Brisbane Lions Consider Asking for Priority Picks

Recommended Posts

Doesn't have to be a monster deal, the AFL offer compensation at their own discretion via the secret formula. They won't give them a PP but they'll give them overs for compensation (probably pick 2), similar to the Frawley compo for us (except we legitimately needed help to get off the bottom, unlike Brisbane who merely have a long injury list). If our first rounder goes to Prestia, moving down the draft order doesn't really affect us anyway. Would royally [censored] the other teams around the mark, though.

Especially Essendon, who appear to be doing everything in their power to make their own compensation for 2 years of draft sanctions. Ruckman Giles gets the most contested marks in the VFL last week and still isn't promoted to a team in desperate need of a ruckman, utterly bewilderingly playing without one. Yep, real headscratcher that one. Almost as bad as tanking via "playing players out of position."

Don't be surprised if Brisbane, too, have a few more devastatingly poor losses so they keep their percentage lower than Gold Coast.

Mckernan has been okay for Essendon. Obviously got monstered by Goldstein but Goldstein monsters everyone. Has been far better than Bellchambers anyway

If you'd looked back further than Giles' last game then you'd find he's been in terrible form. His game on the weekend was the first time he's been named in the bests since round 6. In his game before the one on the weekend he amassed a whopping 3 effective disposals and didn't take a single mark. Was well beaten in the ruck too, registering only 26 hit outs.

Some fairly laughable comments from Leppitsch today, essentially saying, "if we win the next 6 matches, we won't get a priority pick, but if we lose the next 6 matches then we probably will."

Um, so if they lose the next 6... is that not an admission of guilt to tanking?

Interesting comparison on 360 tonight.

Dees 15 wins in last 4 seasons

Lions 29

Then robbo went on to say how footy in qld is in trouble and the afl cant afford a weak brisbane...

Ffs

Their ridiculous injury list not even mentioned. They are woefully underperforming considering the quality of their list. Beams, Christensen, last year's NAB Rising Star. There's plenty to like about the Lions, maybe Leppa should start looking at his own ability to coach before demanding more handouts.

I'm more and more convinced this is simply an attempt to get pick 1 in the draft proper AND secure all their highly rated Academy selections. The new bidding/currency rules for Academy players has put them in a difficult position in this regard

Brisbane were amongst the loudest in opposition to us getting a pick, and now they're going to ask for one because the talent on their list 'looks skinny'?

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

we should help them, & help ourselves as well. they are in some poop.

The sole reason Brisbane don't have any high draft picks on their list is because they traded them all away for experienced players. Beams is a great player, but overall their recruiting over the past 6 years makes Barry Prendergast seem like a genius in comparison.

I don't blame them for asking the question, but there is zero justification for it at this point.

'bad managers' aren't reaping the support, the thing that's been damaged, by 'bad managers', is what gets supported,,, & the bad managers have moved on.

we are the same, & thats the reason for the support; to help those who have been molested by bad managers.

Happy for Brisbane to apply for a priority pick and if they do, I would expect Melbourne to apply for one as well, irrespective of how the rest of the season pans out - on any comparison, the AFL would have to either give both clubs a PP or as is more likely, give neither of them a PP.

there ya go... the bottom 4 clubs are so far behind the top 4 clubs, it just not funny.

the difference is years of work, years I say.

equalisation has to be done, & based on the past 3 yrs aggregate.

Firstly Peter Jackson should come out and say that Bris bane don't deserve pick 2 for Leunberger . Last year Graeme Swann was on record trying to tell the AFL that we shouldn't get pick 3 For Frawley. Secondly did anyone hear what Justin Leppitsch had to say today he was on record on saying that Brisbane deserve 2 priority picks if there going improve soon and that the only way they will get it is if they lose every game from here. Just a minute didn't Chris Connolly get charged for bringing the game into disripute for a joke he said in a private meeting. If Brisbane don't win another game so should Justin Leppitsch. Brisbane should not get a priority pick we only won 2 games in 2013 and the AFL said no so why should they. Did anyone watch 360 last night they showed the win loss record for Brisbane compared to Melbourne. Brisbane 29W 53L. Melbourne 17W 65L. If they give them pririty pick I will lose it.

An article about is a pp worth it - looks at who is taken. http://www.theage.com.au/afl/brisbane-lions/brisbane-lions-priority-pick-is-it-worth-it-20150730-ginptn.html

It doesn't really draw a conclusion but if used wisely the answer is yes:

Some standout PP selection players: Alan Didak, Nick Riewoldt, Luke Hodge, Chris Judd, Adam Cooney, Jarryd Roughead, Brett Deledio, Ryan Griffen, Marc Murphy, Dale Thomas, Alex Rance.

A few Premierships, Brownlow medals and Captains in that lot!

Unfortunately for us one way or another we botched our pp's.

BTW the article shows we had 5 as they count Jack T as a pp, should be 4.

Watch all the Club Presidents/Coaches that came out against us getting a pp, now go quiet for the Lions request.

The silence will be deafening!

It really annoys me how tanking is now 'legitamised'.

Clubs announce a 'rebuild', trade away stars, lose games and fall to the bottom of the ladder ala St Kilda.

Carlton about to do the same. Brisbane talking about losing the last 6 games.

Are these not examples of 'a club not doing their best to win'?

Yeah, go ahead and tank folks, just call it a rebuild or something else, the AFL is OK with it!!

No smear or public ridicule on them!

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

So Brisbane might get one simply because they happen to be located in Queensland?

I'm glad I missed this. I would have thrown something at the telly.

No mention of their injuries this season?

That Animal Farm quote from yesterday seems more and more apt.

the way the afl have (mis)handled pp's over the last few years makes it virtually impossible to have any sensible or logical dialogue
there is simply no comprehensible framework (publicly) to judge against

of course this is no barrier to the meja to stir the pot sensationally

Ahh sh*t, I forgot about Leunberger, this means they'll get pick 2 - assuming they end up last - and we'll be pushed back.

Now I see why other teams were annoyed over us receiving an early pick for Frawley.

In terms of the key position players, this year the first 3 picks stand out, doesn't mean they'll make it - but they are standouts IMO.

If we were to end up in the bottom 3, and missed out on one of those players, that would be frustrating.

Leunberger isn't worth an early pick, he isn't even their number 1 ruck. The bloke barely gets on the park.

He'd be lucky to be worth a second rounder if the AFL are being honest in their assessment.

Its all about the money he is offered and the length of the contract.

Here is a smart way to guarantee pick 2. Lions see who he is wanting to go to and tell them to pay him more and then agree in a separate deal, to take a player on contract from that club and thereby release original club's payment to him, freeing up more to pay Leuwy.

And I bet the dirty little rotten scoundrels get too.

They put a stat up on fox and I think it showed we won 15/59 and Brisb 29/59.

If they get it the it's pure favouritism by the AFL and that wouldn't surprise anyone would it?

TANKING

To all the journalists reading this thread...

TANKING.....C'mon Caro.....get stuck in....

the tanks are rolling around Queensland as we speak, & have been most of the year. Those tanks have been seen patrolling the Surfers Paradise Strip, & around Brisbane's River districts.

Also those old blue tanks, have been heard rumbling into action again, around the Ol' Price Fixer Park over the last few of months...

It's pretty ridiculous that they're complaining about not having any first round players on their list.

What do you expect when you make a play for the best young midfielder in the comp off Collingwood, of all teams, before his contract's even finished? Of course they're going to rob you blind!

Don't turn around a year later and whinge that you have no first round picks anymore! Morons.

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
