Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Is Nathan Jones captain material?

Don't quite know where to begin on this so I'll just answer the OP's question. Yes he is captain material. How many times has he kicked the "captains goal" this year when we've been in front and game in the balance? For crying out loud two weeks ago when every other player was missing goals to put Collingwood to bed he was the one that stepped up and put it through the middle. He's adored by the players, always goes in for the hard ball putting his body on the line and until Bernie came along was streets ahead as our best player.

He had a bad one on the weekend, truth is when I was watching him he didn't look right. He bumped into Lin Jong he bounce off him, Lin Jong! Whether he was just off or off his game it was probably one of his worst games for a long time.

But is he captaincy material? Give me a spell.

I think not, I am yet to see him stand up in a big game and pull us back from being down like today. He struggles with a tag and his impact has been minimal recently.

I suggest you open your eyes or actually attend games maybe?

Geelong... Shrugged a tackle from a standing start., drills one from 50.

Collingwood (Win).. Kicked a set shot from 50 to sink the pies.

Richmond.. Kicked a crucial snap when the game was on the line..

Collingwood (loss) Had 34 and kicked 2..

Aside from a few games everything else is practically 20 touches + and a goal minimum..

He has taken Brayshaw under his wing & even took Pendles by the scruff of his neck at half time to send a message to the pies that we were there and meant business..

It isn't just what he does himself but he also needs to let the other MFC players know when they arn't performing and pull their finger out of their ass. Not just run back to the center circle for another ball up after a player majorly [censored] up by being lazy

I wouldn't be surprised if he was another suffering from the flu after watching him on the weekend. Did also notice that he wasn't the battering-ram he usually is.

I think the question here isn't about his ability as a footballer, his quality as a bloke, or the fact he can kick the occasional "captain's goal", it's about his ability to bring the team together, to organize them when we're a mess, and to be our voice on the field.

The problem I see is that Nate is great at leading by example, but not so great at getting us organized or giving verbal instructions. For some teams that might not matter, but for a team that struggles so badly at sticking to it's structures and knowing what to do it certainly doesn't help.

All that said, at this stage there isn't anyone who is a better option, and he probably needs some help from the rest of the leadership group, as leadership isn't purely up to just the captain.

Simple answer ..... Yes!

Complicated answer ......................... Yes!

As a passionate demon I'm almost offended such a tread, discussion exists.

Having Michael Voss at his best would not have made any difference. Remember you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink and as many demonlanders have stated, throughout numerous other threads, some dee's are already in the exit lounge and no amount of leadership will change their approach.

Also note that it is a load of b#llsh!t that an introverted personality does not make a good captain. Often they make the best, as when they make a statement, everyone follows (listens). Sometimes an extroverted personality as a captain can be to outgoing and seen as not serious or responsible. If you want an insight at a club into captain material take a look at it's player player votes (over a few seasons) and you will quickly see where the respects lies.

Did you see the week he was wearing a mic whilst playing? Think it may have been the first match against the Dogs.

He was yelling like a maniac all day, directing the players, encouraging them and giving them due congratulations when a goal was kicked etc. I don't think he's an introvert on the field at all. Maybe off the field he just doesn't like talking to the media. We don't know how he behaves behind closed doors at the club.

I could hear him but are the players responding to him?

Right now it doesnt seem like they are...

I'm just going by the onfield evidence that I can see, obviously there's a lot we don't know, but we do look like a mess out there and I would think that's the responsibility of our leaders, of which Jonesy is the head.

What would Luke Hodge do if he was captain of the mfc? He would probably be jumping up and down demanding answers from his leadership group, players and coach,he would also expect players to incur some form of physical punishment i.e 10 Klm the next day plus

much more. Talking about existing problems doesn't always work. Nat Jones doesn't inspire me as a captain, probably should look outside the club.

Best we have.

The difference between him and say Luke Hodge is Hodge won't accept second rate from himself or his team mates and will spray them when required.

jones is too introverted and about his own game, not a bigger picture/team view which some one like Ling or Maxwell was.

The difference between him and Luke Hodge as a leader are the players he has around him. Pretty hard to rate Jones with this list I would think.

I don't think he's physically right. According to AFL stats, he only had 74% game time - less than everyone except Grimes & Jetta.

Jones was definitely one of the ones who lifted & got us going in the third quarter.

I don't think the captaincy is the problem.

If the whispers are correct, he (and many others) has been struggling to even get on the track the past two (or three) weeks.

He is definitely our leader.

To say "Luke Hodge is Hodge won't accept second rate from himself" is to suggest that Nathan will, which IMO is a bloody insult.

You go out and lead the team? OMG!!!

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
