Bloody travesty that Essendon get two picks before us. If they take Parish and Curnow I'll be livid.

Forget the rest mate. Back the FD to get in another player who will fit our culture well and prove to be another excellent selection like the last few before him. I couldn't give a stuff who the rest draft.

I need somewhere to say this

Well it would probably leave Weideman for us to draft. He could be the one to help out Hogan. All is not lost, we'll get a decent kid at pick 6. One of Francis, Parish, Curnow or Weideman. I would be more [censored] if we had pick 7 and all those kids had already been selected.

Looks like we shut up shop on day 1

Negative name, Negative attitude. Why so certain we haven't been working our butts off to get deals happening? As others have pointed out, we don't have a lot to offer in terms of tradeworthy players. Things aren't as grim as they seem. Have some faith in those doing the job.

Yes.

My take

Howe over rated and not the most effective use of abilities. Nett effect in a game..marginally positive.

Another player coming into his position and playing with more verve, heart and effect, even if remaining on the ground is a better team participant. Thats a win and we're better for it.

Toumpas's place on the list provided 3/5 if 4/7 of sfa !! A FIT able and more competitive player instantly provides a greater benefit to the list. Thats another win.

So yes. The departure of those two players makes us better.

Add Milera into that mix. Think we'll do ok at 6.

Highlights - plenty of activity today.

Charlie Dixon has officially been traded from the Gold Coast Suns to Port Adelaide in a complicated three-way trade which also involved a trading of picks with the Richmond Football Club.

Collingwood's Nathan Freeman was today traded from the Pies to the Saints, with the Saints also sending next year's second round pick back to the Pies.

Essendon midfielder Brent Stanton is set to finally sign a new contract with the Bombers. The contract is expected to be for one season, with a "reachable" trigger to see it extend into two.

Troy Menzel's future is up in the air, with all the talk this afternoon surrounding a possible trade for the Blues' forward to the Crows. Expect that deal to get done. As part of the potential Menzel trade, it is expected Sam Kerridge will be traded from the Crows back to the Blues, as well as a second round pick.

Carlton looks set to secure four youngsters from the GWS, with Liam Sumner, Lachie Plowman, Andrew Phillips and Jed Lamb all a chance to move to Victoria from Western Sydney.

For those whinging about the Toumpas selection at pick 4 in 2012, you may note that pick 3 in that year was Lachie Plowman who is likely apparently to go to Carlton for not that much.

Toumpas played 27 games to Plowman 20.

To put even less importance on draft position, O'Rourke was pick 2 that year and has played only 11 games.

We couldn't have picked Plowman.. a fruit of another vine.....yes

Was having the very same debate with a Melbourne supporting friend who was bleeding about our return for Toumpas.

The reality is all three have done little to further their stock since 2012. If the Menzel trade goes down, it'll be 4 of the top 10 that will be onto their second clubs. Add Kennedy as another first rounder to switch from that draft and Josh Simpson as on who is out of the game altogether.

Well my user name is not as holy as yours i guess... as i said in a previous comment... i don't doubt the club are working hard and i hold out hope someone good will come from it.

Carlton's Menzel is being pursued by Adelaide, reportedly for pick 29 and Sam Kerridge.

Lately, ex-Carlton forwards go almost as well as ex-Brisbane mids, and Menzel certainly has some ability, though inconsistent.

I'd be interested in how people rate him. I fully expect a lot of 'Jack Watts only shorter' misgivings.

Meanwhile, I was looking at our list to see if we had anything equivalent to Kerridge to offer, and noticed that really just about every young player we have left is someone you'd want to hang on to. Good times.

Now, BB, who was it who once said that doing the same thing is akin to madness...

Anyhoo, like you, I'm relieved these guys have gone.....but, (some) D'Landers will have us believe that Howe was worth pick one and Toump pick four.....

I think you will find if you look back at the posts at the time of his draft, that most Demonlanders didn't think Toumpas was worth pick 4 and still don't.

The question is though, had we drafted Ollie Wines instead, would've he gone on to become the player he is now?

He would've been better than Toumpas no doubt, but probably not as good as he has become.

Would Geelong's Shane Kersten be worth a look? Young 22 year old. 2nd tall. Could be a good option depending on how other trades work out

I think he may be out of contract too

He's self driven

Probably didn't need a club with a 'hard work' ethic to get up and about

I thought Toumpas was a good get at 4 going by his form as a 16 yo in the SANFL, his year as a 17 yo was interrupted but maybe should have put up some warning signs. The kid looked to be a really good get and for a number of reasons he has been a disappointment.

There was one incident in the SANFL GF that Toump played in that keeps coming back at me though and it was when he tried to take on an oppo ruck and got caught. This was before the hip problems and showed that he really didn't have the pace & smarts he has been credited with. He was a good kid at that level, maybe he can carve out a career at Port but he was done with us unfortunately.

However, the one that I would have been happy to take ahead of him was not Wines but Stringer. This is not hindsight, I've expressed a number of times that I thought he may well end up the player of his draft year. I think he's heading that way...

yes something of a myth that Toump was the go.

That supposedly more than a few experts thought Dimitri the goods only emphasises how much a raffle it really is.

Theres a lot to be said for people who really get the subtle nuances of footy as opposed the paid press.

Take it to the bank there are some here on our boards with as much if not greater insight to players that 'spectators' of the 4th estate.

I don't claim to be one for sure.

Sometimes it takes one to know one. Think about it.

And all they had to do was give Carlisle a few games up forward, one against the dogs in 2014 where he kicked 9 from memory? If only we'd done that with Howe, we might be sitting here with a pick 5 !

Not my recollection. Wasn't there a poll?

I'll answer my own question. Yes there was a poll:

Who should we select?

  • Wines (70 votes [29.29%] - View)
  • Toumpas (148 votes [61.92%] - View)
  • Other (0 votes [0.00%])
  • Don't know? (21 votes [8.79%] - View)

Anyone notice the branding on the GCS website in the "VIEW PLAYER PROFILES" section?

http://www.goldcoastfc.com.au/

Malceski front and centre. No sign of Ablett, O'Meara or Prestia. I'd like to hope there's a reason for that. :P

Exactly. It was only after we played Port in Round 1 2013 and saw Wines star and Toumpas struggle that the majority on here began to shift and express their doubts over our selection. At the time of the draft most experts and fans alike seemed to think that we made the right call.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
