It was awesome, you missed out. Me and 2 others got to spend 15-20 mins with prior just shooting the breeze. It was like fast money on sale of the century...

- Spencer is only a week away. But depth is a worry in the Ruck. King needs to put 20kg's on, they aim for 7 per year
- Neeld physiologically damaged the players, particularly Watts. He needs to be constantly reassured, high 5's etc
- Roo's going to Hawaii for 6 months and undecided after that. Most likely not coming back in a footy role
- club went very hard after Brendan McCarthy. Goody rates him as the best in the country at what he does
- Truck is arrogant, but in a good way. He thought he should have been playing since round 1. Goody said he's way to good for the VFL. He said he's like a panther out there. Said he plays like a mixture of Stringer up forward and Ebert through the middle. He'll play forward and kick goals this year. If he could choose only one of Hoges and Truck, he'd pick Hoges but only cause he hasn't seen Truck at AFL level yet. That said he did almost smirk and giggle when he said Hoges is very very good.
- explained the Essendon game well. He said "all club have [censored] days at the office", especially inexperienced ones like ours. he said the difference between us and Geelong who were in the same position as us against the bombers last weekend was that their senior players know how to grit their teeth and wait, and more importantly trust that momentum will shift and when it does take you take your chances and bury the oppo. We hit the lead at the 10min mark of the last. He said he expected us to kick 2-3 more and kill the game, we got over excited and blew it, the cats didn't. That's were the 80 games comes into it
- they internally really rate Wagner and Hunt. He kept saying we found one on the weekend when referring to Hunt
- Had some interesting things to say on his time at Essendon and more so how removed Hirdy is now. But that's not relevant.

Ask what you like, we talked about pretty much everything.

Andy Mac on bigfooty had a lunch function this week with special guest Simon Goodwin.

He has written a heap of info in this bigfooty thread. Page 4 post 99 is where it starts and continues over the next few pages.

https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/26-sam-weideman.1118179/page-4

I would copy and paste all the relevant info but am on my phone and there are a lot of posts.

"Sam is apparently unlikely to play this year as he needs another 7kg's. The club is very happy with his 3 X VFL games thus far. Kicking 3 in each match at this stage of his development and training load.

The club has him penciled in as one of 13 future players on the list that will be rated elite at the 80 game mark."

Intriguing. I wonder if I could name them?

Hogan, Oliver, Brayshaw, Viney, Petracca, Weideman, Tyson, Salem, Gawn, O McDonald, T McDonald (even though he's past 80 games)... after these guys, I'm not really sure. Stretch? Kent?

Presumably Max, not Mitch? (though was this before Mitch went down?) Max possibly needs to instal a 'tank', too? Also some venom. Per discussion/posts elsewhere his seems to be more a Daniher role than a Maxy G backup?

Probably need to define what elite means first....everyone seems to have a differnet view of what it means.

From reading more of that BF thread, I'd say you're on the money, mate, except replace Vanders with Viney.

Although, Kennedy is an interesting one. Maybe they rate Kennedy higher than Wanger or Omac? We certainly know that Taylor rates Kennedy pretty highly.

Sounds like the club is in great hands going forward and Goodie is really enjoying his time and working with the young players!

lol at mentions on OMac being elite after 80 games. Just cos he's related to TMac doesn't mean he'll be there. DOn't get me wrong, I'm fond of the kid, but there's nothing in his footy so far to suggest he'll be elite after 80. For mine it's the obvious ones, Hogan, Salem, Petracca, Brayshaw, Gawn, Oliver, Weideman... I see 7/8 so far.

Viney is the 8th, is probably already there now, will be captain, and I think will confuse people, because nothing about him is elite. Not size, pace or disposal. The elite thing is his production. I don't see him getting worse as a player than what we've seen this year, until he declines in his old age. We'll see 8 years now of footy basically like this, or close to it more often than not. Sam Mitchell style. That's Elite to me.

Jetta - Probably just off elite. Opposition clubs will respect him, but he doesn't scare anyone.

Harmes - All I can say about him is ???. Sometimes he looks VFL. Sometimes he looks like Stevie J in red and blue. The times he vanishes are starting to evaporate, and he's now looking dangerous more and more often. Could potentially get to elite, but I feel like only in late twenties, and only for a few years.

Kennedy - I don't agree with everyone on him. Don't get me wrong, love his work, will be awesome. But we're seeing his ceiling now. He's tiny and zippy, but rather more outside than the Oliver/Viney/Jones types... I think of him as a poor man's Prestia. He will excel more than anyone (outside of Watts) in the hard-ball winning demons. Zippy outside players will want to come to demons over the next 3-5 years, you watch. We will make them All Australians.

VDB - Not elite. Very good. Not elite. I reckon he'll settle more as a leading forward who pressures, like Mayne. So his kicking will end up restricting him from the elite conversation. Love him, and will represent well for 150 games at least.

Trengove - Who the hell knows. If he gets any sort of pace back, there's no reason he can't be. Has basically no faults in his game aside from the pace problem. I'm hoping he can become our Simon Black, in which case, Elite certainly... But I prefer to have no expectation with him. In all honesty I think as Vince and Jones age, they'll be hoping he can step in.

Tyson - Disposal the only thing holding him back from Elite. Right on the cusp, but not there yet. He's on 54 games and is only 22. Will he improve? I'm thinking we're seeing near to his best already, and it's pretty damn good. But a top 40 player in the league? I'm thinking no. Still hugely important though.

TMac - I couldn't decide on him. He's only 23 and is key position. Has already played his 80+ games. I think in the end of his career he'll be so wily, as he is already, and his disposal won't improve, but his decision making will. I would say that no, he won't be elite... but KP defenders rarely get the press. He'll be in the top handful of his position his whole career, but will never take the Rance/Gibson/Hurley? mantle.

Gee it's fun being able to read about the list with high hopes again. I said it at the end of the year, this will be one of the most fondly remembered seasons of my life. When we all had zero expectations, but still won our fair share.

I don't post on bigfooty, but head over there every so often. The main page conversations always deteriorate quickly, but the Melbourne board is pretty good. There isn't the constant fighting and clash if opinions like there is here which is nice.

I read a thread on there once about demonland and many of them had started posting here but got shotdown. RhinoRichards name was mentioned alot.

Harmes is an interesting one.

I see him as a player that flies under the radar a little bit, but one that has attributes that might see him become better than decent.

Very good hands, strong bodied, hard, and shows the ability to make good decisions quickly and execute.  Now he doesn't do all of these things all of the time, the fact that he has shown that he can do them sometimes indicates that his ceiling may be higher than some.

Harmesy is the real deal, He has some very strong attributes. Not many mids his size can take a mark like he can.  And lets not forget hes only 20 and has played  just 12 games.

did he say that it was players who hadn't hit the 80 game mark or players that were already there?

if the latter, my guess of the dees 13:

hogan

n jones

salem

watts

petracca

viney

brayshaw

gawn

tyson

oliver

vince

t mcdonald

weideman

so four of them are already at 80+ mark, in n jones, watts, vince and t mac. and in my view i'd question whether watts or t mac are close to elite. good players, not elite. nate and vince are, in my view.

if you remove those four and add players who haven't hit that 80 game mark, i would probably add:

stretch

kent

vandenberg

neal-bullen

I think when talking elite they would be using something like the Champion Data interpretation of the top 10 percent in their position relative to the whole comp. So on that basis,  TMac would definitely be in that 13. Extrapolating that interpretation out, I would guess it looks something like this:

Tall Defenders:

O Mac

Small/Medium Defenders:

Salem

Vince

Ruck:

Gawn

Midfield:

Viney

Brayshaw

Oliver

N Jones

Midfielder/Forward ('high half forward'):

Petracca

Kennedy

Tall Forward:

Hogan

Weideman

Small Forward:

Garlett

I'd add that Hawthorn only has 8 elite players by this metric for 2016; so clearly the club's interpretation is a bit less stringent. This is why I have included Vince, Garlett and N Jones in my list, all of whom are top 15-20% in their positions.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
