We can't pay Hurley what he would like and expect to keep our team together. I almost think it's too late for any big name players to join us on big coin. O'Meara, Prestia, even Brown from Collingwood would probably be too expensive. There will be too many demands by our players as they start to get highly rated within the comp already. Gawn and Viney will become top 50 players this year and in two years time we will probably have 6 - 8 in there.

We need to find a player like Hombsh or a young Ted Richards. Cheap and under the radar when they come across but have always been good value to their clubs.

Backman, utility, wing, inside mid/fwd/back, inside mid/fwd.

Bugg and Harmes were our starting wingmen on the weekend - good players, but probably not the speed and skill of the games elite outside runners. Petracca, Kent and Kennedy the half forwards. Stretch a bit of both, he's probably the only pure wingman on our list.

Brayshaw and Vanders are two who could come in to that forward/midfield mix to keep the pressure on for spots. Matt Jones was playing solid footy from a wing before injury. But I'd like to have another pure running and skillful winger to push the competition.

I know he's settled well as a deep tall forward but I'd still be rotating Watts through the wing every now and then just to keep his positional versatility and to see if he can get some cheap touches to be damaging running from half back.

Viney and Gawn are signed up aren't they? Jones and Vince are. Tommy Mc, Watts and Hogan are the big resignings this year and getting Jetta's name on paper. Maybe Tyson as well.

But if we haven't overcommitted to Dunn and Garland and the likes of Grimes, Dawes and Trengove can be paid (or not) based on output then there should be plenty to go around.

The Dogs have more quality senior players than we do, have had to pay the likes of Stringer and Bont who are reaching the top level of talent and still fit Boyd's contract in. I think there's a window for a star recruit now before the likes of Brayshaw, Petracca, Oliver can demand mega deals, which assumes they will get in that position.

I'd like to think $650k would still get the job done for Dion. A five year deal.

Hurley would be lovely, but he's certainly not a flawless player. His kicking is better than Tommy's, but he's still known to have a brain fade or two. I wouldn't go higher than a front ended $800k deal over five years.

What about having a go at weitering and the end of next year pretty sure he was a dees supporter growing up would be a 1st rounder and a player tho and carlton won't let him go unless he requests a trade

Quite possibly the dominant KPD over the coming decade. The bluebaggers would want an arm and a leg for him though.

Is daniel merrett a chance?

196 plenty of hard at it tough stuff can play fwd and is probably contracted for 10 and wedded to the lions presidents daughter?!

Might be a good fit

Our window opens while brisbanes is stuck

He is 31 so its not a long term plan

What about a bloke we already have on the list - tallish big strong body, runs all day premiership CHF... C Dawes. If the Weed comes on, Dawes only hope would be to retrain his mindset and become a gorilla minder - should his body hold up

I didn't think Saad did too badly on Sunday despite our high score. I suspect that he would rather be playing for us rather than against us next time we meet.

An arm, a leg, a palace, a tropical island, and for us to tank every time we play them and even then they probably wouldnt want to give him up.

What are people's thoughts on Lachie Hansen from norf?

Cant get a game for them and could be a good fit at a cheapish price

Wouldn't be against him, but North are a pain to trade with.

At least Nathan & Mitch Brown are both free agents.

Keep an eye out for Caleb Marchbank. Know the family and see the old lady walk past work on her daily morning walks and chat to her every now and then.

He is homesick atm and he is no rush at all to re sign with the Giants.

Get Dom and the Bugg onto it.

Not a bad suggestion there deeflog. He is certainly on the outside looking in right now at Norf. He has good attributes and is able to play on the really big forwards too.

As proposed by the roar wep page for melb

And the list still has some holes. Another key defender should be at the top of the list if one good enough to be worth trading for becomes available. How much would someone like Michael Hurley add to this side? It would be worth chasing Steven May or Rory Thompson from the Suns. Snare one of those, and come September 2017 you have a team that could not just play finals, but win them.

Putting a list together and keeping it together, paying them the right amount to keep them happy and in balance with one another so players don't get their noses out of joint, then adding the right player at the right time is not an easy science. History is littered with many sides who thought they were "in the premiership window" got in a high priced recruit to take them to premiership glory, then failed miserably, suffered for years and then had to rebuild again.

Having said that Buddy may still work at the Swans, Scully has come good for the talent laden Giants and as you say Boyd hasn't yet ruined the Bulldogs prospects.

It has been argued the Tigers have "sat on their hands too long" during trade week and haven't added talent to their list at a time when they needed to. Dal Santo, Higgins and especially Waite have been fantastic for North to the point where they could pinch a premiership they could never have achieved without those additions. But they have an amazing number of 30 plus players in their squad and it's a fine line between a list master genius at North and a bloke looking for a new job.

I think our guys are doing a good job, so I trust them and pray they get it right coz I reckon' you need a lot of luck and there's a fine line between genius and dud. And for those of us who reckon we have to get this player or that player and spend this amount on them, with respect I think they might just think it's easier than it actually is.

Just one from left field...

Anyone think T. Cloke could be moulded into a full back/CHB, big, strong reasonably quick.

Not a bad field kick.

29 years old though.

Because, like Bugg, he played for GWS.

It's a long bow to draw though.

Yeah but hes never met Caleb?

Agree though if i was wanting to get Marchbank it would be to play forward. Watched him play few games at Murray Bushrangers up forward and he reminded me of Jarred Waite.

Absolute Gun.

A bit too left field I think.

If I were the Pies I'd try him back there, but I'm not sure he has the agility and it's unlikely he has the desire to learn a new position at his age.

There were a number of Demonland Trackwatchers at Gosch's Paddock this morning to bring you their observations from Preseason Training. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti
