Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

You can't see us "experimenting" with the in-form and ready Trengove, yet you want to bring the underdone Spencer in?

No Jetta? No Pedersen?

Forgot Jetta was out lol.

Swapping Spencil for Gawn as Gawn looks like he is in much need of a freshen up to take us into a solid second half of the season and get him back to his best around the ground. His around the ground work, outside of taps to our advantage which is always a fair way above the likes of Spencil, indicated he is well down on his best and may well be carrying a stack of bruising/general soreness. One week is not going to hurt and the Ruck role can be covered if Spencil works his butt off with assistance from Dawes and 3rd ups. A full game and a half (or so) at Casey should see Spencil reasonably match fit. Not ideal but as i said, if Dawes is in we can rest Spencil up forward also. Spencil can take the odd mark and goal there also. Haven't seen much of that from Gawn last few weeks.

Dawes in is a better ruck relief / forward option than Pedo for "this week" IF Gawn is rested. Dawes has shown solid form at Casey last 2 weeks and IMO is a slightly better tall forward option for us that we have been crying out for.

Having said all that i don't think the match committee will risk resting Big M this week lol. So yes Pedo could also get a guernsey. Pedo has an advantage over Dawes in that he can play a role down back or up forward (or both). But Dawes is more handy in the ruck IMO (just marginally) and is a slightly better forward (again marginally) than Pedo.

We could play both also with Pedo in for OMac but that would make it 5 changes.

4 would seem the max so the most likely for me would be

- Tyson for Viv

- Pedo for Omac (if fit)

- Dawes for ANB as i think our mid rotations are covered with the inclusion of Tyson; and

- Jetta for Wagner

I hear ya about Gawn, could go a rest, but just not sure the timing is right.

I wouldn't be bringing in Spencer and Dawes in at the same time. Both only have a few games under the belt, it's a risky option. Aside from that, Pedo has shown to be the best backup ruck out of the "rotating 3" (Dawes, Pedo, Frost). I'm no Pedersen fan, that's well known, but his ruck work this year has improved a lot and he is BY FAR the best backup ruck we have out of those 3 forwards.

ANB was fine and won't be dropped after 1 game given his form coming in.

Also think we'll see a few out of Hunt, Wagner, Oliver and Harmes given the week off so they come in fresh next week, Roos has hinted at such a philosophy this week too.

Giving Gawn a rest would be a HUGE mistake. Just because Port have Jackson Trengove rucking for them, doesn't mean we can afford to play Spencer. We need to capitalize on their weakness which is their midfield. The games we have played against the top teams Gawn has had an influence one way or another. We were the leading team in the AFL in clearances for a reason.

We play that diamond defense, were we afford to lose a defender and get more numbers around the ball and stoppages to win a midfield battle. With Gawn rucking against Port, this will allow our structure and game plan to work so much more effectively if he is dominating the hit outs and feeding our midfielders.

I'm confused by the suggestions of ANB being dropped. He wasn't just okay on the weekend. He was very good.

He wasn't horrid P but i with Tracc now in and if Tyson returns i just can't see room for both him and Viv in the team given they were the least effective of our inside mids (or inisde/outside if you wish to place ANB in that category). We have enough effective inside mids if Tyson returns IMO and Mr. Vince plays a little more time in there which i think is necessary for us if we are to to win on the weekend. I like Bernie down back but if Pedo/Jetta return i reckon this frees up our options for Bernie to push into the middle a little more and even drift up forward more often where i feel he is more dangerous. He also offers the potential of goals from around 50 or just outside. This places pressure on the opposition to push up a little when he is about providing more room inside 50/out back for others to run into. More options to goal should result in more goals.

Rumour on the Melbourne Football Club Supporters Page on FB that says Salem is done for the rest of the year due to a thyroid issue that has affected him before. Anyone has any word on this? Sorry if it has been discussed on another thread, I haven't come across it

Agree and suspect it will be hunt as he is younger.  They will have learnt a lesson from the saints game and will bring fresh players in. Straight swap for jetta.

I think they will look to bring in some older hardened players. Perfect time to utilise our depth and give players a rest. So Grimes a chance, maybe dawes  and perhaps even trenners. For this reason i think Newtown is safe.

Any players with any niggles should not be picked  and for this reason i think they'll  rest oliver, viney and maybe even gawn.

I do wonder if they pick a squad with this week and next in mind. So emergencies will give a pointer to tge hawks game

All that said roos doesnt like making too many changes

Jesus, last time we did this sort of "list management", it cost us $500k.

Might as well bring Spencer in to play on Wingard and be done with it.

Just reckon this game is a good time to rest Hunt and Wagner, and Michie just hasn't done enough to stay in IMO.

That removes all their pace

Newton was the last minute change for Tyson. So if Tyson returns, I don't see why it would be ANB getting the chop instead of Newton. I thought ANB had the better game of the two.

From what Roos said, the need for rest will be a major consideration this week with the 6 day turnaround and the trip to Alice. ANB is fresh, relatively speaking. More likely candidates for mine are Wagner, Hunt and Michie..

Pace isn't everything and both those kids will benefit from the rest and be cherry ripe the week after when their speed will be more needed than this week IMO.

I've said it before and its likely i'll have cause to say it again. Roos almost never brings debut or young players in for only one game, even if they had poor games . No chance at all that ANB will be dropped.

Newton may well be the exception to that rule as he was a late call up to cover the loss of tyson and so will be expecting to go back to the twos (and the club would have prepared him for that possibility. That said i think there is a good chance he'll be selected again.

It was discussed in another thread, but the thyroid issue has flared up again as you mentioned, but they are uncertain as to how long he will miss.  It could be 4 weeks, it could be 6 months.  I think the club are just waiting on more information before they go ahead with any treatment.

Just think he set up a few more goals and was involved in more scoring chains than ANB. ANB did set up a nice goal in the 2nd quarter at one point. Newton appears to run a little harder both ways for mine although that's just a gut feel based on what i saw. No concrete evidence and could be way off.

Was on the end for a nice running goal also in the 3rd i think. Not leaps ahead but i would still have him in over ANB at this point.

As i said earlier it would be Tyson for Viv anyways and Jetta for Wagner most likely so a few of those you mentioned may well be changed out for this week.

IF Tyson/Jetta are back i think we are covered through the mid (Vince to play more through there with Jetta back) and this leaves ANB as the likely out for Dawes/Pedo to come in as the 3rd tall forward for me. We might also see Pedo for Omac.

No doubt the match committee will see it completely diff though. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing as they say and as an armchair expert i'm just speculating based on what i'm observing and for fun. It's interesting to see eveyone's views on here.

Why would anyone leave out Gawn?   Ok, in the last few weeks he had quieter games than we are used to in 2016.  6 year players don't need 'resting'.

And as Roos said the coaches have emphasised to Max that he only need to meet their expectations (which coaches are very happy with) rather than external expectations.  Max can't be among the vote getters every week but that doesn't mean he isn't doing his job!  And maybe he is trying to do too much to be among 'the best ruckman in the league'.

Play him for less minutes and let Pedersen and Watts pick up the time.  Max can rest forward.  But please, unless he is injured Max should play.

I don't think anyone is calling for Gawn to be dropped on form or is even questioning if he is the #1 ruck.

It does make sense to give him a rest this week as he doesn't look to have recovered from the Bulldogs game, he looked very tired on Sunday and with a 6 day break and travel to Alice Springs against Jackson Trengove, it might not be the worst time to rest the big fella

I didn't say anything about Gawn being dropped or not being #1 ruck...quite the opposite!!.  I said a 6 year player doesn't need 'resting' from a game, rest him up forward if necessary, and if not injured he should play.

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
