I would have thought that now Crowley is on the Essendon books he can't have anything to do with the other 12 players. If that's right, someone needs to tell the Essendon social media person that this tweet was probably not the best one to publish.

it's a grey area. social contact is not forbidden. if he is just giving advice on how to cope and stay focussed that should be ok.

It's about time the players broke ranks...they would have been crazy to go with a deal brokered by the AFLPA (AFL) and the EFC.

It's finally dawned that they need to look after themselves first.

The Law Institute of Victoria has been quick off the mark and linked the Australian article to its newsletter -

Lawyers have begun evaluating the financial cost and injury faced by Essendon players who have been banned for doping.

Mr Kelty has made his view known to senior figures at the AFL and Essendon that the game will need to find a substantial sum — between $10 million and $20 million — to redress the financial and reputational loss suffered by Essendon players.

The alternative, Mr Kelty has warned, is drawn out litigation that would potentially cost $50m.

Why would "the game" need to find this money? Surely the drug cheats have to pay up?

I liked this,

Essendon gave its players false assurances about the substances that club sports scientist Stephen Dank planned to inject them with. The club has already pleaded guilty to criminal breaches of occupational health and safety laws for failing to provide its players with a safe workplace.

Civil claims for negligence are established on a lower standard of proof. As one lawyer involved in the case remarked: “It’s a lay down misere. Negligence will be admitted in due course.’’

That Jobe is one to 'throw down the gauntlet' is significant as he has been the glue that has kept the 34 unified throughout.  Really feel for the guy.  He has been a stalwart for three years now seems to have had enough.

To a certain extant I have sympathy for all the players, including Jobe who seems like a nice person. But i do wonder about his culpability in all of this. He is (was?) the captain of the club and such the key leader among the players - the talisman really. Surely he, and other senior players but in particular him, have to accept some responsibility for not refusing to participate in the supplement program, or at the very least discussing it with their managers, AFPLA , parents or for that matter ASADA.

If younger players had reservations it would have been very hard to take a different path once the senior players gave the program their approval.

Interesting comments by Hinkley, they end up with one less player than Essendon.

But the thing that interests me most is his comment about there not being a contingency plan already in place for CAS handing out bans. Surely event the inept and corrupt beast that is the AFL would have to have given this SOME thought? Apparently not.

Very interesting.  I hope we make a fuss too.  I bet the AFL did not offer Port, Saints and us the top-up option in case we diminished the stock of players that EFC could pursue.  Then again, maybe I'm ascribing too much foresight to the hapless characters running our game.

Hahaha Essendrug just don't care about rules and regs..still

secret handshakes are the way that club began long ago..

the same attitude still prevails. They believe they are above common law...

My first thought about legal action by players against the EFC suggests that the consent forms they signed which got them into strife with CAS may now be their undoing in the legal action.

I'm looking forward to finding out more about the circumstances under which the consent forms were signed. In particular, the extent to which the players were put under duress, and by whom.

Of course, there's the question of whether EFC - not to mention a certain ex-coach - are comfortable about this being discussed in minute detail in court.

I certainly don't want my clubs money to pay for this. If it does then there will be no financial assistance given by me next year

THIS IS AN ESSENDRUG PROBLEM..Not a collective AFL one...

I was wondering why Eddie hasn't come out and vigorously condemned the Kelty statement.  Eddie would go ballistic if a penny of AFL money was to go to the Swans!

...then I remembered that Kelty is the Chairman of the Board of David Evans' company of which Eddie is a Board member.

So, hard to separate Essendon from the AFL swyl especially when all the other relationships between key players are considered.

So with Eddie gone quiet, which AFL Club Chairman is going to speak up for the other 17 16 clubs and lobby strongly for their interests...just to keep everyone 'honest'...yes, I know that is an oxymoron in current circumstances.

It needs a strong club to go in to bat...Hawthorn would be a good one to step up to the plate.

This was Essendon's "Whatever it Takes" program.

They can pay for it.

If the AFL bails them out then i will not be spending money on an AFL product again..i have believed Essendrug has been guilty since day 1.

They can get $$ from the local Essendrug Masonic Hall to bail them out.

given kelty was on the afl board for the duration of this saga (till end 2015), shouldn't he stay out of this and stop politicking?

by the talk in the press it is more essendon's insurer's problem

one legal eagle said they want to find out how much the insurer will pay before they decide to add the afl to the litigation (i.e. if there is any shortfall)

lawyers are in box seat as neither essendon nor the afl wish to go to court less their skeletons get exposed. personally i hope they do contest it so there is no excessive profiteering

Can't wait for a comment from Essendon's insurer or their lawyers.

the only comment you'll get will be spin about how the player's welfare is paramount to them and how the players deserve sympathy and how they are working tirelessly for a fair and just outcome, yada yada

Now that's a nasty side-effect. Didn't hear about that one previously,

That is why I would like to see one of the strong AFL clubs eg Hawthorn speak up loudly, as Eddie has gone all quiet!

Otherwise the AFL will just steam roll their way thru'.

Those companies whom insure the insurance companies...

Lloyd's of London as an example.

After the oil tanker went down in Alaska in the early 90's they took their shareholders to the cleaners.

My stepdad being one of them.

He is still liable today...

Except Hal Hunter who is taking them to court to find out what drugs they actually gave him. How dare he do that!  AFL the house of whited sepulchres.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
