C: M Jones Jones  Bugg
HF: Vanders  Watts  Kent
FF: Pedersen  Hogan  Garlett
Foll: Gawn  Viney  Tyson
Int: Oliver Harmes Kennedy Frost

I think that's a truer representation of how the team will line up.

Oscar Mac has played on the key forwards throughout the NAB Cup, so I'm not sure why that will change. Our backline throughout the preseason played poorly as a group. Still looks shaky.

Doubt that M. Jones and Bugg will line up on the wings. I reckon that Bugg tags Heath Shaw, and Harmes lines up on one wing and M. Jones the other.

GWS have 3 talls, one each, doesn't really matter. But I expect Garland to sit deepest and control the backline and Tom McDonald to be up the ground.

I don't think Bugg will tag Shaw, I reckon we trust a half forward in Harmes or Kent or even Matt Jones with that job. But for the sake of ball movement I think Jones will be on one wing and Bugg will be running along the other as well as taking a turn at half back.

As much as O Mac scares me I'm proud of the guy. Pick 53 for a key back, I mean comon

Where he was drafted is irrelevant if he doesn't play up to AFL standard. Long term, I think he'll be ok, but he looked out of his depth during the NAB Challenge. The intensity will go up twofold, so I'm worried about his inclusion.

I thought OMac progressed well over the NAB, his forward delivery in NAB 3 being miles ahead of NAB 1's miskicks...

In the absence of GWS's big forwards, maybe he's quicker and more attacking than Dunn...?

God help us. Unless Vince plays as a permanent half back, we really lack guidance and surety in the backline.

Everyone has been upbeat after the NAB Challenge, but we've really got a lot of holes in the team.

Out of his depth in NAB 1. Took the week off and really wasn't that bad against the Saints was he? Outmarked by Bruce at one stage but Bruce is one of the best marking forwards in the league so that's not a surprise.

It's a difficult one because there's no way he spoils, marks or even kicks as well as Dunn at his best. But he might cover the ground much better, run in attack better and make a couple of spoils or grabs that Dunn never would due to extra height. Plus he can probably player a higher % TOG as well.

Sounds like a cop out and a bit of trying to talk myself in to it but I think his benefit to the team will be more in little things that are hard for us to spot. Or he could just play a blinder!

I think Vince will. Which should mean Vince, Garland, Tom McDonald, Jetta as experienced players. Are they a great group with ball in hand or under pressure skill wise? Probably not. But they don't have an excuse to not be well set up and to help Oscar and Salem get in position.

There's actually a bit to like if you take the blinkers off - we've got some significant improvement to this team to come back in over the next couple of weeks (glass half full).

Im hoping vanders gets through this game ok because he hasn't played for a bit (nab 1?). Was surprised to see him picked ahead of Brayshaw who demonstrated match fitness last week.

on Dunny - reminds me of Gawny this time last year. Dropped him at the start of the year and it payed massive dividends later on. I suspect the same plot here.

Matt jones is a liability and only makes this side worse... How he still gets a game is beyond me??? Is he Paul's love child?

Have you been paying any attention at all this pre-season?

The players have reaped the rewards of a great pre-season. Now its time for the match committee to demonstrate an awareness of which players are best suited to the desired game plan. Oscar over Dunn is the only decision that wasn't obvious throughout NAB. Let's see what the Coaches see!

So Dunn has a groin ...misses nab challenge against saints... plays practice match in VFL goes okay but coaching panel decides that his match fitness not quite up to it so they pick Oscar.....fail to see all the angst....seems quite clear to me .....just need a bit of faith in the people who coach our club

he didn't strike me as quick in the nab. i remember watching him and bemoaning his flat-footedness

Er, I am worried about Oscar too but who will he be shown up by?

No Patton, Cameron, McCarthy.

It all comes back to our midfield and how they compete and run.

Win the contested footy, get 250 touches in space, put it forward 55 times, and win by 5 goals.

Oscar McDonald won't be a good enough excuse if the reverse happens.

OMac and Frost are my two biggest worries.

With no Cameron, McCarthy or Patton we might be able to get away with OMac in the side, so that helps.

I'm not sold on Frost at all, let along as a forward, but he's clearly in Roos'/Goodwin's good books so he gets a crack first up.

The remainder of the team looks great (based on NAB form) and we have talent waiting in the wings to keep the pressure on the 22 who get to play this week.

Bring it on.

My best guess is that Matt Jones will do a defensive forward role on Shaw. If like named he plays at HB, Bugg will get the job. He is huge if we can shut him down. Saturday cannot come quickly enough

It would make sense if Frost went down back to play on Lobb, and used his speed for rebounding. O Mac doesn't offer speed, foot skills or defensive skills. Strange selection.

Players and coaches have been going on all preseason about the increased competition for spots and improved depth making us a better team.  What's the point of having competition for spots if you're not going to pick and drop players the 'fans' like.

The way Demonland has melted down you'd think we'd dropped Ablett and replaced him with Jason Daniels.

I reckon one of Frost's key role thats been alluded to is to draw his player away from Hogan to ensure he's one-out where possible, so dummy leads, lots of movement and then focused on defensive pressure, so Hogan doesn`'t blow his gasket and lose his position in the forward structure for when the new forward line pressure results in the ball quicking coming back to him...

Its actually a great role for Frost and suits the new forward approach and attacking mindset.

Cognilio is another notable absentee. That's good i guess.

Whoever this Stiffin Cognilio guy is, it'd be worth Tyson, Frost & Bugg having a word in his ear after the game about moving to a club that's on the up-&-up!

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
