Behind the scenes with the Demons on draft day

Mark Stevens

December 01, 2008 12:00am

With No. 35, there is a feeling it will be much more difficult. The Demons want a tough "first-possession" player to help out Brock McLean -- someone who can win his own ball at the stoppages and feed it out to the runners.

Jack Redden, a 17-year-old from Glenelg, is that player. His inside clearance work in the last quarter of the SANFL under-19 grand final all but won the game for his team.

Redden is not one of the 73 players among the AFL's list of profiles of leading candidates, but he has created interest elsewhere.

"We're very keen on a grunt player like him. We need that in our footy club," Prendergast says.

If Redden goes, the Dees will happily settle for the indigenous brilliance of former Bunbury boy Jamie Bennell.

He is not the inside player the Demons had in mind, but they believe he will be the next best available if someone spoils the party and snaffles Redden.

But the curve-ball came at pick No. 25 when Brisbane pounced on the "grunt" player Redden, who the Demons had pencilled in for No. 35.

"We were keen on Jack, and we would have loved to get him," Prendergast says.

"We knew Brisbane were right into him, but we thought Brisbane might have been looking at him for the next round. But we couldn't control that.

"We rated other blokes more highly than Jack at the 17 and 19 picks."

When Redden was snapped up, the Demons immediately set their sights on Bennell -- even if he wasn't the tough ballwinner Bailey was after.

They snare him at 35.

"I thought Brisbane might have taken him (Rohan Bail) at 57. He's in their backyard and he's had a good season.

"I don't know whether we did trump them. They trumped us on the Redden one. We might've got them on Bail."

Interesting

It would seem to flatly deny all the rumours that we told Rory Sloane we'd take him at 35 if he was there, but then opted for Bennell.

Are there whispers we're actually looking at this bloke...again ?

Hes a good work-rate mid. We need good work-rate mids.

Not the worst thing that would happen.

Interesting.

He's nominated West Coast as his destination of choice.

According to Jay Clark we are in the mix for Jack along with West Coast and Adelaide

there expecting a pick between 15-25. Our pick 24 should get it done

Unless West Coast or Adelaide offer up a first rounder, which will of course be higher than that.

West Coast would give their 1st pick for him I would think.

"I don't know whether we did trump them. They trumped us on the Redden one. We might've got them on Bail." - Barry Prendergast, 2008. Classic stuff.

I'm sure the Lions were devastated.

I thought West Coast were using their first pick on Lewis Jetta, so presumably they couldn't beat us to Redden. Redden would be a much better option for pick 24 than Melksham / Bastinac / insert other dud here.

Selwood compo may come into play.

Heard that Selwood was staying and he wouldn't be worth first round anyway...

Still not set in stone. Not worth first round, but may give them an extra 2nd rounder to play with.

This is on Facebook and cites Jay Clark as the source:

"Adelaide, Melbourne and West Coast are the clubs vying for Lions midfielder Jarrad (sic) Redden"

Quality stuff

He's an Adelaide boy right? Could be tough..

Jay Clark actually said that in his trade chat on the HUN website today.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
