do most of the rucking. Play Hogan higher up the ground. Our midfielders are stronger than the group of Pedo Frost and Dawes.

Ports game is built on their rebound from half back...stop that and you stop them. Pressure from our forwards is crucial this week.

Jonas will be a big out for them but I still wouldn't want to go in too tall in our forward line.

To my mind it would be a bad move to carry 2 rucks in this game but then again it might be the once in a blue moon game...I doubt it though.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
