I'm a bit disappointed we gave pick 25 for Melksham rather than 29 but that's what you get when you have a coach obsessed with win-win, fair deals (remember Jolly for pick 15?), and if every club held off in the hope of using different picks later in trade-week no deals would ever get done.

The disappointing thing in my opinion is some of the gaping holes in our list that have not been addressed at all.

Roos also banged on about getting an A+ grade player and that hasn't eventuated. I understand he was probably trying to attract an A grader with these comments, but he should have just kept his cards close to his chest and gone after these type of guys behind closed doors. We do this anyway. Instead, he set up supporter expectations in a way that were always probably unrealistic.

I've heard we were close with Prestia, but apart from him, gee, it was a comment that was more than likely bound to set him up for failure and supporter angst.

Carlton's Menzel is being pursued by Adelaide, reportedly for pick 29 and Sam Kerridge.

Lately, ex-Carlton forwards go almost as well as ex-Brisbane mids, and Menzel certainly has some ability, though inconsistent.

I'd be interested in how people rate him. I fully expect a lot of 'Jack Watts only shorter' misgivings.

I hardly think that it our midfield is still deplorable with Vince, Tyson, Vanders, Viney and Brayshaw added to N. jones and with next year having Petracca, Trenners, 2015 pick 6 (if used on a midfielder) joining the midfield plus the possibility that some of our new and existing recruits will be rotated through it. One good player added to our Forward structure (who could help out in the ruck) IMO would have more effect than a single addition to our midfield.

So that's six, plus a first year player and a bloke who hasn't played for two years. Absolute best case scenario, we have a midfield that runs eight deep and that's best case. The top 8 teams run at least 10 deep. You could add pick 6 and you're still short. Melksham and Kennedy will be around there too, but we need more.

The club clearly thought it was an issue when they pursued Tom Lynch. Unless you pick up an elite junior KPF in the pointy end of the draft, trading for an established one is the way to go.

Don't disagree, but I don't think it's quite the imperative that it was. We need a foil for Jesse, Dawes aint it.

EDIT: Should add that Weideman makes me nervous, if it was me, I'd pass on him. Big, tall injury prone (to this point), allegedly goes missing in games. Gee whiz, I know there's upside but it could so easily become a nightmare.

This is why I'm dissapointed. Roos was saying consistently on 360 about getting an "A" grader to the point where I was thinking he has someone lined up but unfortunately nothing eventuated.

We have three new players coming in provided Bugg gets done but nothing that "excites" me.

Time will tell how it works out but I am getting tired of waiting.

I love how Roos stated that we'll be aggressive in the trade period, yet 9 days down with only 2 to go (more like 1.5), we've brought in Melksham and Kennedy. We also seem to be sitting back waiting for other things to transpire before we engage trading again. Very aggressive indeed!!!

Part of the rhetoric as we know about Roos is that it plays to a wider audience. Its not simply telling supporters we will be aggressive, Its telling other clubs, 'make sure you speak to us because we have picks and players and will look at every deal'. We are definitely a club that others can do deals with and I would surmise we get to see a lot of potential deals - but closing them is tremendously hard.

Having said that, so far I am very underwhelmed with what we have done. There is an arguable improvement in the list but its marginal at best and we have to improve massively overall (but particularly in the midfield).

And we have to improve relatively - most people don't get this. Improving our list is one part of the equation but everyone else is doing the same. We have to improve relative to the top teams and this is where free agency has farked it up for the lower clubs. In any given year the bottom team will improve relatively against the top team by a single draft pick (because after the first pick the picks are essentially equal). If you stuff that pick up like we have done you haven't improved. With FA players leaving bottom clubs to go to the top clubs, the bottom clubs are worse off. So much for equalisation.

Its the 18th midfield in the comp. That's about as deplorable as it gets. But if you think its OK then........
