I use to think we should scrap the NT deal and play all games at the G.

Now, especially with the ridiculous draw we get every season playing 7/8 of the non-Vic teams at home, I'm starting to think we should play 4 games in the NT. If we can pocket $1m a year from that it will would be great.

It's time this club put longer roots down in the City of Melbourne considering last year was the first time we had used it as a launching pad...

no offence to the NT but it is the last remnant from the previous regime. A Ca$h grab that has weakened further our chances of winning games in the following weeks. 

Winning will make the extra Cash you want at our 100,000 seat home Stadium. With the right list and attitude we can fill it.

I agree but if we can't even crack 40K members we have no hope of capitalising on our 100K seat stadium. Maybe in the long term, but not now.

We should be playing all home games in Melbourne,  end of story.

Its the AFL that should be covering any loses we get at the gate in Victoria.  Isnt that the whole idea of equalization?

 Absolute joke we have to travel to the NT (or anywhere else) to make $$$ and we lose home games in the process.

beyond the sponsorship, from a media perspective, the nt deal was reasonably successful in terms of driving repucom. the biggest issue is it's never the free-to-air game back to victoria - but it is when we play in alice obviously, but that's less value for us and more for port!

 

i'm all for stopping the deal, but i don't know how we make up the shortfall in revenue.

It has to be closer to 2-3 million to make the whole exercise completely worthwhile Gonzo (for 4 games) - however, if we could pull 30.000 plus to the games where we host an interstate team at the MCG, we'd be getting much bigger cheques and then we'd probably have no need to sell-off games (easier said than done)

Of course, you're right about us generally hosting 7-8 games against interstate teams so it's an ongoing issue with regards to us trying to make some decent coin out of these matches.

The issue is that we don't do that so the 600k for 2 games sold-off is needed to help balance the books ... we really need a Hawthorn type deal but because we've been so unsuccessful on the field, it's hard to strike any sort of lucrative deal like that. 

If we at least started winning more games than we lose (wouldn't that be nice) we'd be in a much better position - both in home attendances (and therefore, larger cheques) and also, for how much money we could bring in from the sold-off games (if the need was still there)

Win a lot more games and we'll be much better off (either way)

The time has come for this Club to become more proactive in our own City and not make any excuses On or Off the field. 

We live in a big city now that is very diverse. I realize we are not the only club in Melbourne, but we are the only one to bare it's name. 

Concentrate on winning games. Doors will open. 

We keep selling HOME games so that our MEMBERS are denied the ability to watch games for a Cash grab then we are enevitably diluting the club and merely surving on the drip feed...

What we have to do wih the Darwin deal is lobby for the game before the bye. That would make a big difference.

That would help. But i doubt we would get it as a given every year. 

We need to find healthy revenue streams closer to home so the playing group are in no way compromised...

Hawthorn - 3 Premierships in a row, 70,000 members, recently signed a 5 year extension with Tassie.

But hey, I'm sure we can ditch interstate sponsors and fill the G every week with our bottom 4 finishes and 30,000 members...

That's what I took from it, the first quote from Nathan Barrett felt all positive and the second from Adam Giles (aside from comparing us to the Eels) was more about what he wanted to see rather than what we weren't doing. As we live in a bubble down here it's very hard to say what they actually do up there. 

I also feel that the AFL has always scheduled our matches, particularly in Darwin, extremely poorly. They should always have the bye afterwards, then the club could say to the players they have recovery up in Darwin and take some clinics on the Monday and are free from Tuesday. Would also (more importantly) mean the players have better chance at recovery.

I know this brings in a fair bit of $$$ so I won't say I'm happy if we lose it but I won't be devastated as every year we know the impact it has on the team AND the fact that they are two home games sent to a neutral venue. IF we do lose it we'd better find some good sponsors, otherwise red ink could be coming out.

If North's deal in Hobart isn't renewed I'd rather go down that option.

Hobart to Melbourne is about an hour on a plane, would be cheap to get to, I'm sure a substantial more people from Melbourne would make the trip compared to a Darwin game, I know I would.

The last time I looked into a trip to Darwin for a Saturday game I would had to taken Friday off for my flight and to be able to actually do something on Sunday would have a middle of the night flight Monday morning that would require me going directly from the Airport to work. Not to mentio the flights were going to be able $450, I'm not travelling to anywhere in Australia that costs more than an international flight. $200 return to NZ, $500 return to Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Bali etc all cheaper than a trip to the top end.

I'm also a fan of cooler climates, I'm much happier having a few froths rugged up in layers at Bellerive rather that sweating it out in a singlet in the desert.

If we thought this deal was going to grow into the Tasmania/Hawk partnership we were kidding our selves. Watching those games live was a joke with only a couple of  people standing around the ground, it looked more like an EFL game then an AFL game. I'm sure PJ is working on getting another sponsor to replace the NT money so we can be done with this train reck and move on from the past.

I agree. PJ at the season launch did say that besides AHG, all other sponsorships are up for renewal at the end of the year. He'll have many an idea.

As for the NT deal, i would honestly prefer that it end. Sure their sponsorship is up around the 500k/year mark, but it is 2 home games that are 'away', plus the residual effect the following week is influential. Should we not renew with NT, we get 2 home games back and we don't have the lagging effects of playing up north the following weeks. It gives us such a better chance of obtaining the 2 x 4 points after those games, which is vital.

Plus, i'm sure PJ&Co will be able to find suitable replacements, sponsorship-wise. Tongue in cheek by PJ i know, but it would be more than handy if AHG decided to sign on for the additional 5 years @ $3m/year!!!

New NT supporters/members? - close to absolute zero. Everyone who lives there has a team already. They're mostly economic migrants from the southern states. Their children have teams. The opposition we meet there conduct the same community clinics that we do. We have been outnumbered in support for every (home) match I've ever attended up there (inc. randoms like Brisbane and Freo). There will be no generational boon as to membership in a growing market a la the vague GWS blueprint or whatever. We've been playing there for $ and nothing greater. They (the NT gov) can get more benefit economically by signing someone else (like a big fat Essendon injection while the Bombers are in a bottom-out phase) and we, right now, should be looking at richer sponsorship deals in the lead-up to our current ones reaching expiration.

Simply: The deal has kept us afloat in the past few years. But we're on a serious marketable upswing now and they can do better and we can do better closer to home. Handshake and done and dusted. Pretty sure that's exactly what's already going on behind and in front of the scenes in the past few days.

Ugh.... I'm not even sure anymore if you're missing the point on purpose. If the most successful team of the last 10 years is playing games interstate do you honestly think we can survive without doing it right now? Forget where it is, that's irrelevant to the point.

I rang the club during the week as me and my boy are heading up to the Gold Coast in May for the game - they said they were really happy with the take up in interest with approx 15 people going on the advertised trip. Said they typically only get 5 for the NT games. I'd have thought if it were truly collaborative, that the club would be doing more

Dogs have Ballarat as a shorts sponsor akin to Hawks with Tasmania and us with NT, so we've missed that country market.
