Jack Watts

TBH Bobby I was on a decent bender following the Collingwood match as I was still on my AL from work...

I haven't seen anyone for the year in any team kick the ball into the man on the mark from a behind kick in....but don't worry Jack has managed to do it...that's why we drafted him.

We judge the team and players week by week, if you don't like what is said then bring up something positive about Wattsies game on the weekend...don't just defend Watts with "someone else also had a bad game ...blah blah blah"

You don't have anything factual to defend Jack with,, he was putrid on e weekend...and I will continue to believe that until proven otherwise......

This forum is not just designed for people to support Watts, we can hate him on here also if we want to...

Yes. He had a poor game on Sunday. One of many under the weather.

I may have asked you (or another) before - have you ever had to exert yourself with a flu-like illness? Had to focus mentally, let alone physically? Presumably not or you may understand. I strongly suspect were it one or two they would have been replaced but couldn't due to weight of numbers.

But over the season if you had to have the ball in someone's hand at a tight moment requiring an accurate well planned pinpoint disposal I would say a poll of posters here would have it in the hands of JW by a large majority - certainly not in the hands of your namesake

So, time to move on and get over what was a crap game by many individuals yet a surprisingly competitive overall team effort in the throes of adversity.

(I know you will never be happy while a fit JW remains on our list, but really this incessant bagging is frankly boring).

Watts was clearly not right on the weekend. That turnover from the kick out was just one of those things... all I could do was laugh.

He'll bounce back next week, so long as he's over the illness.

He came straight off and swore at himself on the sidelines

Watts was poor on the weekend in the one area we know he excels in, disposal.

He actually was ok defensively.

I'm giving everyone a free pass this week given the flu rumours. I had to work with the flu last month, and it nearly killed me. And I'm no footballer.

I shouted that that was the worst kick-in in the history of the AFL which sounds precisely like something I might say in the heat of (watching) the battle. At least on this occasion neutral supporters somewhat agreed with the sentiment after watching the replay. *I like Jack. I want him on our team.

At the time what came out of my mouth was "number 1 draft pick [censored] ME"......

I don't meausre player performances against contract or draft position. That's just juvenile.

You should start doing it, things will make a lot more sense. Edited by Henrietta Lumbago

Why can't you praise his good games then? He has played many others outside the Collingwood game. Why do you admit to HATING one of our OWN players? Hate the opposition but not a Demon. Criticise as much as you like. That's your right on this forum.

Putrid. Insipid. Disgusting.

I get the desire to use evocative words to describe the performance of footballers, but these, and a few others, are such appallingly exaggerated, misused, and overused that I now judge those that use these terms with similar words...

Is that irony?

No.

It isn't.

Disgusting and putrid I agree get thrown around too willingly.

Insipid can be useful though when you're looking for something to describe a performance that was below really poor.

Really, really poor?

Truly, unbelievably, staggeringly poor?

Insipid does the trick, with less syllables.

agreed P-man, adjectives deserve they're place in our language that's why they exist.

If one can feel love, one can also feel hate of something.

or is it about some who fear others power to feel either way & dare to express it on a forum. those who fear it have no place being in control of the forum.

fear & an overpowering wish to control, is the birthplace of bigotry.

I have no problem using these words to describe the performance of the team, because some of our performances in recent history have been as such.

To use them to describe a single player's performance... I'd try not to (especially this season, given our improvement), but cannot promise I haven't.

If we are going to get deeply into pedantiicism and semantics, it would be fewer (rather than less) syllables. :-)

HL must be perfect, am sure jacks game was at all bad, the sum of ones game can not based on one kick, he did kick one goal and set up other goals, he has been good for more a few games, it must of burned his haters for weeks, they must lick their lips when he makes one mistake, i hate nit pickers.

How about all the Jack Watts haters take the day off? Unless they have never made a mistake.

How about all the Jack Watts haters take the day off? Unless they have never made a mistake.

Edit at 11:10am - Shyt I didn't think that would work.

Only being a demon fan through my other better half for the last 5 years (Token Kiwi who knew AFL only by name) - bear with me if I'm entirely off base...

Maybe Jack reads the forums and we could help his confidence through focusing on the positives in his game under Roos rather than the negatives... even if its just for today. Behavioural change after all requires both positive and negative reinforcement.

I would argue that Watts gets more criticism than anyone else in the team these days (even the Toump, who gets more positive remarks to cancel out the negatives on the ledger), in saying that Dawes and Lumumba are catching up.

So where does the continued negativity come from?:

  • Do we think Jack still has the most 'untapped potential' in the team which we're desperately trying to get him to realise?
  • Are we all just angry that we didn't pick other more successful players from the draft and are holding Jack responsible for this?

I think the reason for this is that we as fans continue to link Jacks' development and ability to the health and success of the team overall - more so than any other player on our roster. We want to believe that if Watts can just play the way he "could" or "should", the club will be more successful. I know I've thought that we would be better for it if Jack was playing out of his skin, especially after watching the slim pickings of talent our team had at times under Neeld. But would we? in reflecting upon this time, given the roster and management I'd be leaning towards "no".

Simply put, I think Jack is simply a victim of probability - he had all the indicators and statistics to indicate he "would" be great. And that in essence set him up for failure. He is not the problem, we are. He happened to be in the wrong draft (super talented pool) and drafted to a club that didn't have a lot to be hopeful about in our future (post 2011), except maybe our youngsters courtesy of draft picks. As such, we the demoralised passionate player base saw him as our golden goose and continue to hold on to that ideal with almost childlike stubbornness. as much as we would like the draft to be a "science" built around objective measures, Jack to me is an example of the "art" that is draft picks.

Great draft statistics do not necessarily make great players, especially considering the distance in ability between state comps and AFL level - To use a cross-code example Tom Brady of the New England patriots taken unashamedly from Wiki: "Brady was selected with pick #199, a compensatory pick, in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL draft. Considering his later achievements, many analysts have called Brady the best NFL draft pick of all time."

We need to keep in mind that despite Watts not meeting our expectations, which are nothing more than personalised beliefs, he continues to love the club and wear the red and blue proudly. Yet it seems to me that there is almost as much animosity for him as there is for those that have hurt our club by leaving rather than be part of the solution i.e. Scully, Clark, Sylvia?

To me there is the Pre-Roos Watts and the Post-Roos Watts - and since we have had an improved roster and a improved coaching team I'm happy with the improvement that I have seen in Watts, too bad we couldn't have drafted him straight into the Roos era

Theoretical questions:

  • Where would Jack needed to have been drafted in 2008 to avoid the expectation (and subsequent burden of disapproval) that we have put on his shoulders?
  • What single behaviour / statistic could Jack demonstrate to you (non Jack fans) in a game that would be indicative of improvement in his game?

    REDLEG PRIDE by Meggs

Hump day mid-week footy at the Redlegs home ground is a great opportunity to build on our recent improved competitiveness playing in the red and blue.   The jumper has a few other colours this week with the rainbow Pride flag flying this round to celebrate people from all walks of life coming together, being accepted. AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe
