I went up to Ron Barassi during that game (against the Bulldogs?) when Scully got a heap of touches and said something like " Looks like we've got another champion no.31 in the making".

Still makes me blush to this very day.

I also thought Jay Viney was going to be as good as Todd.

I don't think that anyone could have predicted what would happen with Jurrah. Everyone that saw him play was awestruck.

I confess that I referred to Jurrah as a star on these boards. Caused a lot of commotion and debate at the time, even though he was arguably the most exciting, freakish and talked about player in the AFL at that particular time, 2010-11.

Short lived footy career, a real shame.

  • Brent Heaver
  • Darren Cuthbertson
  • Travis Johnstone (will always treasure him; but a couple of goals he kicked against Collingwood in his first season just roving and running into an open goal, where he could read it and no one else could. He was almost like the bloke in the matrix just dodging bullets. He really could have been the one)
  • Jordie McKenzie
  • Jeremy Howe (he has some kind of accuracy problem with his his kicking but he strikes the ball so purely so I kept forgiving)
  • Cale Morton (WTF happened he started like a young Travis Johnstone but progressed even worse)
  • Matthew Bate (That nobody else picked him up after our desisting was very telling)

I think he's the best natural talent that I've seen in my time supporting the Dees. He could've been absolutely anything.

I'm not sold on the new logo.

It looks top heavy and unbalanced. Looks like something a Rotarian would wear on their lapel. In a word "plain and underwhelming."

Make that three words.

Nice confession. Should put that in the logo thread too...

Exactly. I said he would win the Brownlow based on his first year. His footy instinct was terrific. Then they tried to coach game plans, strategy and tactics into him. Not sure that brought out his best.

You know what I confess to?

Not wanting to throw more Demons under the bus.

I don't hold grudges against Demons.

Some of you would treat criminals better than some passionate Demons.

I don't hate Ian Ridley in death - let it go.

I thank Paul Gardner, McLardy, Gutnick, and Szondy, for their time and effort.

I admire Cameron Schwab's ideas if not his execution.

[censored] let it go.

A confession is to admit a sin for absolution.

Well, I will give it.

Will you?

What about players who leave? It's hard to believe that arguably the most famous player leaving for another club was our own Barassi at the end of 1964. I guess it helps if you helped your team win six premierships first.

My position is that I don't despise players who choose to leave. They're just exercising the same right the club has to get rid of them. Those players are just acting first.

I confess to missing the start of #demonbracketclassic

And now I see that Andy Goodwin didn't even make the main draw...can I vote retrospectively (and often)?

It's an outrage...Andy was a cult hero, a hero, my hero in his time at the Dees.

I used to arrive early to watch the twos from the top deck of the Southern Stand when he was playing...no-one was there so you could hear the players swearing, and the thump of fist on leather as Andy repelled attack after attack with his stoic defence.

One day he was 40m in the clear on the half back flank, Southern Stand side at the Punt Road end, a high floater approached and he proceeded to use the double-fisted punch to send it about 25 rows back! All on his own, classic. No-one was at the ground yet (except me and my sister in the top deck) so it took an attendant about 5 minutes to find the ball and return it to the boundary umpire.

One day after another punch from behind some other bloke (top deck, Southern Stand) stood up and bellowed "ANDY"...I like to think he's a Demonlander.

Years later I modelled the defensive aspects of my game in the Murrumbeena twos on Andy's play. Always team first. I was just like a shorter*, fatter, slower, less fit, less skilled(!) version of Andy Goodwin.

And now I missed my chance to vote...shattered.

Please Supermercado...add one vote to his score

* I might actually be just taller

The tour was in 1967. I was all of 14 at the time. Also on the bill were Eric Burdon and the Animals, Paul and Barry Ryan, The Loved Ones and The Mixtures.

I swear I have never been involved in dancing of that nature. May the good lord strike me down if I'm lying!

Paul & Barry Ryan. Paul decided to drop out of performing and stuck to songwriting for his brother. My thirdborn is named after their most famous song, which was released the following year. Useless fact #443.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
