Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Not sure about training but good to see a few of the boys getting together to play some backyard cricket once the serious stuff finished.

Oscar behind the stumps, Jesse batting, vanders, JKH and Salem all fielding and I think Petracca bowling (out of shot). Pic by Gus Brayshaw.

These boys will want to see the journey together. I like this :)

This doesn't surprise me.

I've not read it elsewhere, so I'm claiming it as a first (Stu), but Hoges nearly always bounces the ball left-handed "Robbie Flower-style". Having a son who bowls left-handed, bats right-handed and plays tennis left-handed I recognised this with Hoges early on.

It doesn't surprise me that he's a good left-foot kick.

Yep - one of my sons is exactly the same. In fact, he does everything left handed except hold a cricket bat. I tried to put it in his hand left handed thinking he'd find that more natural, but he always just ended back the other way. He's only little though so perhaps it'll change as he gets more comfortable.

Jesse could also be completely ambidextrous and only favours one hand/foot for certain tasks out of habit. My sister is like that, though for sporting it meant she was equally hopeless with both hands.

Can he play forward?

From an article about Oscar:

"He said this year would be focused on development.

“I do a lot of work with the backline group and at the moment I’m training a bit with the forward line group as well. They’re trying to develop me in both areas of the game and we’ll go from there.”

So he bats right handed?

The more important arm in batting right handed is the left as the bat is the extension of that arm so if he has more control with that hand he will be better off in the long run.

There is a theory on this with great cricket players too - Lara, Sobers etc. If right handed, dominant eye being forward (so a LHB) is advantageous. Think Michael Clarke as well.

Also the bottom hand does all the directional work. i.e. closing the face and opening the face of the bat to direct the ball into gaps.

when one bats one uses both hands, so it is neither left or right handed

rather it is more a case of left sided or right sided

interesting note. ambidextrous literally means both sides right handed (dexter being the right hand, with sinister being the left)

ambilevous means both sides left handed and is generally meant in a demeaning manner such as clumsy. there is also the term ambisinistrous

Went to a sportsman's night a number of years ago. Merv Hughes was a speaker. He related a story of a Vic Sheffield Shield game, for which Dean Jones was captain. At that time, James Sutherland, current CEO of Cricket Australia debuted in the team, playing at the 'G. A right arm fast bowler usually. Merv was bowling and the ball was clipped down to third man, where Sutherland was fielding. He returned the ball to the keeper with his left arm. Seeing this, Merv turned to Jones and asked; "Is that bloke amphibious?" Typical Merv.

Having strength in your left arm is fantastic for a right hand batsman because it eliminates the variable of the right arm (bottom hand) being needed for power on some shots - it will create a more stable shot.

Kids usually go with their favoured hand for their bottom hand because they just want to hit the ball as opposed to direct it and the bottom hand supplies the power. Hence why it is a good way to learn with your dominant hand being your top hand.

Helps keep the left elbow high and get on top of the drives (on, off and straight) and the blocks (front and back foot)

Wait a moment, Hoges bats left handed!

Actually, he could be one of the new breed that deliberately bat goofy so their dominant hand controls the bat.

Cross-dominance is actually a pretty good trait to have. I write with my right, but everything else with my left. When I used to play football, even though my left-side was dominant, I was able to pick up kicking on my right really quickly because my brain could process an act with that side in the same way as the left side. It helped me get as far as the final 40 for the under-18s Knights squad but didn't get any further than that unfortunately. Every scouting report I got would mention "great with both feet" as the first positive. But don't ask me about the negatives...

As mentioned above Vanders was at training last Monday and participated fully in most sessions but left a little earlier than the others. He is a strong bodied mid who I believe may be in for a big year if injury free. Given last year was his first at AFL level probably just being managed.

I'm told they started this cricket game at 10am, Hogan won the toss and elected to bat. Much to the frustration of the others, he was still there at stumps.

There's NOTHING he's not good at.

    GAMEDAY: Rd 07 vs Richmond

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

    TRAINING: Tuesday 23rd April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin ventured down to Gosch's Paddock to bring you his observations from this morning's Captain's Run including some hints at the changes for our ANZAC Eve clash against the Tigers. Sunny, though a touch windy, this morning, 23 of them no emergencies.  Forwards out first. Harrison Petty, JvR, Jack Billings, Kade Chandler, Kozzy, Bayley Fritsch, and coach Stafford.  The backs join them, Steven May, Jake Lever, Woey, Judd McVee, Blake Howes, Tom McDonald

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh

They are out for a run just as it starts raining. It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. They are all playing soccer, huge amount of noise. 36-40 (difficult to get a count) in the main squad, biggest I've seen it in ages. Choco is barking out the orders. Goody has intense body language as he observes. Bowey in a lime green cap (no contact), and in the sim

    ICEBREAKER by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

    MAULED by Whispering Jack

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
