Cross, Viney and Garlett were our best.

Freo put the cue in the rack at quarter time. Another really disappointing performance.

My Bad I have always thought that's what it meant. You youngsters with your acronyms. Will get us older folk into trouble thru misunderstanding. Now I have to wonder what other ones I have misinterpreted or worse misused.

NQR usually means 'not quite right'.

To use it in a sentence: McKenzie, Terlich, Bail, M Jones, Spencer and Fitzpatrick are all NQRs.

Positives for me: Cross was a solider all day.

Viney was a brute.

Salem is seriously all class. We have missed him all year. Can't wait till he moves into the midfield.

Oscar Mac was one who surprised me. While he had a few errors you can already tell he is a much much better kick then his brother. Held his ground well. Can only get better.

Gawn was actually really good. His best game for a while. 21 disposals 10 marks 30 hitouts and a goal. Great effort.

Stretch reminds me of a quicker version of Salem, has a touch of class and actually goes in hard and has a dip.

Hogan 41 goals for the year.

Grimes giving Roosy the finger for starting him sub.

Negatives

Jones injury.

Matt Jones should never EVER be allowed to pull on the jumper again. He has EDFL standard skills and should be paid out immediately!

Tom Mcdonald needs to know his limitations and spend all summer working on his kicking.. On par with Matt Jones.

Our skills is absolutely horrific! It costs us so many turnovers and goals we just need to continue to add more class.

Vince is not quite right..

Well done after quarter time, despite another totally gutless and mystifying umpiring performance. We all know it's always worse out west, but do we have to expect them to be this bad? Someone of bravery and vision needs to fix umpiring, and soon.

It was 12 to our 2 in the first 2 qtrs. We won the free kick count 17 to 16. They are criminal those umps in the west, Have been for years. Still remember when we were 2 frees to 23 against west coast.

Posted
Take away the first qtr and i thought we had a genuine crack. By crack are you referring to the natal cleft between the buttocks and the poopoohole between the buttocks? That is a good analogy for our current players.

Condolences to N Jones.

Feel for him.

Condolences he was one of the worst players at turning the ball over before he got injured.

He's the leader he's he one that needs to lead but IMO I don't see him leading and his skill level over the last four or so weeks has been very very average for a captain of an AFL side.

Don't get me wrong I'm glad he's an MFC player but he needs to improve a lot in the above areas IMO.

I though we "had a crack" so to speak, today was more a case of us being a rubbish football team up against a monster midfield who just bullied us.

You have cleared up a few posts I have read over time. Often wondered why certain players were considered NQ ready when obviously its NQ Ready, particularly when some had played a fair few games.

Had we played like this last week, we would've trashed the bloooooos - it's not saying much, but sometimes just competing and better ball movement (amongst the multitude of errors) is enough to beat a rabble, had the players bothered to get a feel for the game.

Great that the commentary clowns picked up that Spencil wasn't there in the last quarter, after leaving the ground in the 2nd.

Better effort than last week but that's about it

Some observations from long term sufferer!

!2 frees to 4 in first quarter sets the tone! I challenge you to find a match where a team won from being 12 to 4 down in first quarter. Pavlich had almost as many frees as MFC at Qtr time... Two of those were debatable. Until stats are publicised about umpires and frees for and against this remains as the most corrupt part of game day!

Tom McDonald is a turnover King! I'm quite happy to offload him (but keep his brother). Matt Jones is a nice bloke but he has surely played his last game for MFC. Grimes is a keeper... He does turn it over occasionally, but compared to T McDonald and M Jones he is a keeper Stretch shows a lot! Gawn was very good against very good opposition. Jamar is streets ahead of Spencer and Spencer should not appear on our list in 2016. This was surely a game for 1 on 1 tactics... Our zoning in first quarter was laughable and gifted blokes like Pearce the chance to show off with his inside out shots for goal, but we all know he doesn't have the guts required for finals football and it will end in tears!

Posted

Yeh, Bail could have been playing as well.

wiz THAT is very.....VERY. .... NEGATIIIIIIIIVE!!!!

Posted

How is this for stats - N. Jones, 5 disposals, 0% disposal efficiency, 5 clangers.

Not surprised that we started to improve when he got subbed off

Could this be the worst game played by anyone ever (before he got injured)???

Posted

we obviously need a better midfield coach as our defensive pressure on their midfield was a lot of the time woeful, while ours midfield players were scrappy at best. Cross has me in two minds, he notched up a lot of possessions, but he does some dumb arse stuff with the ball that costs us goals, momentum and confidence. Too many players just don't want to take the quick safe 20 meter pass and hold onto the ball looking for better options and in the end are rushed to kick it along the boundary. I don't really understand how we can bomb the ball into our own 50 meter zone and not have a forward or someone there to contest against opposition players who tend to take easy uncontested marks.

Shepherding is obviously a lost art at Melbourne as is the word chase. All day long freo players were running by themselves time and time again with Melbourne players no where near them.

as for chipping backwards, god we are so predictable, chip from side to side until an opposition player can intercept in the corridor and waltz into goal.

Posted

- M.Jones; gets the footy with no one near him, sprints away from goal, hits a u-turn and bangs it out on the full, multiple occasions!

- Grimes; one captain goes and the old guard steps in and steps up, good game Grimes

- Michie; getting repeat games and imho showing improvement, ahead of others for mine in same boat

Champion of our club but I can't help but think that a spell on the sidelines for Jonesy could be a blessing in disguise for a couple of our other mids.

Thought Jones was incapable of injury. Maybe today was the tipping point. Happy 200th

Spencer should never have played (Gawn worked his way into the game after he came off the ground)

Matt Jones has the skillset of an 8 year old girl.

For all his ferocity, Viney is hopeless at disposing of the ball at the moment, even handpassing

Stretch shouldn't be playing

Credit to Grimes, he's pretty divisive on this forum but to me he looks like he wants to be out there more than others.

Just a bland game. It's hard to say the response to the opening 1.5 quarters was indicative of us playing well as it was probably Freo taking their foot off the pedal.

Posted

Would it be fair to say Samael, that your avatar is a dog with a watermelon helmut?

You probably meant Helmutt, but I see what you did there.

Posted

So;

Again we made unfathomable selection decisions. Making Grimes the sub. WTF is that about?? Was in the best last week and kicked a goal. They put Matt Jones in there ahead of him??

On Matt Jones saw another MJones classic fall in the back of a player to give away a mindless free. Two momentum killing OOF under NO pressure within 3mins of each other. Hopefully has played his last ever game for the club. Oh, and he had 1 possession up until half time I think.

Garland gave his customary 1st goal of the game away. I wish there was a bet for that.

We were supposed to come out fighting but alas we were 10 goals to nil down. That makes 4 weeks running we have been in that position or thereabouts. Who out here really thinks it isn't the coach?? Sure the players are pretty bad but a slight change of attitude is all I detected in the 1st qtr. And we won the tackles for the day. But I'll tell Roosy something for nothing. It aint the supporters and their negativity. In fact I am surprised there are supporters left.

Jetta holds the ball up whenever he gets it. Never plays on. Almost like he's waiting for the opp'n players to flood back.

Lost count of the number of times we had kicks smothered or waited so long before kicking the kick was mis-cued because the Freo player was right on them

We must have the dumbest footballers in the AFL. Some of the decision making is incomprehensible. They have no instinct or footy smarts. (altho I did see quite a smart along the ground kick by Newton that didn't quite come off)

The loose man in defence killed us again today. Hate to see the umber of intercept marks. The switching in their backline was as predictable as it was infuriating.

When a coach can't get players up for a game of footy there is more to it than bad players. They aren't doing what he says and he has to carry the can for that. Its pathetic.

Roos actually seems at a real loss to know what to do. He virtually admitted as much last week.

Salem and Viney for me were really the only highlights

Why is every one of your posts related to what Roos said earlier in the week? You don't need to reference it in ever single post you make. It's tedious.

As for the game - woeful, woeful start. We hung in there due to them taking their foot off the gas slightly and us lifting our intensity around the ground. There were some positives and the usual disappointing performances as well.

There is much work to be done this pre season.

Priority number one at the draft this year needs to be skilled, composed footballers. Salem stood out like a sore thumb in this regard today. Need more of his type.

Surely Matt Jones' days in the AFL are numbered. The left foot OOF, followed by the right foot OOF, both times under no pressure - and in the space of 5 minutes was laughably bad. I bet we'll see him again by Round 6 next year though.

I've got no idea why everyone is down in the dumps.......................This year is a big plus no matter which way you look at it.

We are playing September footy!!! Isn't that what it's all about?

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
