These academies are getting out of hand! Seems completely unfair that Sydney would keep getting top 5 picks when have won two flags in last 10 years and are generally in the top 4.

They are going to need to these quality kids. They stuffed up big time on the Franklin deal, and that will come back to hurt them at some point.

Would Ryan Burton be a reach a pick 7? I guess the major issue is how his leg has recovered, but before that it seems he would have been top 5. I also like that he has a bit of strut about him and would complement Jesse well.

He does sound like an interesting prospect, but I don't think that we'll take a punt on him with either of our first 2 picks due to his injury.

And don't get angry if you don't understand; the Northern Clubs will now be playing under the paradigm that if they have one or two excellent or very good academy players they will only be able to draft them and have picks in the 60s and 70s to fill their list.

It is really the best scenario - they get local kids to grow the game in their area and the game doesn't allow them to continue to profit to the degree they did.

I think people misunderstand the academies a bit, the players are rated so highly because they have been through that program, they're talented players, not necessarily as talented as what this draft position may reflect, but they've been under intense AFL training programs with development coaches, it's like if we got Parish at the end of last year and gave him a year under Roos and McCartney, i guarantee he'd be rated as the number 1 or 2 pick now

im tired of the extra assistance the northern clubs get, especially when they have been dominant, successful in recent times (eg brisbane, sydney). and i get the new system but gun players are rare (~number 1 draft picks) the difference between pick 35 and 55 compared with picking up one of the 2-3 gun players of the year is significant

Id still be happy with Parish and Mathieson

From there on youd only be topping up and refining the midfield and future Trading /Drafting can look at other needs etc.

We've often talked about 'best available....now it seems many want to go to 'needs" only..

I would have though the best avail approach would be to gather mids with these picks then.

Given we have not done well with the lighter frame types and Roos preferences I would not be surprised if we picked Curnow before Parish and my smokey for our second pick would be Kieren Collins who looks to be a bit like Roos did as a player.

I of course have no idea and this is based on watching a couple of videos. I reserve the right to proclaim our picks as inspired and or lament our failure to pick Ollie.

Yes, the best scenario - they want to showcase the local kids that come through their system to attract locals to watch and attend and get involved in junior footy to start that process all over again. It is a necessity in these growing markets.

And they are paying a price for these talents that is finally commensurate with the price any other club would pay.

Sydney will get Mills, maybe Dunkley if he nominates them (not a fait accompli apparently, he has 4 days to decide) and fill their list with picks past our 4th pick in the 60s...

I don't see a fairer scenario really - they are given an albeit arbitrary value and they must pay that value or relinquish rights to the player.

And if three Judds come out of the Harbour next year - they will have to trade away a few players to fit those kids into the team or lose one.

The 'could be anything' of this draft. Can play as a strong marking key forward – he’s the same height as Jack Darling – or as a big midfielder. When in midfield, he has similar attributes and athleticism as Jarryd Roughead when the Hawks throw him into the middle. Most clubs spoken to feel he is a no-brainer at pick three, but who knows the Dees will do!

9. Darcy PARISH (5)

25/7/97 | 180cm | 74kg | Midfielder | Geelong Falcons
Some will be surprised by Parish falling behind Gresham but I’m not the only one to have them ranked this way. Parish is a classy ball user who has plenty of grunt. If there is a knock, I would like him to tackle a bit more but his record over the past two years is extremely impressive.

11. Clayton OLIVER (25)

22/7/97 | 187cm | 86kg | Midfielder | Murray Bushrangers
A look back at his vision from early in the season should glimpses of what we began to see on a regular basis in the back half of the season. He sees things unfold quicker than most others and uses the ball very well by hand and foot. He is also very strong overhead and shows great courage when backing back with the flight of the ball.

14. Sam WEIDEMAN (13)

Courageous and strong in the air and could well wind up in the top 5 or 6 on draft night. He has a few more strings to his bow than just being a ‘mark and kick’ key forward as he has played back at times in recent years. From all reports his medical should come back fine despite some concerns.

Francis. I think we'll take him at 3. Pick 7 is the more interesting one. But I think a tall will slide, GC have no use for another tall - and probably a somewhat speculative one. They have Lynch, Day and Wright, So I think we will be in a position to consider Curnow/Weiderman, or take a midfielder in Oliver/Milera (I don't think Parish will make it to 7). Pretty good position to be in, but I can't see us overlooking Francis at 3, he is a Roos type player, and he ticks all the boxes, eventually he will push into midfield and be strong, powerful type (like Dangerfield).

why would you want sydney to rise? they are doing quite well.

the normal draft has the equalisation measures that are available to all clubs if performing badly

without the academy bonus the northern clubs have the same pool of players available to everyone

i don't mind in principle gws and gcs getting assistance on a one-off basis (e.g. priority pick system) if it becomes necessary

brisbane and sydney have won 5 premierships in the last 14 years (and been in 8 grand finals).......punching well above their weight
