Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Who is likely to move into Goodwin's seat at years end?

And btw Alistair Lynch has been at a couple of training sessions doing part time work with our forwards and defenders.

This might be why Browny appears to have a bit of a soft spot with us?

I still fancy Basset. Does anyone know what his relationship is like with Goody?

Self-quote alert.

I went along for a fantastic historical tour of the Norwood Football Club today (hosted by Roger Woodcock). One of the things to emerge was Nathan Basset's drive and determination as a proud club-man and his efforts to connect the players with the club's strong history (not in a Schwab way), by lining the rooms with portraits of club champions etc.

Have no idea how he's found himself in enemy territory over at Alberton.

I think in this instance we should promote from within and move Plapp (Casey) into Goodwin's role, leaving McCartney where he is and sourcing a top candidate for Casey. This would be very seamless as regards 'game plan' and each senior coach  would be familiar working with (and getting the best out of) our playing list. With the money saved from Roos salary, everybody involved could be paid a fair increase and there may even be something left in the kitty to find an appropriate role for Roos.

WTF?

Aside from disagreeing with your 2nd sentence it doesn't make sense. If he was a smart footballer then he would know what to do and play that way. If he had coaching desires he would be an on-field coach. He's in the leadership group but was dropped. Why do you think that was? And why do you think he would walk into a coaching role at the club?

I am flummoxed by your post.

I just don't think we are the position to judge and looks can be deceiving.

Cameron Bruce gave good service to our club but it can't be denied that in the back end  of his career he did try to kill some of his teammates with his disposal and decision making. He had a fairly obvious fall out with the club but is now a highly respected assistant coach at Hawthorn.

I think we sometimes look too narrowly at personalities  that will make good coaching material ( passionate, focused, driven) but from the outside we just don't know. I certainly would not have seen Bruce or Yze as potential coaches in the same way that I don't see it in Garland either.  But who the hell knows ?

As a rule, first year coaches tend to surround themselves with acquaintances they know and like - Clarko did it (former teammates at the Dees in Bruce and Yze), Roos has done it (former staff and players, such as Fruity Allison, tried to bring in Dew), Scott (Lappin etc) before they expand their circle of influence to a greater and lesser effect (Lyon this year, bringing in Hawks for their Intel).

Whilst Goodwin is an unusual circumstance coming in as a apprentice - more akin to Longmire than Bucks, hopefully - I think it's reasonable to expect that he'll want fresh eyes to come in next year.

Look to names at Crows and Bombers that he's played / worked with.

Bassett is a logical call as such.

True.

Chris Scott brought in Lappin, Caracella, O'Bree and Troy Selwood.
Clarko also brought over Fagan and Neitz.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Ben Hart at the dees, and would welcome him.
Maybe Bickley? Tyson Edwards? Even a Rutten.

Clarko would've played with Yze for only 2 years and not at all with Bruce. Neitz he would've known better.

I think he's either hired former players for:

1. Coincedence

2. The were the best applicants - Bruce an internal hire, Neitz a part time tall defender coach with links to Frawley, Yze a marvellous kick

3. To stick it up the Dees - his Hawks have always save a little extra for us.

Goodwin has Macca as his right hand man. Ben Matthews or Rawlings might earn the designation of senior assistant and probably stay in their roles as midfield and backline coaches respectively. Craig Jennings has worked with Goodwin and Macca and you'd think would stay in his strategy role. Allison in development. Shannon Byrnes, Andrew Nicholls, Michelle Cowan do their development stuff as well.

I think Goodwin has been coaching the forwards this year whilst Daniel McPherson has been shuffled back to some kind of development/ball movement coach across the team and at Casey. It would be logical for McPherson to take over the forwards again.

If that was the case then we'd be looking at adding in a new development coach (or coaches) to work their way up. I don't mind the idea of starting off a few high quality former ex players in that role, to add a bit of confidence and winning belief to the group. A good former player who's williing to start at the bottom and work their way up is the right kind of cultural fit I think.

If there's a reason that Rawlings or Matthews go or McPherson isn't preferred to coach the forwards again then I'd be looking to bring in a quality assistant from a top club in need of a new challenge, but if not keeping a core group of coaches together for Goodwin's first year isn't a bad idea.

Finding that balance between continuity and turnover is probably a difficult task for coaches. They need fresh voices and ideas but you don't want to be losing good people you work well with.

I reckon Brett would hardly know a soul at the club these days. In the 10 (?) years since he was there the place has changed beyond recognition.

But is that necessarily bad - and I am sure though he hasn't been at the club, the AFL is still a fairly incestuous group and he will know exactly what is going on at the Dees.

I'd like to see Plapp join our coaching panel in some capacity (other than Casey coach). He's been very impressive.

He already is effectively. He works for Melbourne not Casey as I understand it.

I would love to get one more really high profile assistant coaches to compliment Goody and Macca. I was always given the impression that Roos assistant were brought in because they already knew his style and due to the time-frame. Not too sure whether they were necessarily the best for the job. Would like to see someone quality from outside the club come in- preference would be from a successful club/culture. Not too sure who that would be..

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
